A personal look back at 2012 and Colorado craft beer

Greg Koch and me2012 - I hardly knew you. The months blew by so fast it was like a blur. Must have been because there was so much great Colorado craft beer pouring that my memories are a bit foggy. Here's a look back at some of my personal highlights from this past year. Can 2013 be even better! You bet it can!

January
- Twisted Pine did a new artisan ale a month - artwork and craft beer collide.
- I joined the Treehouse Brewing Club in Greeley, CO meets monthly at Crabtree Brewing to re-kickstart my homebrewing.
- Avalanche Brewing Company begins brewing in Silverton, CO.
- Memorable tastes - Deviant Dale's IPA and Twisted Pine Ghost Face Killah.

On the radioFebruary
- Colorado Craft Beer Radio show split into two separate shows - Gary Valliere starts up American Craft Beer Radio on 102.3 FM while John Turk and Chris Katechis (Gubna) did the Colorado Craft Beer Show on AM 760. Both at same time slot. I guest hosted with Gary for 1 show.
- A visit to Pateros Creek Brewing in Ft. Collins.
- I visited to Dry Dock Brewing Company in Aurora with Gary V as a tour guide.
- River North Brewery opens in Denver.
- Most memorable tastes - Grand Teton Wake Up Call Imperial Coffee Porter, Twisted Pine Big Shot Espresso Stout, Grimm Brothers Brett Bock.

March
- Crooked Stave begins 1st release for Cellar Reserve members.
- Great Storm Brewing opens it's doors March 23rd in Colorado Springs.
- Shine Brewing Company starts brewing beer at restaurant in Boulder.
- Most memorable tastes - Dry Dock Double IPA, Sun King Batch 555 Isis Double IPA, Crooked Stave Blackberry Petite Sour.

Echo Brewing Company Grand OpeningApril
- BRU Boulder opens a half-barrel system in Boulder.
- Fermentedly Challenged reaches 1000 post milestone.
- Echo Brewing opens in Frederick, CO on April 14th.
- Vine Street Pub & Brewery at last becomes a brewery.
- Oskar Blues Grill & Brew celebrated 15th anniversary.
- Wynkoop Brewery makes an April Fool Joke with Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout.
- Suds Brothers Brewery #2 opens in Fruita.
- New Belgium selects Asheville, NC as site for 2nd brewery.
- Memorable tastes - Santa Fe Imperial Java Stout, Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout.

City Star BrewingMay
- Oskar Blues collaborates with Sun King Brewery on Chaka and 16oz resealable cans.
- Oskar Blues announces intention to open 2nd brewery in North Carolina.
- Elevation Beer Co opens May 19th in Poncha Springs.
- Colorado breweries take 27 medals at 2012 World Beer Cup.
- City Star Brewing opens in Berthoud, CO on May 5th.
- Big Choice Brewing opens in Broomfield, CO on May 4th.
- Judge Baldwin's stopped brewing in Colorado Springs.
- Ouray Brewing Company opened a new taproom in late Spring.
- Memorable tastes - Avery The Maharaja Imperial IPA, Founders Breakfast Stout, Alaskan Black IPA.

TV show filmingJune
- Bootstrap Brewing Opens in Niwot on June 20th.
- Greeley announces open liquor container policy in downtown section.
- Renegade Brewing celebrates 1 Year Anniversary.
- Attended Burning Can Festival in Lyons.
- Appeared on the Colorado Craft Beer Show.
- I judged at Loveland Aleworks pre-opening BBQ+Beer pairing competition on June 27th.
- I participated in filming the pilot episode for the upcoming TV series "Colorado Brews" at Crabtree Brewing with Ed Sealover. The show will debut in March 2013 on Rocky Mountain PBS. I did a segment called Beer Tech involving glassware in the show.
- Hogshead Brewery opens in Denver.
- TRVE Brewing Company opens in Denver June 27th.
- Memorable tastes: Marble Brewery IPA, Firestone Walker DBA, Elevation Apis IV Quad, Avery Nineteen, Crabtree Brewing Ménage à Trois.

