Yes, I took a week off from the Colorado Beer News to celebrate the holidays. Most breweries were open for several days, but there was little major news to share so I decided to enjoy the week off from work and daily blogging. Now that the new year has begun - let the Colorado Beer News start flowing again.

New Belgium Brewing (Fort Collins) - No. They didn't reveal the location for their 2nd brewery yet as they had hoped. So look for the big announcement to come sometime later this month. New Belgium did, however, let it be known that they are putting one of their longtime regular beers on hiatus this year. Say goodbye to Mothership Wit for the time being. With the release of Dig and Shift later this year, New Belgium decided not to focus on their organic wit brew this year. As usual, this brew will probably make a return in a year or two.

Twisted Pine Brewing (Boulder) - The details have been posted on their twelve monthly Artisan Ale Project beers on the Twisted Pine web site. Twisted Pine fans can look forward to the following beers this year: Surreal Stout (Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrel Aged Sweet Stout - January), Canis Lupulus (Imperial India Black Ale - February), Sacred Spice Chai Porter (Baltic Porter with Sanctuary Chai - March), West Bound Braggot (Braggot - April), Big Easy Sour Brown (Honey Brown soured in bourbon barrels - May), Black Swan Saison (Black Saison - June), Hoppy Girl (IPA with hibiscus and jasmine - July), Wagon Wheel Stout (Bourbon Barrel Cherry Stout - August), Oktoberfest (Marzen - September), Lupuliopheliac (Fresh Hop Pale Ale - October), November (To be announced), A Barleywine (yet to be named - December). New brews will be introduced on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Big Beers Festival (Vail) - The 12th annual Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines festival is taking place this week, January 5th through the 7th at the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa. Hundreds of participants will crowd into the popular ski town to enjoy some of the biggest and most powerful brews this country has to offer. Festivities kick off with the Thursday evening Brewmaster's Dinner which has been sold out for over a month. Later in the week, workshops, seminars, tastings and more dinners will take place culminating with the commercial tasting on Saturday afternoon and a Beer & Food pairing. If you haven't already gotten tickets you may be out of luck.

Great Divide Brewing (Denver) - Due to construction going on, Great Divide won't be able to host their normal January release bash. However, they will be doing some very special tastings of their January through March seasonals with paired artisan cheeses in the Tap Room. Samples of all 3 seasonals are FREE this week only. Cheese is also free until supplies run out or from 5-8pm. Monday, January 2nd - Nomad (Pilsner) + Gouda. Tuesday, January 3rd: Old Ruffian (Barley Wine) + Blue Cheese. Wednesday, January 4th: Espresso Oak Aged Yeti (Imperial Stout) + Aged Cheddar. Thursday, January 5th: Nomad + Gouda (because they wanted a 4th day).

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - This week on Friday, January 6th at CKBC will be their 1st Annual New Year's Mystery beer release from 5pm to 9pm. You have to be there if you want to know what the mystery brew is. Plus, pub trivia starts next Monday.

Ska Brewing (Durango) - Their Modus Hoperandi and Mexican Logger (Session-able category) were voted Best Canned Craft Beers of 2011 in their respective categories by voters at the Readers' Poll. Congratulations to Ska for earning this terrific honor.

Oskar Blues (Longmont) - Grats to Ten Fidy for winning best canned Stout in the Best of 2011 Readers' Poll. Also, their Mama's Little Yella Pils took 1st in the Lager/Pilsner category. Oskar Blues also won 1st place for Innovation in canned craft beer.

Breckenridge Brewery (Denver) - Their Avalanche Ale was voted top Amber/Red Ale in the 2011 Best of 2011 Readers Poll. Crazy Mountain Amber Ale took 2nd place. Grats to both breweries.

Crabtree Brewing (Greeley) won 3rd place in the best Porter/Black/Dark Ale in a can in the 2011 Readers' Poll for their Eclipse Black IPA. Not bad for only being in a can for about a month. Things are really looking up at Crabtree after a year of winning several awards.

Steamworks Brewing (Durango) - Their Firkin Fridays continue this year. The first firkin of the year taps this Friday, January 6th with their Belgian Framboise style ale. The firkin taps at 3pm and is in limited supply. A traditional Framboise or Frambozenbier is a spontaneously fermented raspberry Lambic ale specific to the region near Brussels. Instead of brewing a Lambic, Steamworks’ Framboise Firkin will use a rich Belgian style brown ale as the base, re-fermented and naturally carbonated, or conditioned, in its cask with raspberries. The yeast transforms the sugar into alcohol within the cask, and carbonation results from the trapped carbon dioxide occurring as a byproduct. “The Belgian Framboise firkin promises to be a balance of rich chocolate and fruit, cut with tartness. Think chocolate raspberry truffles,” explained brewer Spencer Roper. “The beer will have roughly a 7.5 percent ABV, so it should be a nice warm up for these cold winter nights.”

Pateros Creek Brewing (Fort Collins) - Today starts the beginning of their new hours. They will be open today from 4pm to 8pm. Tueday through Thursday: Noon to 8pm. Friday - Saturday: Noon to 9pm. Closed Sundays. Stop in for a brew.

Del Norte Brewing (Denver) - Aaron from Del Norte stated that they are having a release party for their Iluminaria Bock on saturday, January 7th. They are also finalizing our logo for El Guapo a pilsner, that should be ready by Spring time. Del Norte will also be expanding their distribution in multiple new states this year. Stay tuned for more on this exciting news.

Mayor of Old Town (Fort Collins) - The Mayor will be tapping Old Rasputin tonight (January 2nd) at 5:00pm. Also on Thursday, January 5th, look for Dog Fish Head 120 Minute IPA to be on tap at 5pm. Be there!

Euclid Hall (Denver) - This Denver beer hotspot is kicking off 2012 with Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron as their first tapping of beer month! Com in to celebrate and relax with this highly toasted and malty brown ale, perfect for sipping while enjoying a lamb poutine, or perhaps a boudin noir. Location: 1317 14th Street.

Bonfire Brewing (Eagle) - Bonfire will be pouring beers at the Big Beers Festival in Vail this weekend including their Tebrew, Dark Dog and some surprises. Their online store just opened just prior to Christmas - currently featuring Tebrew themed good and soon will include their custom beanies. Look for Bonfire Brewing to begin small scale bottling and canning soon with their Tent Pole Porter, Awry Rye Pale Ale and Firestarter IPA. Look for them on shelves and in restaurants by summertime. Bonfire recently tripled their brewing capacity with the acquisition of a 7-barrel brewing system from the former Rosie's Brewpub in Leadville, CO. Lastly, come check out their brand new patio made from four tons of flagstone and the 350K BTU firepit.

Hops & Berries (Fort Collins) - this Fort Collins homebrew shop now has new store hours. Monday - Thursday 10am to 6pm, Friday 10am to 7pm, and Saturday + Sunday 10am to 5pm. There are still a few spots open for their Brewing 101 Class on Wednesday, January 4th (tomorrow) from 4pm to 6pm. They will cover basic extract brewing with specialty grains. Cost: $20 a head. Next class is tentatively scheduled for February 8th.

Brewery Music (NEW) - Check out the latest on-going updated page showing the best in Colorado Brewery Music. See who's playing at your favorite Colorado Brewery. Updated daily. View Music page.

Funkwerks (Fort Collins) - While brewing a batch of Tropic King a couple weeks ago, they missed the final hop addition, which happened to be the only non-Rakau hop addition in the brewing process. What was a mistake has now led to a new beer! Funkwerks will be releasing 'Exile King', a single-hopped Imperial Saison, this Thursday, January 5th in the taproom!
