Colorado Beer News 022012

Colorado Beer NewsToday is Presidents Day. For some, it's a day to remember our nation's founding fathers (George & Abe - the birthday boys), for others, it's just a day off from school and work. However you choose to celebrate it, celebrate it with a good toast - Cheers! Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Monday, February 20th, 2012.

New Belgium (Fort Collins) - New Belgium is getting back together once again with Tomme Arthur and The Lost Abbey (California) to produce a sour ale called Mo Betta Bretta. Tomme Arther was out visiting in Colorado last week and helped set the stage for this new batch of Mo Betta Bretta that should come out sometime around May 1st of this year. Odell Brewing (Fort Collins) - Next month, Odell will once again be releasing their oak aged crimson ale - Shenanigans. This is a brett soured ale that weighs in around 9.1% ABV and is expected to hit shelves in late March.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse (Loveland) - Over the weekend on Saturday, Grimm Brothers released their bottle-only batch of The Count, a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. The taproom was packed with fans and a lot of the 1200 bottles went home with Grimm fans. Check out the release speech by Don Chapman and Russell Fruits from the brewery and also read a review of The Count. Leftover bottles from the release will hit store shelves starting today.

Oskar Blues ChakaOskar Blues (Longmont) - One of the biggest stories over the weekend was the announcement that Oskar Blues is planning to do a collaboration beer with Sun King Brewery of Indiana. The joint effort will produce a batch of Chaka Belgian-style ale (8% ABV) at each facility. Chaka will be put into 16oz cans at both breweries using the same recipe and have slightly different labels. Look for this new canned beer to debut sometime in May. Bristol Brewing (Colorado Springs) - Did you miss the Firkin Rendezvous over the weekend? From the looks of it, it was a wild and crazy time. You can check out photos of the event on the Bristol Brewing Facebook page.

Silverton Brewery (Silverton) - The brewery suffered fire damage last year in April and was only able to open for a few months during the summer of 2011. Recently, more damage, previously undiscovered, was found and the brewery will be closed until May to finalize repairs and fix equipment. They hope to start serving again late Spring.

River North Brewery (Denver) - In case you missed it, River North Brewery is now open for business! Over the weekend they held their official Grand Opening celebration at the brewery at 2401 Blake Street in Denver. Stop by next time you are in LoDo. It's right at the corner of 24th and Blake in a section of the old Flying Dog building. The good folks over at Copper Kettle Brewing stopped by to help out with the celebration. Taproom hours currently are Thurs 3-9pm, Fri and Sat 3-10pm, and Sundays 3-9pm. Check out some pictures of the place in this article from

Hops & Pie (Denver/Highlands) - beer and pizza are big business in Colorado and for Hops & Pie, they recently expanded their restaurant and more than doubled their capacity to 80. They held a Dogfish Head tap takeover this last weekend to celebrate their opening of their expanded space and were met with an over capacity crowd. Things were so busy they had to turn some people away. Coming up soon they plan on having a Pliny the Younger tapping sometime in the next week or so (stay tuned) and also will be featuring Utah's Epic Brewing for their 1st Littlest Big Beer Fest of March.

Oskar Blues (Longmont) - More news from Oskar Blues - this Friday at 4pm the Tasty Weasel celebrates their 3rd year anniversary party at the tap room in Longmont. Deviant Dales IPA will also be available in 16oz cans in house this Friday as well!

Arvada Beer Company (Arvada) - Fat Tuesday party, tomorrow at 4pm. Beads, King cake, and great beer. Wednesday UPC Holden poker. Thursday at 4 Brewers Limited release based on WTW. Friday Triple B, a Raspberry and Blackberry Golden Ale. Growler's available on this one.

American Craft Beer Radio (FM 102.3 ESPN Denver) - Tune in this Saturday from noon to 1pm. Host Gary V's guests include 4 Colorado beer bloggers and writers including David Young (Coloradoan), Jonathan Shikes (Westword), Sean Buchan (Denver Off The Wagon) and yours truly, Dave Butler (Fermentedly Challenged). We'll be talking Colorado beer and sharing stories about writing about beer. If you don't get 102.3FM in your area, listen in LIVE from the 102.3FM ESPN Radio web site.

Elevation Beer Company (Poncha Springs) - This Tuesday, February 21st will mark their first official brew day at the new brewery in Poncha Springs. Soon we can all look forward to sampling one of these upcoming brews: First Cast, Mount Blanca (Belgian Saison), Apis IV (Quadrupel) and Signal De Botrange. Coming late Spring.

Freshcraft (Denver) - There have been several Pliny the Younger tappings already this month and Freshcraft is going to give you another chance at getting a glass of this hard to get brew. On Wednesday, February 22nd at 5:30pm they'll be pouring $10 10oz servings. They have a 1/6 bbl keg that is expected to drain very quickly (it only lasted 12 minutes last year). Just 50 tickets available given out on a first come, first serve basis beginning at 5:30pm that night (no advance purchases).
