Phase II of my beer writing career began yesterday. I'm branching out a bit and am now writing a second beer blog. This time I'm writing for the Examiner.com Denver web site. The Examiner.com is owned by the San Francisco and Washington DC Examiner newspapers. My new title at the Examiner.com is the "Northern Colorado Beer Examiner". I'm excited to have the opportunity to expand into this growing national news site.
The recent departure of the previous Denver Beer Examiner (Justinian) left an opening. Apparently a beer blogger at the Denver Post caught wind of this humble beer web site and talked to an editor at the Examiner. The Examiner then approached me to see if I had any interest in writing another column for them. They wanted someone who could capture and report on the Denver and Colorado state beer scene.
Seeing how I live and work in Northern Colorado and only visit Denver on occasion, I suggested that perhaps I could focus in on the northern part of the state as well as cover beer events in and around Denver. The Denver Examiner content editor also told me he had interest from another beer blogger from Colorado Springs who expressed the same concerns. I just happened to know that guy, Eli Shayotovich from Confessions of a Beer Geek. We both hang out on the Aleuminati - a social network for craft beer enthusiasts that's part of the ning.com domain.
Eli and I shared some emails and proposed the creation of a tag team Beer Examiner crew for the Denver Examiner site. The editor liked this idea. Seeing how Colorado is one of the biggest beer producers in the country and has nearly 100 breweries and brewpubs it would be tough for one person to cover it all. And so Eli and I have become the Southern Colorado Beer Examiner (SoCoBX) and the Northern Colorado Beer Examiner (NoCoBX) respectively. Eli will cover the Colorado beer scene from Denver and regions south while I cover the area from Denver north to Wyoming. We both will share duties for western slope and some mountain cities.
So, for the foreseeable future, I'm going to be a bit more busy. I'll be working my regular full time job as an IT Engineer by day, but by night I'll be double blogging for Fermentedly Challenged and the Examiner. I'll need to put aside my dust gathering poker blog that I've been nursing for the last 3 years and focus on the beer scene for a while. I'm excited to work on this new opportunity. I figure that I'm within 6 or 7 years of retiring from my IT job and need to start working on my semi-retired career skills. What better job than to focus on beer!
So stop on by the NoCoBX blog when you can. They don't pay me there unless I can drum up readers. I'll be updating that site at least 3 times a week. If you happen have an idea for a beer related story in Colorado drop me a comment and I'll check it out. Cheers!
