Loveland prepares for festival with BBQ and Beer pairing competition

It's a rough job, but someone had to do it. I'm talking about being a judge at a BBQ and Beer pairing competition. Verboten Brewing hosted a pre-festival event last night that pitted two area BBQ businesses and two local breweries against each other in a contest to see who could come up with the best BBQ & Beer pairings in 3 categories: chicken, pork and beef dishes.

These dishes were in consideration for the best of show in the upcoming Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & Brews festival slated for July 12th & 13th, 2013 in downtown Loveland, CO. Fermentedly Challenged was invited to be a judge once again in this 2nd annual evening competition.

Members of the Greater Loveland business community were in attendance and also got to sample some of the best BBQ recipes from Outlawz BBQ and Bedrock BBQ, both who are located in Northern Colorado. There were also several different beers from Verboten Brewing and Loveland Aleworks that were specially paired with 6 different dishes. Sponsors of Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & Brews include: Sertoma, American Eagle Distributing Company, City of Loveland, K99 Radio, Outlets at Loveland, Bank of Colorado, Banner Health McKee Medical Center, Best Western Plus, Country Financial, Fred's Used Websites, Good Samaritan Society, Home State Bank, Mueller & Associates CPA, Poudre Valley REA and Wilbur's Total Beverage. There are also another dozen or more Bronze Sponsors as well as sponsors of the Car Show that will also take place during the festival.

Members of the judging panel included Kristin Mastre from FeastingFortCollins.com, Heidi Kerr-Schlaefer, aka the Mayor from HeidiTown.com, Lauren Hoff from NapaOfBeer.com, and yours truly, Dave Butler from FermentedlyChallenged.com. This event was being organized by E. L. Events who plan and sponsor community events in the Loveland Colorado area. Between the 4 judges, they had a lot of food, festival and beer experience between them.

The two BBQ companies each served three dishes. The first comparison was a chicken BBQ dish. Bedrock BBQ served chicken brined with Verboten Brewing's strawberry rhubarb wheat beer, then smoked over apple and hickory wood. It was paired with Verboten's "In Love with Summer" - strawberry rhubarb wheat beer. Outlawz BBQ served a smoked chicken with a burning side of "Kicker" sauce that was primed with an imperial stout from Loveland Aleworks and also served with the same beer.

The second food comparison were pork BBQ dishes. Outlawz served pork ribs with a glaze of their "original sauce". This was paired with Loveland Aleworks' American Sour with Raspberries. Bedrock BBQ offered their championship ribs marinated in a caramel porter from Verboten and also served with "Killer Boots" caramel porter.

The last food comparison of the evening was a beef dish. Bedrock served a Tri-Tip Steak served with bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers and paired with Verboten's Angry Banjor Kentucky Common. On the side was some candied bacon. Outlawz BBQ created a savory brisket, smoked low and slow and dished up with a side of Outlawz Gold. This dish was paired with Loveland Aleworks' Belgian Dubbel.

By the end of these dishes, the judges finalized their score sheets and were stuffed to the gills with great food and beer. The eventual winner was declared to be Outlawz BBQ but the narrowest of margins over Bedrock BBQ. Bedrock also won an award for Best Presentation.

Look for some of these dishes to be served at the upcoming Loveland Loves BBQ, Bands & Brews on July 12th & 13th, along with BBQ dishes from 19 other BBQ businesses. Beers from Big Beaver Brewing, Grimm Brothers Brewhouse, Loveland Aleworks and Verboten Brewing will also be poured during the festival. During the 2-day event, over 10 bands will perform for the crowd free of charge.
