2011 GABF opening night photos

Great American Beer Festival BannerBeers - Disco Heads - Bagpipes - Slime Green Shirts! The 2011 Great American Beer Festival opened with great fanfare last night in downtown Denver at the Colorado Convention Center. An estimated crowd of over 12,000 attendees, organizers and volunteers all gathered to pour some 2500+ different beers from over 500 breweries.

For many, the evening at the GABF starts out in a nearly mile-long line (2-3 people wide). At precisely 5:30pm, the doors opened and in no time the throngs of beer enthusiasts files in through the doors, up the stairs, past the bagpipes and into the convention center.

I managed to get in line around 4:45pm last night and was in the middle of the massive line. I was able to get inside the door in around 10 minutes. I was very pleased with how fast the lines went. I had my ID checked, my wristband attached and got my tasting cup without any hassles.

Inside, I don't remember how many samplings I had, however I did take video notes on every single beer I tasted. I decided to forgo a pad and pen for a video log this year. I think it made note taking so a lot quicker and got me into a lot more interesting conversations with my fellow attendees as well.

Below are just a handful of images I scraped from the videos from the Thursday night GABF session (September 29, 2011). These images are low res, but manage to capture the essence of last nights session.

Favorite Brews from last night? Loved Avery Brewing's Immitus, Short's Brew Whiskey Sour, Cigar City Hunahpu's Imperial Stout, Nodding Head Ick Bin Ein Berliner Weiss, Strange Brewing Cherry Kreik, and Jolly Pumpkin La Roja. Sour power and the dark side for me!

Heading out for the 2011 GABF

2011 GABFGot Ticket & ID? Check. Gas in the car? Check. Floor map? Check. Notepad and pen? Check. Plans for food? Check. Cash for extras? Check. Camera and Flip cam? Check. What am I forgetting?

I'll be heading out to the GABF shortly and plan to take lots of notes, talk to a lot of people and shoot some pics and video. While I may not be able to do live updates during the festival, I will try to post daily updates the morning after each GABF.

But first, I stopped at New Belgium, Odell Brewing, Fort Collins Brewery and Funkwerks early this afternoon. New Belgium was sponsoring Blogger and Brewer VIP day. They had a reception in their conference rooms. They had over 20 beers on tap, bottled or canned. I tried Clutch (dark sour), Kick (pumpkin/cranberry sour), Belgo (Belgian IPA), and Super Cru. Lots of tasty appetizers, some real spicy too. Gotta love those bottle cap chocolates they had there as well. Sadly, New Belgium was out of 22oz bombers of Kick, else I'd have purchased one. At Odells, I bought a bottle of Bourbon Barrel Stout, at FCB I tried their For The Love Of Peach, and at Funkwerks I bought a bottle of WWCR (Crooked Stave) and their Funkwerks Saison.

For those who may not have been to a Great American Beer Festival before, or for those who are seasoned veterans, it's always nice to look back at the crazy happenings from past GABF. So before I back out of my driveway here in Greeley, I'll post for you some shots of past GABFs. Stay tuned for updates on this year's festival. Cheers!

This page is constantly updated during the day (10am to 4pm) so stop back here often for all the latest news. If you'd like to subscribe to this daily by email, sign-up here.

Odell Brewing (Fort Collins) is preparing a new collaborative-type beer release set for early next year. Odell Footprint RegionAle recently got label approval. It is celebrating the 10 states that Odell distributes to. Each of those states will be contributing one locally made ingredient to combine into this beer. Odell expects to release this barrel-aged brew sometime in February.

Denver Beer Ice Cream Fest (Denver) - Sweet Action Ice Cream (52 Broadway - Denver) is helping to celebrate Denver Beer Fest and GABF by releasing 8 different ice creams made with 8 different Colorado Craft Beers. For the last 3 years, Sweet Action has created beer ice creams and are continuing the tradition this year. Check out their flavors.

Oskar Blues (Longmont/Lyons) will release a special GABF brew that will only be available at Oskar Blues sites - look for their Local Grown Honey Badger Smoked Porter. This nasty little ale is made with Crisp Maris Otter pale malt, Gambrinus Honey Malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt and dark crystal malt along with a heaping, meaty dose of Oskar Blues home smoked malt (no kidding; there’s meat in it) and generously hopped with Columbus all the way through the boil. A huge dollop of Lyons Local Madhava Wildflower Honey at the end of the boil takes it up a notch.

Today's GABF Events - here's what's happening around Colorado today to get you prepped for GABF:

Twisted Pine Brewing (Boulder) is bringing back their "Hottest beer this side of hell" - Ghost Face Killah. It's made with six different hot chili peppers. They say its infused with Bhut Jolkia. Keep some cold milk handy to cool the burn from this brew.

GABF Factoid: If you wonder why certain lines at the GABF don't move very fast, it's probably the person in front of you tweeting or facebooking on their handhelds and not paying attention. Let's keep the updates to a minimum while standing in line people. Beware of distracted drinkers! And oh by the way, Oskar Blues will be announcing when Ten Fidy is being poured each night at GABF via FB and Twitter. Wonder if Samuel Adams will do the same for Utopias?

Front Range Brew Tours (Fort Collins) - brewery tour operator has suspended all tours until further notice. Some customers have been left holding the bags and without the bus they hired and have lost their money. Check out the full story in the Coloradoan.

