Loveland Aleworks hosts BBQ Beer pairing

Loveland AleworksThey may not be open yet, but that didn't stop founder & brewmaster Nick Callaway from lending out his Loveland Aleworks tasting room to help Engaging Loveland host a kick-off BBQ-Beer Pairing competition last night at the brewery.

Several dozen people were on hand to watch as two local competing BBQ businesses, Bottlecap BBQ and Bedrock BBQ go head to head with sample recipes each paired with local beers made from Loveland Ale Works, Grimm Brothers Brewhouse and Blue Moon Brewing Company to see which pairing was to be named the best in town. There were a variety of meats and sauces. Sauces were both hot, spicy, sweet and surprising.

Dave Butler, yours truly, was invited to be one of the 5 judges for this events. Among the other judges included bloggers Lauren Hoff (Napa of Beer) and Heidi Kerr-Schlaefer ( as well as representatives from local Loveland area businesses. The event was a kick-off to the upcoming Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & Brews event coming to downtown Loveland in July.

Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & BrewsKristine Koschke of Engaging Loveland and Nicole Yost of Fyn Public Relations helped organized the event which lasted over 2.5 hours. There were chicken dishes, pork dishes, and beef dishes - each made with one of the local beers. Added to each dish was a special BBQ sauce which was also infused with a local beer. Judges were asked to evaluate each pairing based off of overall taste, use of beer in the BBQ sauce, Success of the pairing, and also Presentation.

In the end, the winning dish was selected by judges (a pork dish) and that will be used as a primary offering at a competition at the upcoming Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & Brews on July 13th and 14th in downtown Loveland on Railroad Avenue between 4th & 5th streets. My personal favorite was a pulled port dish that had a delicious spicy Carolina vinegar sauce and was paired with The Griffin (hefeweizen) from Grimm Brothers.

Check out the photos from the event below. You'll drool over some of these pairings. If you can't view the slides via the RSS feed, please view them on the blog.
