Colorado Beer NewsToday is Oreo Cookie Day. It's the famous chocolate cookie with the white frosting in between. No matter how you choose to eat one - celebrate them today! By the way, they pair very well with a stout. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, March 6th, 2013.

Metro Denver

Breckenridge Brewery (Denver) - Want a chance to name a beer? Breckenridge Brewery and Denver Comic Con are planning once again to produce a beer in honor of the upcoming Comic Con convention in Denver in May. This year, the beer will be a Witbier made with Buddha's Hand (an exotic fruit). If you submit the winning name, you could win a year's worth of free beer (365 bottles), 4 collector edition pint glasses with the beer name, 1 breckenridge beer tap handle and a Denver Comic Con swag bag filled with goodies! Big Choice Brewing (Broomfield) - On Saturday, March 9th, Big Choice will officially unveil their new logo design and also celebrate with their new Disconnected Red in the new 16oz cans. These 16oz 4-packs will be in limited supply - first come first served. Limit one 4 pack per customer. The beers will be canned on March 7th with the help of Mobile Canning of Longmont. Also, don't forget to stop in on St. Patrick's Day, Sunday March 17th from 11am to 6pm for a big celebration. No green beer but plenty of Irish food, Irish Trivia, a Naughty Leprechaun Food Eating Contest from noon to 2pm - winner gets free beer for a year ($25 entry fee).

Lone Tree Brewing Co (Lone Tree) - In the tap room LTBC will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day on March 16th with plenty of their Acres O' Green Irish Red and their first Limerick contest. Stop by the tap room for details. For those brave enough to take on the St. Patrick's 5K race, they will be serving up free beer to all participants on March 16th. www.highlandsranchraceseries.com

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - Today's Wednesday firkin is the Hoppy Ass Red Ale. This special hopped up brew taps at 3pm and will kick quickly. Coming up on Saturday, March 9th, they'll be welcoming the return of their Czech Pilsner on tap. March 15th brings a brew made just for the week of St. Patrick's Day - a Dry Irish Stout on nitro tap! If that's not enough, on March 20th stop in for Great Scot! It's a Scottish Brown Ale made with BACON! Always something new coming on tap at Copper Kettle.

Littlest Big Barrel Aged Beer FestHops & Pie (Denver) - You've heard of their monthly Littlest Big Beer Fests, but have you heard of their upcoming Littlest Big Barrel Aged Beer Fest? It's slated for Saturday, March 16th starting at 12pm sharp! They'll be tapping several barrel-aged Colorado brews including: Great Divide Bourbon Barrel Aged Hibernation, Renegade Brewing's Bourbon Barrel Aged Cherub Rock, Oskar Blues' Bourbon Barrel Aged Ten Fidy, River North's Bourbon Barrel Aged Avarice, and Odell Brewing's Bourbon Barrel Aged Mountain Standard & Lugene Blend. This is a 1 day only event. These brews were aged in first run Makers Mark barrels. Single pours & tasters will be available. Located at 3920 Tennyson Street in Denver, CO.

Wynkoop Brewing Co (Denver) - Coming up on Thursday, March 28th at the brewery from 4pm to 6pm will be a release party for their Cottonwood Organic White beer. There will be a Happy Hour celebration with specials on this brew and others. More info at www.cottonwoodinstitute.org. Also, baseball season is almost here. Rockies Opening Day is set for Friday, April 5th. Avoid the long lines at the ballpark and get their $10 pre-game lunch buffet.

Boulder County

Twisted Pine Brewing (Boulder) - Colorado Craft Beer Week is going to be busy at Twisted Pine. Their line-up includes: Post Patty's Pain (March 18th) - fight your St. Paddy's Day hangover with dimmed lights, $2.50 bloody Billy's and Geeks Who Drink trivia. Artisan Gallery (March 19th) - new art from local CO artists. Women Who Brew (March 20th) - celebrate women in brewing with a free lecture and tour at 3pm. Buy a pint for $5 and keep the glass. Blind Beers (March 21st) - Get a blind food & beer tasting from Unseen Bean owner Gerry who is blind. Cost $25. Ghost Face Challenge (March 22nd) - See if you can eat a pizza topped with ghost peppers and finish a Ghost Face Killah beer in 5 minutes. Winners receive a special t-shirt and name up on the Wall of Fame. Brew-U (March 23rd) - a 3-hour course on brewing from brewmaster Bob Baile - cost $75. And finally on March 24th it's Brewery Olympics ($10/team) - compete with your own team for the gold. Also a new beer tapping every day of that week!