Oskar Blues (Longmont) will soon be canning some of its beer into 16oz tall cans. They have ordered a new canning line from German firm KHS. This line will not only can larger 16oz cans, but also can 12oz cans at a much faster rate. Speculation is that Dales Pale Ale will be the first OB brew to go tallboy. Original story on Westword.

Swing by the tap room today to check these out as they wont last long, especially this week.

Steamworks Brewing (Durango) - heading to Durango on October 7? If you're in the area stop by Steamworks Brewing for a special Firkin Friday brew. Steamworks has created a unique Caramel Apple Firkin - made with a Steam Engine Lager base, some unfiltered Colorado apple juice and a bit more caramel flavoring. It smells just like a caramel apple. Better be quick, that firkin isn't very large and they only made one batch. Tapping starts at 3pm on October 7th.

Fort Collins Brewery Common Ground review

Fort Collins Brewery Common GroundWhen coffee and beer are both on the menu, they're usually poured into separate glasses, but in this case they have been blended together into one unique brew - Fort Collins Brewery Common Ground. Fort Collins Brewery (FCB) originally came up with this idea a couple of years ago when they collaborated with a local coffee business Jackie's Java.

Common Ground has an amber ale base blended with three different varieties of coffee. It has an ABV rating around 5.3% and a modest 15 IBU. I believe this was a seasonal release as it's not listed on their website as a year-round brew. This beer comes only on draft or in 22oz bomber bottles. I chilled this beer down very well and let it warm up just slightly before tasting.

Appearance: Common Ground poured looking exactly like an amber - golden red, with high clarity, well carbonated and with no sediment. This brew had a 1-finger plus off-white head at first pour that stuck around for several minutes. Swirling the beer left a slight lacing that clung nicely to the glass.

Aroma: When I closed my eyes and breathed it in I swore this was a rich stout with its dark roasted coffee tones. I've not been a coffee drinker, but I love the smell of roasted coffee beans and this brew had it and wonderfully so. It reminded me of walking down the coffee isle in my local supermarket. Common Ground also had a sweet aroma as well, like a caramel flavored creamer in coffee. I absolutely fell in love with this smell. One thing to note, as it warmed up significantly, I could pick up a slight hint of spicy hops.

Taste: The taste was nothing like what it smelled like. While there was some definite coffee flavor here but subdued. It wasn't heavy at all like a dark brew (which it smelled like), but medium bodied. It was rather creamy, slightly acidic from the coffee, yet with some noticeable sweet caramel malts and mild hop bitterness. The combination of roast coffee with sweetened malt made for a wonderful mixture in my sampling. It was just bitter enough to balance out the sweetness, although the last lingering taste I got was slightly sweet.

Overall: FCB Common Ground was wonderful cold and got more bitter as it warmed up. I felt as if this brew would work well with breakfast. It gave me a slight craving for bacon and pancakes for some odd reason. If there were ever a beer made for breakfast, this would be it. There's just enough alcohol in a 22oz bottle to make you notice, but if served in a smaller 8oz cup, that would make a terrific morning cup.

My advice is to drink it more on the colder side, as it changed from a rich coffee aroma to more of a hop aroma when warmed. Still, overall it married malt and coffee beans quite well. I wonder what the caffeine content is on this brew? Since I'm not a coffee drinker I couldn't tell you if this type of coffee is better than average, but from a non-coffee drinker perspective - this was something I could get used to.

I enjoyed the Common Ground brew, probably a bit more then most amber style beers. I felt that if the coffee been left out it would have been rather, well, "common". I would certainly recommend this to a friend, even non-coffee drinkers.

Odell marks the return of Bourbon Barrel Stout

Odell Bourbon Barrel StoutIt's big, it's bad and it's coming back. Odell Brewing just released a press release announcing the return of their famous Bourbon Barrel Stout. It's only brewed in limited batches and when it's out it quickly becomes a fan favorite (including yours truly). Check out the news below and prepare to grab some bottles before their gone.

Odell Brewing Rolls out the Barrel
Brewery celebrates the return of Bourbon Barrel Stout

Fort Collins, CO. – On September 24, 2011 Odell Brewing will celebrate the highly anticipated return of its Bourbon Barrel Stout. This year’s batch boasts new bourbon barrels and an updated label that pays tribute to those barrels.

"We tweaked the process this year, to meet and maintain our highest quality standard,” said Brent Cordle, brewer and barrel aging manager for Odell Brewing. “We selected Woodford Reserve barrels for the 2011 batch, and the freshly emptied barrels were immediately shipped to us cold which preserved the integrity of the barrel and the beautiful bourbon flavor."

Bourbon Barrel Stout has notes of sweet milk chocolate, smooth vanilla and roasted coffee beans. Upon barrel aging, traces of oak and caramel come forward. The bourbon barrels have a remarkable effect on the beer. In turn, the beer has a remarkable effect on the senses.

Odell Brewing will mark the return with a celebration on September 24th in the brewery’s tap room. Guests can enjoy samples of the beer, local food truck fare as well as live music by the Buzz Brothers band from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Bourbon Barrel Stout will be available in 750ml bottles throughout the brewery’s ten state distributor network.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-one years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. In 2010 the brewery completed its fourth expansion, adding a wood-aging cellar, a 750 ml bottling line, and a 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system capable of providing 25% of the brewery’s peak energy demand. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2010 North American Beer Awards – gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards – gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® – gold for IPA. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for IPA.
