Colorado Beer NewsToday is Senior Citizens Day. Just a hundred years ago, if a person lived to the age of 55, 60 or 65, they were considered as having lived a long life. Today, people live a lot longer, yet we still call people a "senior citizen" as early as 55. Celebrate this day and consider sharing a craft beer with a "senior" in your life. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, August 21st, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on, you don't know what you're missing.

Metro Denver

Tour de Fat (Denver) - Denver it's your turn! [Press Release] If dressing freaky, riding bikes, listening to bands and drinking beer are things you like, then don’t miss the most FUN fundraiser around… Tour de Fat is coming back to town! New Belgium Brewing is bringing the 14th annual Tour de Fat back to Denver on Saturday, September 7 in City Park. Gather up your friends, family and neighbors and come enjoy eclectic entertainment and stellar beer, all while helping local bicycle nonprofits raise funds. The event is free, yet all proceeds from beer and merchandise sales and donations from parade participants will help make Denver a better place to ride a bike. Last year, approximately 11,000 people came to the festival and raised more than $71,450 for local nonprofits. Parade registration starts at 10am that day and the Ride starts at 11am and runs for about an hour. Entertainment & Revivalation then runs from 12pm to 5pm. Follow the fun on Facebook for more info.

Freshcraft (Denver) - Denver's fresh food & craft beer spot is celebrating their 3rd Anniversary Party on Saturday, August 24th all day long. The chefs have come up with special house made BBQ dishes and will be tapping some extra special beers for the occasion including: Stone Farking Wheaton W00tStout, Oskar Blues Appleton Rum Barrel Aged Ten Fidy, Ska Cru D'├ętat, plus some special cocktails and Templeton Lemonades. Stop in for lunch, a bite, dinner or just a drink!

Comrade Brewing Company (Denver) - Another new brewery has announced plans to come to Denver in 2014 - Comrade Brewing Company. They plan to locate in the southeast section of the Denver area at 7667 E. Iliff Avenue. Track them on the web at: or on Facebook. They've for their Federal license and are now applying for their Colorado state license. This brewery is all about camaraderie and "back-to-basics" beers. They plan to have a taproom and brew on a 15 bbl system.

Ruby Alpha at Jagged MountainJagged Mountain Craft Brewery (Denver) - What kind of pilot system does a start-up use when waiting for their main brewhouse system? In the case of Jagged Mountain, they obtained a new Alpha Ruby system (1 barrel) from Ruby Street Brewing in Fort Collins. They'll be perfecting their recipes on that until their main system from JV Northwest arrives. This new brewery is locating at 1139 20th Street in Denver, CO - just 3 blocks from Coors Field. Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project (Denver) - Work has been underway at their new upcoming location at The Source. Chad Yakobson and crew have been building out a new 20-bbl brewhouse complete with a Belgian-style brewing vessel. The new location should be open sometime this Fall. Using this new location, they plan to nearly triple production and sell even more beer out of state. Their brewhouse was built by Metalcraft Fabrication (Oregon) and has taken nearly a year to design. Follow their progress on Facebook. Meanwhile, at their current taproom, they recently tapped "Musty Cedar Box", a burgundy sour that was aged in bourbon barrels. Get some!

Yak & Yeti (Arvada) - For a limited time, a new batch of Sherpa Prima, a robust porter aged for 6 months in a Leopold Brothers small batch whiskey barrel is now available on their Haunted Series tap handle. It's a 5.4% ABV brew but is full-flavored like a bigger beer.

Prost Brewing (Denver) - Continue on with their week-long 1st Anniversary celebration, Prost is offering special 1st Year Anniversary glasses. For $10 you'll get a big fill of beer and get to keep the glass! Then it's $4 refills all night long.

Boulder County

Avery Brewing (Boulder) - Fans of limited release sour ales will want to attend a special release party at Avery this Sunday, August 25th at 5pm. This is the day Avery will release the 17th in their Barrel-Aged Series - Thensaurum, a rum barrel-aged sour ale. This will be a one-time only brew and it drinks like a rum cocktail with aromas including pineapple, tropical fruit with dry, acidic and sour notes. Just 276 cases of this beer were made. Each bottle will sell for $10 with a 12 bottle limit per person. Other release dates: duganA IPA August 21st, Rumpkin (barrel-aged pumpkin ale) September 22nd.

