Colorado Beer News 010913

Colorado Beer NewsToday is National Static Electricity Day. It's a day where you're tempted to shuffle your feet across a thick carpet and touch your nearest friend somewhere on their bare skin and give them a nice little zap! Then you'd better buy them a beer or face retribution. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, January 9th, 2013.

Metro Denver

Yak & Yeti Brewpub (Arvada) - Recently, Yak & Yeti took submissions for homebrewing recipes from members of the KROC homebrew club and the top 3 recipes were selected to be turned in to creations at Yak & Yeti. The homebrewers will have a chance to brew their beer at Yak & Yeti and have them be served at the brewpub. Winning recipes for this round included: Very Berry Stout (stout made with Celestial Seasonings Wild Berry Tea), Carrot Cake Ale (ale with carrots, vanilla & spices), and a Pink Peppercorn IPA. Look for word on these upcoming tappings in the weeks ahead.

Arvada Beer Co (Arvada) - Today is Happy Hour all day long. They're also releasing their Poolhall Porter today - a cross between a brown and a robust style with all the taste of a robust porter. Stop by to try one soon.

Boulder County

Wild Woods Brewery (Boulder) - Ever heard of a beer that was made with putting hot rocks in the brew? Wild Woods has just such a beer. They put fiery hot river rocks and added them to the boil in their River Rock Brown Ale. It's a smooth, nutty brown ale and it won't remind you of rocks either. They've brought it back and it's now on tap.

J Wells Brewery (Boulder) - Hey, don't forget that Boulder is getting a new brewery that opens this Thursday, January 10th! J Wells Brewery is located at 2516 49th Street. This is the 1st of 4 breweries set to open in Boulder this year. J Wells will be serving up their Hop Haze IPA, Jamie's Pale Ale and a Chocolate Milk Stout. Get there early as seating in this small brewery is very limited - it'll prove to be standing room only on opening day. They open at 1pm and run until 10pm (or until the beer is all gone).

Northern Colorado

Black Bottle Brewery (Ft. Collins) - Film and Beer join together for a movie night on January 11th as Black Bottle is hosting a screening of "The Aviation Cocktail" and also releasing a new beer of the same name. The beer is an Imperial Dark Rye IPA. The movie starts at 9:15pm. Meet the film maker and the brewer. The cost is $7 for both the movie and the beer. Tickets are available at the brewery.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse (Loveland) - Today Grimm opens up at 12 noon and will be offering up $1 off pints until 3pm. They are even bringing in Chaulkboard Gourmet Express at noon to serve up their special Humpburgers (for Hump Day) for $5. A burger and a beer will surely get you over the work week hump.

High Hops Brewery (Windsor) - You don't have to be a guy to appreciate a good Nut Warmer. Today's Hump Day firkin is "The Nut Warmer", a 11.5% ABV Barley wind brewed with Hazel"nut". This is a very limited batch, just 5 gallons and it will be tapped at 5pm today. You can use that to wash down a tasty delight from Chaulkboard Gourmet Express. Get some while it lasts!

City Star Brewing (Berthoud) - Drink a beer and help support a local Berthoud resident in need! This Saturday 1/12 City Star will be hosting a fundraiser at the brewery for Berthoud resident Angelo Dabbiero, helping offset his medical treatment expenses. They are donating $1 for EVERY beer sold ALL day. Additionally, the Denver Brew Fest has donated a pair of tickets to the January 25th Winter Brew Festival at Denver's Mile High Station to raffle off in support of the fundraiser. Additional donations welcome.

Southern Front Range

BierWerks Brewery (Woodland Park) - Tickets for the 3rd Annual winter Beer Fest on Saturday, February 16, 2013 are now on sale. The festival will be held at BierWerks from 2pm to 6pm that day. Sample beers from nine local microbreweries while enjoying snacks and live music. Participating breweries include Arvada Beer, Trinity, Bristol Brewing Company, Prost Brewing, Eddyline, Colorado Mountain Brewery, Pikes Peak Brewing, Tivoli Beer, and BierWerks. Get tickets on Eventbrite.

Mountains and West

Grand Lake Brewing (Grand Lake) - Heading through the Grand Lake area this week? FYI - the taphouse has some new hours this week. Wednesday and Thursday 3pm to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 9pm and Sunday 11am to 8pm. If you've got a thirst or an appetite they've got the solution!

Elevation Beer Company (Poncha Springs) - The Big Beers Festival in Vail this weekend is going to have a lot of great beers including 3 from Elevation Beer Company. Festival attendees will get a chance to sample not only their fan favorite Apis IV Quadrupel, but also their new Oil Man Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout (11% ABV) and their upcoming Señorita, Horchata Imperial Porter (8.5%). Hope to post some tasting notes on these next week.

Bars, Restaurants and Misc.

Colorado Beer Laws - The Denver Post is reporting that a new bill being introduced to the Colorado legislature proposes to allow 18 to 20 year olds the ability to drink alcohol in Colorado bars and restaurants provided that one of their parents buys the drink. This bill in effect would encourage family get togethers in more places that serve alcohol and allows young adults to have a drink with their parents when out on the town. Other states have similar laws (like Wisconsin). What do you think of this proposed law? A good idea or would it simply promote young adults to want to drink more? Original story.

Parry's Pizzeria & Bar (Highlands Ranch) - There's always some kind of beer event in the works at Parry's. Coming up on Friday, January 18th it's a Firestone Walker Pint Night from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. On Saturday, January 26th it's a Dry Dock Brewing Tap Takeover all day from 11am to close. Then on Friday, February 1st celebrate Ground Hogs Day with Woodchuck Hard Ciders from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The Mayor of Old Town (Ft. Collins) - The Mayor will be resuming their Friday Afternoon Club (F.A.C.) this Friday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm with FREE pizza and live music. 100 beers on tap go great with that pizza.