Beer Bloggers ConferenceJuly
- Loveland Aleworks opened week of July 4th.
- Upslope Brewing announces plans to expand into 2nd location.
- Crazy Mountain beers start distributing state-wide in cans.
- Interviewed on the American Craft Beer Radio show from Indy July 14th.
- Attended 2012 Beer Bloggers Conference in Indianapolis, IN July 13-15.
- Survived the Night of Many Bottles at #BBC12.
- Attended Indiana Brewers Festival in Indy. Lots of great midwestern beers.
- Ticketmaster disaster for members only GABF sale and tickets sell out in less than 45 minutes.
- Memorable tastes: Loveland Aleworks IPA, Bavik Brewery Petrus Aged Ale.

Colorado Craft Beer ShowAugust
- Visited Arvada Beer Company and Yak & Yeti in Aurora, CO.
- Appeared again on the Colorado Craft Beer Show August 25th.
- Began studying for BJCP Certification tests. Monthly study group.
- BJ's Brewery moved locations in Boulder.
- Crabtree Brewing moves to new tasting room in Greeley. Plans to move rest of brewery by year end.
- Paradox Brewing Company opened in Woodland Park.
- Prost Brewing opens in Denver on August 23rd.
- Pateros Creek successfully raised over $22K via CommunityFunded.com for their taproom expansion.
- Memorable tastes: Grand Teton Snarling Badger Berliner Weisse, Yak & Yeti Ginger Witbier, Arvada Beer Goldline IPA Nitro.

Brewery touring in DurangoSeptember
- West Flanders Brewing opens September 24th.
- Visited all 4 Durango breweries + 2 in Silverton.
- Colorado Mountain Brewery at the Roundhouse opened September 7th in Colorado Springs.
- Crooked Stave opens a tasting room in Denver September 5th.
- Gravity Brewing opens on September 8th in Louisville.
- Two Rascals Brewing opened in Montrose on September 20th.
- Tivoli Beer is resurrected and is brewed by Prost Brewing.
- Memorable tastes: Full Sail Brewer's Share ESB, Carver Brewing Belgian Tripel, Durango Brewing Sour Golden Ale.

2012 GABFOctober
- Fermentedly Challenged celebrates 5th Anniversary.
- Visited Wynkoop Brewery, River North, Falling Rock Tap House, Denver Beer Co, Prost Brewing, Trinity Brewing, Pikes Peak Brewing, High Hops Brewery.
- Worked as member of the media at 2012 Great American Beer Festival for 3 days. Tasted over 60 great beers.
- High Hops grand opening October 19th.
- Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew opens in Denver on October 12th.
- Silverton Brewery closed it's building in Silverton in October, contracting out its beers.
- The Very Nice Brewing Company opens in Nederland.
- Black Shirt Brewing official grand opening in Denver on October 13th.
- Memorable tastes: Trinity TPS Report.

2012 Denver WebAwardsNovember
- Awarded "Best Booze Blogger 2012" by Westword Magazine at Denver #WebAwards.
- Interviewed on American Craft Beer Radio.
- Strange Brewing faces legal battle over name.
- Oskar Blues plans to open CHUBurger restaurant.
- Brewery Rickoli opens in Wheat Ridge on November 28th.
- Del Norte Brewing ceases business.
- Pitchers Brewery in Fort Collins starts brewing their own beer.
- Memorable tastes: Odell Oh My Gourd, Ska Autumnal Mole Stout, Upslope Pumpkin Ale.

40 taps and a full bar selection at Black BottleDecember
- Colorado to vote on full strength beer in grocery/convenience stores in early 2013.
- Black Bottle Brewery opens December 1st in Fort Collins. Visited the brewery.
- Denver Beer Company opens expansion of a barrel room.
- Hall Brewing Company opens production facility in Parker.
- World doesn't end on 12-21-12 - End of World parties are all the rage.
- Oskar Blues 2nd brewery opens in Brevard, NC on Dec. 12th.
- The Outpost room expansion nears completion at Pateros Creek with the arrival of new tables.
- Memorable tastes: Loveland Aleworks Imperial Stout, Black Bottle Rumsky Brett Wine & Hipster.

Whew - that was a busy year! I'm sure 2013 will be even busier. Can't wait!
