Colorado Beer NewsIt's the first day of July. The second half of the year starts today! What are you planning to do for the rest of the year? It might be a good time to try a new craft beer and get ready for the big holiday weekend ahead. It is also Zip Code Day and U.S. Postage Stamp Day. And for the first time it's "Homebrew is Legal Nationwide Day". North of the border it's also Canada Day. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Monday, July 1st, 2013.

Don't Drink & Drive - A friendly reminder that state and local police patrols are beefing up DUI checkpoints this week for the upcoming holiday. If you choose to enjoy a craft beer or two please be sure to bring a designated driver with you or call a taxi to get yourself home. It's not worth the $10,000+ in fees, fines, and embarrassment when you get caught.

Metro Denver

Yak & Yeti Restaurant & Brewery (Arvada) - Today marks the tapping of their 5-Year Anniversary Ale and it's a big one - a Triple IPA weighing in at 15% ABV and a big 100+ IBU. The tapping happens at 4pm. Stop in and wish them a happy 5 years! Also, tomorrow is their 5th Anniversary Beer Dinner at 6pm which includes 4 courses and 4 beers. Sign up at the restaurant.

Independence Eve (Denver) - After the symphony and fireworks are done around 9:30pm, there will be an official after party at the McNichols Building in Civic Center Park that goes until 1:00 AM. There will be plenty of craft beer, fancy cocktails, buckets o'freedom and great music until the wee hours. Check out for tickets and details.

Factotum Brewhouse (Denver) - With just 20 days left to go in their Kickstarter fundraising campaign, Factotum Brewhouse is over 75% of the way to their goal of raising $8,000 to help beautify and finish off their brewhouse taproom project in Denver. This brewery plans to let homebrewers be the brewmasters and put their beers on tap at the brewery for the public to enjoy. If you'd like to help them reach their goal, please check them out on Kickstarter!

Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery (Denver) - And speaking of Kickstarter, another Denver area brewery is using Kickstarter to help fund their upcoming brewery in Denver. They are trying to raise over $25,000 in the next 23 days. Already they've raised nearly $3,000 towards that goal. They have a location signed for at 1139 20th Street. If all goes according to plan, they hope to open around Labor Day this year. They plan to use the funds to purchase needed equipment. Check out their Kickstarter page to see what they are planning.

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - On July 20, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 PM, Copper Kettle Brewing Company will remember and pay tribute to those whose lives were lost in the Aurora theater tragedy one year ago, including one of their own, Alex Teves, who was of the 12 lives lost that day. 11 Colorado breweries will come together with them, along with 4 food trucks and 2 bands. 100% of proceeds from ticket sales, along with a silent auction, will be donated to the ACT Foundation and Phoenix 999 from the night. Biergarten Festival (Morrison) - The 17th Annual Biergarten Festival is returning to the TEV Edelweiss Pavilion in Morrison, Colorado on Friday through Sunday, July 12th to 14th. This is an opportunity to experience and enjoy the spirit of the traditional Biergartens found primarily in southern Germany since the 19th century. Originally these were a Sunday or holiday outing for the entire family. More recently Biergartens are found in local neighborhoods. This event is sponsored by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest (Colorado Chapter). The event will be held from 4pm to 10pm on Friday the 12, Saturday the 13th from 11am to 10pm, and a Sunday “Frühschoppen” with a German brunch buffet, 10am to 2pm. More info at:

Hops & Pie (Denver) - Don't forget that this Friday, July 5th at 6pm will be the Firkin 1st Friday at Hops & Pie. This month features a cask of Green Flash Brewing Company's West Coast IPA that's been double dry hopped with Simcoe hops. You'll need to pair that with a slice of pizza pie or two. Hops & Pie can provide both at 3920 Tennyson Street in Denver, CO.

Bull & Bush Pub and Brewery (Denver) - Have you gotten your MAN BEER in bottles yet? It's now at several select liquor stores around Denver. Also, back at the taproom, every Friday this month Bull & Bush will be offering up a new gravity keg when the doors open. These are limited batches including: Mahr's Bockbier (July 5th), Weissenohe Bonator (July 12th), Mahr's Hell (July 19th), and Aufsesser Festbeir (July 26th). These kegs will only last 1 night so get there early!

