Colorado Beer News 011013

Colorado Beer NewsToday is Peculiar People Day. The term is also another way of saying "Chosen People", but we all know better. One thing's for sure, as you drink a good craft beer, those peculiar people don't seem quite as peculiar anymore. Or is it the other way around? Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Thursday, January 10th, 2013.

Metro Denver

Diebolt Brewing Company (Denver) - Jonathan Shikes wrote an article on Westword yesterday announcing that Diebolt Brewing Company has plans to open up a 15bbl 8,000 square foot brewery in a warehouse in Denver at 3855 Mariposa Street as early as late Spring or early Summer 2013 timeframe. They plan to brew beers that haven't been fully explored by many breweries like Saisons and Bières de Garde. The brewery will be run by father/son team Dan and Jack Diebolt.

Halcyon Brewing Company (Denver) - This brewery has been in the works for some time now, but first they will need to clear up one hurdle. Apparently, their name has already been trademarked by another brewery's beer (Tallgrass Brewing's Halcyon Unfiltered Wheat) and so they are looking to choose another name for their brewery. Plans are still moving ahead to open a brewery. They are still looking for a final location (Denver tentatively). Look for word soon on their new name and tentative opening target date soon.

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - Need a place to hang out during the football playoff game on Saturday? Check out Copper Kettle. Get $1 off all beers during the game. They'll also be tapping a new beer at 12pm as well - Reynard Home Brew Belgian Pale Ale. Primo Wood Fired Pizza will be on hand from 1pm through the end of the game as well.

Yak & Yeti Brewpub (Arvada) - Did you know that Yak & Yeti now has a barrel room? Well, they have part of their brewhouse with 3 new barrels in it that they are starting to age 3 different beers in. One is a Leopold Brothers Peach Whiskey barrel filled with a Belgian Blond Ale, another is a Tonnellerie O French Oak Bordeaux barrel with more Belgian Blonde Ale, and the third barrel is a Leopold Brothers Whiskey barrel with a Porter inside. Expect these barrels to age the beer for a couple of months at least and then see some of this kegged and poured in the Spring.

Boulder County

Mountain Sun (Boulder) - Stout Month is coming! Prepare to descend into darkness (of beers that is). Mountain Sun came out with their initial list of stouts they have been preparing for the last 6 months for the upcoming 20th Stout Month. Read all about which stouts are returning and what new tastes await in February. Stout month will be celebrated at all three locations: Mountain Sun, Southern Sun in Boulder and Vine Street Pub & Brewery in Denver.

J Wells Brewery (Boulder) - Today is the day that J Wells Brewery opens their doors for business. Today they'll be open from 1pm to 10pm. They have street side parking, about 20 spaces that clears up around 4 o'clock. There's also 4 spaces in front of the brewery that are reserved for them. After 5pm, anyone can park in the other spaces. They'll have 3 brews on tap. Seating space is limited. Expect standing room only during the first day or so.

Northern Colorado

Verboten BrewingVerboten Brewing (Loveland) - Loveland is getting a new brewery this weekend! According to their Facebook page, Verboten is planning a soft opening this weekend this Friday, January 11th from 3pm to 9pm and on Saturday from 1pm to 9pm. The brewery is located at 1550 Taurus Court in Loveland, CO - just across the street from Dancing Pines Distillery. They'll have the Ablaze Food truck outside serving up grub. Opening Lineup: Belgian Wit with Lemongrass, IPA, and a Caramel Porter 2 ways-on CO2 and Nitro. They'll expand their days and hours to Thursday through Saturday later in January then also add Sundays and Mondays in February. Check them out!

Southern Front Range

Bristol Brewing Company (Colorado Springs) - Look for Bristol Brewing up at the Big Beers Festival this weekend. They'll be pouring their Belgian Dubbel, their Tripple and their Barleywine at the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa. These big beers will help you feel warm during the upcoming storm.

Trinity Brewing Co (Colorado Springs) - Their annual Wild Beer & Game Dinner hosted by Peter Bouckaert scheduled for September sold out in minutes! If you didn't get a spot you can get on their waiting list if there are any cancellations between now and then.

Mountains and West

Big Beers Festival (Vail) - The 13th Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival begins tonight up in Vail as the Vail Cascade Resort. This festival runs through Saturday culminating on the 12th with the big commercial tasting session at 2:30pm. For those with tickets, expect winter storm Gandolf to welcome you into Vail with up to 8 inches of fresh snow this weekend. Prepare for anything as the altitude, the high ABV beers and snow will test even the most experience beer drinkers. Fermentedly Challenged will be up there this weekend. Look for updates on social media throughout the weekend and a report or two with pictures early next week.

Bars, Restaurants and Misc.

American Craft Beer Radio (102.3 FM Denver) - This Saturday is not only the date for the big football playoff game, but it's also time for another episode of American Craft Beer Radio. This Saturday starting at 2:00pm, Gary V and friends will be up in Vail broadcasting live from the Big Beers Festival. He's sure to have a lot of special guests from several attending breweries. Tune in to 102.3 ESPN Radio just before the game (and during too).