Odd13 Brewing (Lafayette) - They may have been open for a short time, but they're scheduling an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony tomorrow, August 22nd at 4:30pm. Starting September 11th, Odd13 Brewing be tapping a new small batch every Wednesday at 6:00 PM. They'll have 2 varieties of each batch. Each week, vote for the one you like best. Also look for weekly foosball tournaments on Thursdays starting August 29th as well as Team Trivia on Tuesdays starting August 27th.

Sanitas tappingSanitas Brewing (Boulder) - [Press Release] After months of planning, Boulder welcomes new artisanal brewery Sanitas Brewing Company. As a pre-release to their Grand Opening, Sanitas has teamed up with Rueben’s Burger Bistro for a limited tapping of Summer Snow White IPA. Sanitas Brewing Company’s first beer is described as a citrusy, light-bodied IPA with the refreshing qualities of a Wibier. A special tapping of Summer Snow White IPA will be featured at Reuben’s Burger Bistro on Saturday August 24th at 6pm. The Sanitas owners will be on hand to help host the event and give away door prizes. It's describes as a refreshing, enjoyable beer but with a twist. Sanitas Brewing Company is scheduled to open in Central Boulder in the coming weeks.

Northern Colorado

City Star Brewing (Berthoud) - Coming up next Tuesday, August 27th from 7pm to 9pm is another themed potluck dinner at City Star. This month, the theme is "Summer Grilling". They'll have a grill available out on their patio. Bring in a grilling themed dish or side to pass and join in with all the other City Star fans for a night of good food and beer. City Star will provide paper plates, napkins and silverware. If you cook your dish with a City Star beer as an ingredient, you'll receive a FREE beer!

Fall Harvest Brewfest (Ft. Collins) - One of the first Fall beer fests of the season is coming to Fort Collins on Friday, September 6th at the Lincoln Center at 6pm. It's the annual Fall Harvest Brew Fest featuring beers from over 40 craft breweries and micro-distilleries - plus food pairings! Want to go? Want a chance to win two FREE VIP Tickets (worth $110)? Hop Harvest Fest (Windsor) - Plan to attend the annual Hop Harvest Fest at High Hops Hop Farm in Windsor on Sunday, September 1st. Help them harvest hundreds of pounds of hops for a chance to WIN 2 GABF Tickets as well as other great prizes. There will also be live music, food and plenty of High Hops beer. Wynkoop Brewing (Denver) - Stop down to the brewery this Friday at 9:00am, yup AM, and help Wynkoop Brewing pick hops and drink beer and perhaps even help them make their latest brew called "Humiliation Lipgloss", a wet hopped double IPA.

Southern Front Range

Smiling Toad Brewery (Colorado Springs) - Heat got you down? Feeling tired, run down? Try their Electric Espresso Stout. Cool and creamy, this dark brew should help lift your spirits. Also on tap is their Summer Blonde, Irish Ale, IPA, and their Bella Lavender Lager.

Mountains and West

The Great Central City Beer Fest (Central City) - The 2nd annual Central City Beer Festival will be held this Saturday the 24th on Main Street in Central City. They will be pouring beers from over 18 different local breweries. Come up and enjoy some great beer while you listen to music from The Young Dubliners, Marty Jones & the Great Unknowns, and Jewel in the Rough. Event runs from 12 noon to 7pm. Horsefly Brewery (Montrose) - Hey Dude! It's a 70s Party at Horsefly Brewing Company this Saturday, August 24th from 7-10pm. Dig out those go-go boots and fluff your afro then join in to boogie down on the patio complete with lasers and a live DJ playin all your 70's faves. There will also be a costume contest at 8pm. Can you dig it? Bell bottoms and large lapel jackets encouraged. Plus, lots of Horsefly craft beer will be flowing.