River North Brewery (Denver) - This Wednesday's Wayward tapping is a collaboration effort with Mr. B's Wine & Spirits called B-Side Quandary. It's their Quandary quadrupel aged in bourbon barrels with cherries. A 5 gallon batch will tap at 3pm this Wednesday, July 3rd.

Boulder County

Avery Brewing Company (Boulder) - Tickets went on sale today for their upcoming 20th Anniversary Party slated for Sunday, August 4th. Avery plans to pull out some rare beers from Adam Avery's personal collection for this one including rare and special sours, wilds, strong ales, and IPAs. There will also be BBQ being served and some great music. Check out their Facebook event page or their website: for more details. Hurry this event will sell out fast! (If not already). Front Range Brewing Co (Lafayette) - Last Saturday, June 29th, another brewery held a soft opening. Front Range Brewing Company opened it's door for a test run of their new brewery. Their official grand opening will be held on Saturday, July 13th. They are located at 400 W. South Boulder Road, Suite 1650 in Lafayette, Colorado.

Truth in Brewing Festival (Broomfield) - Here is a small festival that promotes great music and great local craft beer. It's the "Truth in Brewing Festival" slated for this Saturday, July 6th starting at 2pm at The Old Man Bar in Broomfield, CO (4381 W. 120th). Featuring live music from Policulture and The Jeff Brinkman Band and craft beers from Oskar Blues, Asher Brewing, Upslope Brewing, Big Choice Brewing and Twisted Pine Brewing. Tickets available at Tickets are $40 per person.

Northern Colorado

Wiley Roots Brewing Company (Greeley) - Last Saturday, June 29th marked the soft opening for Greeley's newest brewery. Kyle & Miranda Carbaugh opened up their newly renovated building at 625 3rd Street Unit D in Greeley, Colorado and had two beers available for an initial shakedown run. Fermentedly Challenged was on hand and took some photos of their new brewhouse and taproom. They plan to officially open on July 20th, but in the meantime they will open again on Saturdays and Sundays July 6-7 and 13-14 for limited hours.

Funkwerks (Ft. Collins) - Tomorrow, July 2nd, Funkwerks will be releasing their summer seasonal called "Provincial", a Belgian-style Ale. Sold in bottles to take home with you.

Southern Front Range

Pikes Peak Brewing Co (Monument) - Due to the recent fireworks and beer tent cancellation from the city of Monument, Pikes Peak Brewing will be hosting a Virtual Fireworks Show in their Beer Garden. They will project a previously recorded music and fireworks show at dusk to let you get into the Independence spirit. PPBC is also selling a very limited series of beer call the Penrose Private Reserve. Their recent No. 1302 is their Gold Rush Belgian Style Golden Ale aged in wine barrels. You can find bottles of this at the brewery and select local liquor stores. Coming up soon a Whiskey Barrel Stout! Also, now look for their Elephant Rock IPA now in 16oz can 4-packs in Monument, Colorado Springs, Castle Rock and South Denver!

Mountains and West

Steamworks Brewing Co (Durango) - This Friday brings a very special firkin tapping at Steamworks. This month's Firkin Friday is called "If You Like Pina Coladas". It's a very summery brew made with a Hefeweizen base, toasted coconuts, pineapple juice and brown sugar. It'll remind you of a Pina Colada for sure! It taps at 3pm on Friday, July 5th.

Breckenridge Summer Beer Fest (Breckenridge) - The 10th annual Breckenridge Summer Beer Festival is coming up on Saturday, July 13th from 1pm to 6pm. The event is located at Ridge Street in Downtown Breckenridge between Lincoln and Washington. 30 breweries will be on hand offering unlimited beer tastings. Grab an Unlimited tasting mug or opt to buy the VIP Glass Mug. Live music will also be playing from 1-6pm. Tickets are $25 or $65 (VIP). More info at:

Homebrewing (Nationwide) - Did you know? Today marks the first day since before prohibition that homebrewing is legal in all 50 states. Mississippi's homebrewing law went into effect just today. Celebrate the total legalization of homebrewing!
