Avery Nineteen Belgian Style Tripel review

Avery Nineteen Belgian Style TripelAvery Brewing puts out a special anniversary beer each year. Each time they do, it's completely different than the last anniversary ale. Avery Brewing Company has been making beer since 1993 and this review covers their Avery Nineteen Belgian Style Tripel Ale.

Avery Nineteen came in a special 22oz foil covered bottle. The label shows what seem to be three monks enjoying a beer with food. This particular beer weighs in at a hefty 8.23% ABV and was bottled in April 2012. Avery describes the ingredients as: Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, flaked oats, Belgian candy sugar, hops and an infamous Belgian yeast. The label goes on to look forward to their 20th year in 2013 and to their new facility being planned.

I've had a handful of their anniversary ales during the last 5 years and I must admit that sometimes the style they chose for a particular year was either a big hit or a narrow miss. How would this year's edition be?

Appearance: After popping the cap, Avery Nineteen poured a cloudy light golden yellow color with a bright white head. The head rose quite easily in the glass. The bubbles were rather large and foamy looking. The head quickly dropped to just a thin quite covering. The beer seemed decently carbonated. Swirling the beer left a tiny white lacing that left a bit of itself along the glass.

Aroma: My first whiff of Avery Nineteen reminded me initially of a German Berliner Weisse for some reason. Perhaps the wheat in this beer mixed with the special Belgian yeast strain gave off the same effect as another style when it was cold. Regardless, it was unexpected yet inviting. As it warmed, I could pick up more of a fruity aroma with a slight banana and clove characteristic found in many Belgian-style ales. The hops in the nose seemed a bit subdued, but there was enough of a citrus, herb and lemon-grass like nose to tell it was there. The beer definitely smelled its best after about 10 minutes after being opened.

Taste: This Nineteen Anniversary Ale was medium bodied and left a slight tongue coating with a light dry bitter finish. The taste was of dry pale malts with a hint of sweetness, lemon zest, and wheat. The yeast also left a noticeable flavor as well. Some breadiness and floral characteristics were also noticeable. It took me a few sips to get a grasp on what Avery was trying to do with this beer. After the beer opened up a bit it became a nice drinking Abbey Tripel.

Overall: The more I drank this, the smoother it got. There was just a little bit of alcohol heat perceptible in this beer, yet it didn't distract from the enjoyment of the beer. Avery seemed to nail the Tripel style very well. I was pleased by this year's offering. It seemed more straight forward and less spicy than other anniversary ales I've tried. I'll certainly look towards next year's beer to see what they end up doing for their 20th.