Mountain Sun (Boulder) - The new Under the Sun Eatery and Taphouse is now open 7 days a week. Staying true to Mountain Sun’s commitment to excellent craft beer, Under the Sun features 21 Mountain Sun brews on tap. Additionally, there are always 10 Belgian and craft beers on tap as well as a selection of sustainable red and white wines on tap. Under the Sun is also offering its World Famous Margarita on tap, the first cocktail to be served on tap in Boulder. Located directly 1 floor below the Southern Sun in Boulder, CO.

West Flanders Brewing (Boulder) - Celebrate 6 months of spreading the beer love with a free growler! To qualify, try 9 beers at West Flanders. Sign up for a beer passport with your server. Use your passport to try 9 different beers before March 23rd and win a free growler and fill.

Northern Colorado

Crabtree Brewing (Greeley) - Scary moment last weekend. The front wall of the Crabtree taproom was slightly damaged last Saturday night when a man accidentally backed his truck into the front of the building. The force of the impact broke out one of the windows, left a small hole in the wall, and sent a table full of customers to the floor. Nobody was seriously injured or hospitalized. Crabtree Brewery was only closed for about an hour following the incident and was open again later that night. Owner and brewer Jeff Crabtree stated that no major structural damage was incurred and the building was deemed safe to continue business by the fire department. Never fear - the beer is still pouring!

New Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins) - New Belgium is heading to the last frontier - Alaska! On March 18th they plan to begin distributing many of their beers to the 50th state. In honor of that occasion, New Belgium came up with a special commemorative label for their Fat Tire 22oz bombers. In a recent interview with TheStreet, CEO Kim Jordan stated that they anticipate expanding out to even more states, especially in the Northeast US in the next few years thanks to their upcoming opening of their 2nd brewery in Asheville, NC. Jordan listed the possibility of opening in states like Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts in coming years, but won't go there until they have sufficient capacity to supply those large states.

Verboten Brewing (Loveland) - Radio show alert! Today at 6:00pm, Verboten's Josh Grenz will be a guest on the air on the "Bikes and Beer" show on KRFC 88.9FM (Ft. Collins) talking about his favorite subject - BEER! Tune in and find out what's the latest at Loveland's newest brewery.

Odell Brewing (Ft. Collins) - During Colorado Craft Beer Week (March 18-24, 2013) Odell will be tapping a new cask every day. Special live music in the tap room on Saturday the 23rd. The taproom is now open on Sundays too!

Southern Front Range

Great Storm Brewing (Colorado Springs) - Come join in on Wednesday, March 13th, 2013, to celebrate the brewery's one year anniversary. Local bluesman BJ Estares returns to bring live blues from 5-8 pm, and starting at 11 am they'll have some special beer releases: Their first ever collaboration beer, a tangerine chocolate rye brown brewed with the awesome folks at Phantom Canyon Brewing Co. Also, Pollinator Saison, a saison brewed by Bevan Zarges-Griego with orange blossom honey. Also - Happy Birthday, a vanilla double pils with an entire from-scratch birthday cake thrown into the mash. Plus some other surprises!

Mountains and West

Ska Brewing Company (Durango) - Now that March is here Spring is coming soon. On the Vernal Equinox, March 20th 2013, Ska Brewing will officially release the next in their series of Seasonal Stouts - this time it's their Vernal Minthe Stout, a stout made with mint! The release party will start at the brewery and run from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with $3 pints of this minty stout. Cans of this beer will hit the shelves soon after. A portion of the proceeds of this beer will be given to benefit the Colorado Brewers Guild. The last in the series of seasonal stouts will debut around June 21st at the Summer Solstice.
