February 28, 2012 - DURANGO, Colo. – To coincide more closely with St. Patrick’s Day, Steamworks Brewing Co. will hold its monthly Firkin Friday on Friday, Mar. 16, 2012, and reprise the popular “Irish Car Bomb” firkin. The cask will be tapped at 3 p.m.

“We decided not to mess with a good thing,” said Ken Martin, Steamworks head brewer, noting that typically the brew dogs explore a new specialty beer each Firkin Friday. “The Irish Car Bomb was one of the quickest to sell out in our firkin history. People really liked it.”

The Irish Car Bomb, named for the beer’s effect and not intended as a political statement, has as its base Steamworks’ Backside Stout, which features complex malt and oat flavor. Its second fermentation is with Irish Cream and Jameson whiskey flavors.

“As we found out last year, it’s a very smooth brew, but it could hit you hard, and you probably won’t feel it coming,” said Spencer Roper, assistant brewer.

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine gallons. Unlike most draft beers, firkin beer is served at about 55 degrees - cool but not cold, and is unpasteurized, unfiltered. Because it contains no preservatives, a firkin beer is designed to be consumed after tapping.

Reminded Martin, “Unlike most draft beers, firkin beer is unpasteurized, unfiltered and naturally carbonated, or conditioned, it its cask. The yeast transforms the sugar into alcohol within the cask, and carbonation results from the trapped carbon dioxide occurring as a byproduct.”

Steamworks initiated its Firkin Fridays to introduce additional and unusual specialty craft beers to its regular offerings. Traditionally held the first Friday of the month, Firkin Friday will resume its regular schedule on Friday, April 6.
The award-winning Steamworks Brewing Co., open 11 a.m. to closing seven days a week, is located at 801 E. Second. Ave., Durango (970.259.9200). For further information, visit
