Colorado Beer NewsToday marks the start of October and the countdown to the #GABF. The focus for this month is the wrap up of the Oktoberfest season, the change over to fall and winter seasonals (after all it is snowing up in the mountains already) and the approach of Halloween at the end of the month. Several breweries, brewpubs and beer bars are already starting up their pre-GABF festivities. Get ready for a great month of craft beer in Colorado! Here's what's happening around the Colorado craft beer scene today Tuesday, October 1st, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Metro Denver

River North Brewery (Denver) - Today in the brewhouse their staff is busy bottling the new B-Side Quandary Quadrupel that's set for a release this Saturday, October 5th. If you stop by today, you can order one of Spent's legendary pretzels to go with your beers.

Barrels & Bottles (Golden) - This week the brewery has their Barrels & Bottles Berlinerweiss on tap. It's described as having a "refreshing tart taste, with 50% wheat and 50% barley with the lack of hops, a smooth & drinkable beer at just 3.4% ABV and 5 IBU".

Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project (Denver) - As part of their debut at The Source, on October 9th in their new location they will be releasing "Origins Batch #2" in bottles. This is a Burgundy Sour Ale that pays hommage to the history of barrel-aging and those who have influenced them along the way. The bottle release starts at 11:00am in The Source taproom. There's a 6 bottle limit - 1st come 1st served. (Please don't trample each other m'kay?)

Beer By Design Brewery (Northglenn) - t's back!!! Their Platinum Blonde is back on tap at the Beer By Design Tap Room. It's also available on tap at The Glenn Bar & Grille.

Coda Brewing Co (Aurora) - The City of Aurora has approved their build-out plans and now construction has begun on this new brewery on Tuscon Way. Look for an early 2014 opening.

Boulder County

Gravity Brewing (Louisville) - Tonight in their beer parlour they will be hosting a Flood Relief Happy Hour. Come listen to two different musical performers (John Bunzli & Erica Sunshine Lee) from 5-7pm. It's a free show. They will be taking donations for the Colorado flood relief victims.

Boulder Beer Shake Chocolate PorterBoulder Beer Company (Boulder) - Guess what just rolled off the bottling line today? It's their brand new "Shake Chocolate Porter". It's described as "their twist on the traditional robust American Porter, Shake Chocolate Porter is dark black in color with rich, sweet aromatics and flavors of dark chocolate, coffee and caramel. This unique brew blends five different grains, including Chocolate Wheat, that along with cacao nibs create a devilishly delicious chocolate finish with a velvety mouthfeel." It starts shipping to locations across Colorado this week. The brew weighs in at 5.9% ABV and 39 IBU's. Available in 12oz 6-packs.

Twisted Pine Brewing (Boulder) - Their GABF Week special tappings and events list has been released and there's bound to be a beer for every taste. On Mon. Oct 7th - the return of Reilly's Oak Whiskey Red. Brewed just once every 15 months. On Tues. Oct 8th - a tapping of Northstar Imperial Porter (9% ABV), Wed. Oct 9th - Wilson's Sour Brown, Thurs. Oct 10th - Big Shot O' Bourbon (whiskey barrel aged Big Shot Espresso Stout), Fri. Oct. 11th - India Pumpkin Ale, Sat. October 12th - Oak Aged IPA with live streaming of the GABF awards ceremony, and finally on Sun. Oct. 13th - a Kiwanis Benefit where 10% of all sales that day will benefit the Kiwanis Club. Silent auction 12-6pm too.

Oskar Blues (Longmont) - Have you gotten your tickets to the 2013 Oskar Blues Ordeal yet? Tickets are going fast for the 3 events spread out over 3 days (Oct 9-11, 2013). For the past two years, Oskar Blues has put on the "Oskar Blues Ordeal" bus trips during GABF week which offers GABF-goers and craft beer lovers the chance to go backstage at all of our locations and check out what we're all about. So here's how it works: They'll pick you up outside of the Falling Rock Tap House in Denver and show you around their digs in Longmont and Lyons, and they'll even get all ColoRADo on ya and show you around their Hops and Heifers Farm. They're serving up classic and specialty Oskar Blues beers all day and will keep you well fed with BBQ and Cajun-style meals throughout each day. Left Hand Brewing (Longmont) - Fans of their "Fade to Black" series of beers will want to attend the #GABF Friday night (Oct 11th) tapping event at Falling Rock Tap House in Denver. Falling Rock will be tapping all 5 volumes of Left Hand's Fade to Black beers side by side. Vol 1 - Export Stout, Vol 2 - Smoked Baltic Porter, Vol 3 - Pepper Porter, Vol 4 - Rocky Mountain Black Ale - and Vol 5 - Black Rye Ale.

