A Black Fairy invades Steamworks

Breweries put out some of the best promo pics for their beers and events. Every once in a while a brewery poster catches your eye that simply must be passed alone. Here's a story about one of Steamworks Brewing Company's upcoming firkins and a great promotional poster that went with it.

Black Fairy Firkin to be tapped Feb. 3rd

DURANGO, Colo. – With a nod to “Once Upon a Snowdown,” the theme for Durango’s 2012 Snowdown winter festival, Steamworks Brewing Co. will feature a “Black Fairy Firkin,” as Firkin Fridays continues at the brewpub on Friday, Feb. 3. The firkin will be tapped at 3 p.m.

The Black Fairy Firkin has as its base Steamworks’ popular Backside Stout, which features complex malt and oat flavor, with roasted and chocolate overtones. The stout has then been re-fermented with dark maple syrup and anise seeds.

“We’re always looking for new flavor combinations,” said Steamworks brewer Spencer Roper. “We chose a polarizing flavor – the anise, which is licorice – and calmed it down with a rich maple syrup. The sweet component of the syrup should also complement the roasted quality already present in our stout.”

“The ‘Black Fairy’ should be wicked-good,” added head brewer Ken Martin, noting that February’s Firkin Friday is in the midst of Snowdown, which runs Feb. 1-5. “Come by for a warm-up prior to Friday’s Snowdown Parade.”

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine gallons. Unlike most draft beers, firkin beer is served at about 55 degrees - cool but not cold, and is unpasteurized, unfiltered. Because it contains no preservatives, a firkin beer is designed to be consumed after tapping.

Steamworks initiated its Firkin Fridays to introduce additional and unusual specialty craft beers to its regular offerings.

The award-winning Steamworks Brewing Co., open 11 a.m. to closing seven days a week, is located at 801 E. Second. Ave., Durango (970.259.9200). For further information, visit www.steamworksbrewing.com.
