Colorado Beer NewsToday is NFL Kickoff Day! Today marks the beginning of the NFL football season. Nothing like watching a good football game and drinking a craft beer with friends. How are you going to celebrate the return of pro football this week? Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, September 5th, 2012.

Trinity Brewing (Colorado Springs) - There will be 4 special beers being released this month. First is their Pineapple Head Saison - a sour pineapple brew - coming September 7th. The Pumpkin, their 1st harvest beer will tap the following week on September 14th. Then on September 21st they will mark the return of their Farmhouse Walloon Garden harvest Saison. Finally, on September 28th, stop in for their Houdini Hopper - a wet hop ale done with 100% Simcoe hops. Get these early, some are already half sold out.

Avery Brewing (Boulder) - On Saturday, Sept 8th, join in the hop worship for the Inaugural Boulder IPA Fest! Join Avery Brewing to celebrate India Pale Ale in all of its iterations and strengths! Tickets are $35 and include 16 4-oz pours, live music, and a commemorative pint glass. Tickets on sale now in the Avery Tap Room and online at Also, get ready for a new batch of Rumpkin (pumpkin ale) being released in bottles on September 29th.

Lowry Beer Garden (Denver) - Each year, brewers wait in thirsty anticipation for hop harvest and the chance to brew fresh hop beer. When the hops are at their peak in late August, brewers head out to the fields to hand-pick their hops. The hops then go from the field to the kettle within a matter of hours and brewing begins. The result - a very limited, aromatic hoppy beer that is available for a short peroiod, once a year. September 19th - October 14th, several Denver-area restaurants (Lowry Beer Garden, Billy's Inn, Ernie's Bar & Pizza and LoHi SteakBar) are coming together to celebrate the fall hops harvest with a month-long Hops Nouveau event. Each restaurant will host 1-4 small batch beers brewed with hops from the August harvest. Stop in to try some fresh hop beer!

Ska Brewing (Durango) - Today officially marks Ska's 17th anniversary! Seems like 1995 wasn't that long ago. This weekend they're hosting a special SOLD OUT anniversary party for 1000 people. Hope you got your ticket! Also, during the weekend, Ska Brewing took home another 5 medals from the Colorado State Fair to display in their tap room. Also, stay tuned for this Friday when they release this year's batch of Euphoria Pale Ale in cans.

Parry's Pizza & Bar (Highlands Ranch) - This Friday, September 7th is Woodchuck Hard Cider Pint Night. Parry's is hosting several of their hard ciders on tap that night. Show up, buy a cider, get a pint glass free while supplies last. Come see why this is one of the biggest and most successful cider makers in the USA.

Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project (Denver) - Today marks the opening day of Crooked Stave's new taproom which opens at 2:00pm. They will have several beers on tap at the opening including: WWBB, WWBI, Vignole, Petite Sour, L'Brett d'Or, Blackberry Petite Sour, Surette and more. The tasting room is located at 1441 W. 46th Avenue, Unit 19 in Denver, CO.

Backcountry Brewery (Frisco) - Summit County's small brewery recently received medals at the 2012 Colorado State Fair for six of their beers including 5 Silvers and 1 Bronze. The award winners were: Telemark IPA (silver), Switchback Amber (silver), Ptarmigan Pilsner (bronze), Peak 1 Porter (silver), Imperial Saison (silver) and Ore Buckets India Black Ale (silver). Backcountry was one of 70 breweries participating in the state competition this year including some breweries from New Mexico. The medals were just received this week and are on display at the brewery.

Pikes Peak Brewing (Monument) - On September 10th, Pikes Peak Brewing will release their 2012 edition of the Local 5 Pale Ale. This beer is brewed for and by the Local 5 of the Colorado Springs Professional Firefighters Association. Proceeds from the sale of this beer will go directly to the Local 5 and help cover travel costs associated with their service to their brave First Responders. This single hop light ale will debut at PPBC on Monday Sept. 10th. at 6pm. There will be only 1 keg available at the tap room, all the rest will be featured at select Colorado Springs venues during the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony.

Bristol Brewing Company (Colorado Springs) - Starting Thursday, September 6th at 5pm their Octoberfest beer will be appearing for the first time in six packs with a new name and logo. Next, from the teamwork-builds-community department, when they brewed Cheyenne Canon Ale, you bought it, and they donated the proceeds to the Friends of Cheyenne Canon. This weekend, FoCC will dedicate a new visitor center at Helen Hunt Falls. Coincidence? I think not. And finally, registration is now underway for Zymurgy Institute 7.0, which, is a series of ten presentations held in their tasting room on the art and science of beer, brought to you by Bristol Brewing and the CSU-Pueblo Cooperative Extension program. Who said back-to-school was just for the kids?

Strange Brewing Company (Denver) - On Tap today for their One-Barrel Wednesday - Pumpkin Porter. They used pumpkins in the mash, pumpkins in the boil and just enough spice. They claim it's like liquid Pumpkin Pie in a glass. There's only one keg of this so get some before it's gone.

Boulder Beer Company (Boulder) - Tickets are now on sale for the Beer Rave 2012. Tix sell for $30 a piece for the September 29th event which runs from 2pm to 6pm at the brewery. This event features only the most underground, tap-room only, specialty and hand-crafted brews from 30+ Colorado breweries. Your ticket gets you all the samples you want plus a commemorative tasting cup. Come help Boulder Beer Company celebrate their 33rd Anniversary! That's practically a third of a century.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse (Loveland) - In recognition of September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, McKee Spirit of Women has partnered with Co’s BMW Center and Grimm Brothers Brewhouse for an educational event on prostate health. Pints, Pistons, and Prostates is Sept. 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Co’s BMW Center, 4150 Byrd Drive in Loveland. Guests must RSVP in advance by calling (970) 203-6631 before Sept. 10. No registrations will be taken at the door, and seating is limited. There is no charge. Refreshments will be served. Guests will hear from urologist Curtis Crylen, MD, and radiation oncologist Elizabeth Ceilley, MD, who will discuss screenings and treatments for prostate cancer. The daVinci surgical robot will be shown. Grimm Brothers Brewhouse will offer free microbrew samples for guests 21 and older. Co’s showroom of vehicles also will be on display. New Belgium Brewing (Fort Collins) - Tour de Fat, New Belgium Brewing’s traveling celebration of all things bicycle, is still looking for a car-for-bike swapper for its Denver stop on Saturday, September 8 at City Park. A highlight of Tour de Fat is the annual car-for-bike swap, where one person will hand over his or her car keys and commit to one year of living car-free. This year, the swapper will choose a local bike shop to help turn a $2,250 budget into an ultimate car-replacement commuter bike. Vehicles for Charity will auction the car, with proceeds benefitting local cycling organizations. Oktoberfest in Colorado (Annual List) - The harvests are coming in, the weather is starting to cool, and towns and communities in Colorado are planning their Oktoberfests! The first celebrations have already begun and the 2012 Colorado Oktoberfest page has compiled a list of over 30 communities in the Centennial state that have Oktoberfest or harvest festivals planned. Check it out and visit one of more of these activites. Festivals run from late August through early October.
