Pain at the Beer Pump

Beer prices going up these days are starting to raise eyebrows and causing some retailers to short change beer drinkers. More info over at the Northern Colorado Beer Examiner column at the Examiner.com / Denver.

Yeah, here in Portland Ore., the hops shortage is starting to really hurt my pocketbook [I'm still drinking - I'll cut something ELSE out of my budget! ;)].

Most decent beers are hovering at nine to ten bucks a six-pack.

I've been doing the math and am trying to find out if it's cheaper to:

a. Buy a kegerator and buy a large batch of beer

or

b. Brew my own beer and collaborate with other homebrewers [a collective if you will]

or

c. Drink less beer.

Wow schlockstar, are most craft beers that pricey there? I can still grab most craft 6-packs (local ones that is) for $6.99 to $7.99. My local beer store sends me 10% coupons every week in email and that really saves me a lot over the months. Some "bigger" ABV/hoppy beers run for $10.99 to $12.99 a sixer. I only buy those on occasion. I believe that I'll be setting up my homebrew station sometime later this summer and try to brew up some of my own tasty creations. Drinking less beer is not an option for me. I'll do without something else (like driving my car fewer days a week).

Well, the stuff I drink, the hoppy kind are in the 9-10 dollar range. There are still beers in the 7.50 - 8 dollar range - that were once in the 5.99 - 6.50 range. It's definitely gone up. Stone IPA and Hop Devil were both 9.99 the last time I checked. Youch.

Looking forward to hitting up Ft. Collins this summer!