BRU (Boulder) - Come help roll out the proverbial barrel this Thursday at BRU. They will be celebrating all things Oktoberfest. Compete in the best dressed lederhosen contest, as well as a deck out your growler contest @ 7pm ! BRU will also be serving up some awesomely inspired German ales & eats specials! So grab a friend and come on over!

Wild Woods Brewery (Boulder) - Their barrel-aged brew is ready! It's finally time and you get to drink this very special beer this Friday, 10/4 at 4pm! It's their "Treeline IPA" aged in freshly emptied Roundhouse Spirits Gin barrels. The gin botanicals complement the hoppy and piney flavors of the beer and it is all smoothed out by the vanilla character of the oak. Weighs in at 7.3% ABV. This is a rare opportunity to have a gin-barrel aged beer.

Northern Colorado

The Mayor of Old Town (Ft. Collins) - Lots of events coming up at the Mayor leading up to next week's Great American Beer Festival. Tonight two events: 1) Meet the Brewer Night featuring the brewer from High Hops Brewery of Windsor, CO. It's part of their "Tap Into Northern Colorado" tap takeover event. Listen to the brewer and sample their beers. 2) Meet author Emily Hutto. She will be on hand to sign copies of her new book "Colorado Top Brewers" that features the Mayor of Old Town. Books will be available for purchase as well. More events happening daily - stay tuned.

Funkwerks (Ft. Collins) - Head on over to The Astoria in Ft. Collins on Wednesday night from 8pm to 10pm for a Funkwerks tap takeover. You'll be able to meet and chat with a Funkwerks rep and if you order a Funkwerks beer early you might just walk away with a free logo tulip glass to add to your collection. The Astoria is located at: 146 N. College Avenue. Also enjoy extended taproom hours next week for GABF week (see Facebook for details).

Pateros Creek Brewing (Ft. Collins) - Today's Tuesday special is that you can get any of their Legends beers in a PCBC growler today for just $7.00.

Loveland Aleworks (Loveland) - You know the drill by now. It's Tuesday and that means if you wear your Loveland Aleworks shirt to the taproom you'll get $1 off your beers all day long! Grab some food from Billy's Chaulkboard Gourmet Express while you're there. Also, live music in the taproom tonight as well from Sonny Boy Zain.

City Star Brewing (Berthoud) - Along with their mainstay beers, stop in and try one of their specialty beers on tap including: Berthoud Beet, Rail RYEder, Fresh Hop Revolver, Dead or Alive, or Chai Watchman. They've got a potluck dinner going on tonight around 6:30pm. Bring a dish to share and you're in like Flint! Also, look for these beers that are being brewed and will be tapping soon: Altoberfest, Up All Night Watchman, Cabernet Barrel-aged Raspberry Bandit, and Country Pumpkin!

High Hops Brewery (Windsor) - Head to The Mayor of Old Town tonight for Meet the Brewer Night featuring High Hops Brewery from 6pm - 8pm. Back at the taproom on Wednesday they'll be tapping a firkin of Cherbocka (Cherry Bock) at 5pm October 2nd. While you're there grab some food from Big City Burrito.

Southern Front Range

Smiling Toad Brewery (Colorado Springs) - FYI - upcoming beer release notice. Today the crew is kegging their Pumpkin beer and will be set to put it up on tap this Friday, October 4th. Manna Mobile will be on site serving up their Octoberfest foods that day as well.

Pikes Peak Brewing (Monument) - Did you know that you can now find 3 of their beers in cans? Yup. Devil's Head Red, Local 5 Pale Ale, and Elephant Rock IPA. Find them in Colorado Springs, Monument, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree. Also, stop in for live music on Saturdays 7-10pm in their Barrel Room. Also, later this month look for these beers to get tapped: Beer 4 Boobies, Chipotle Porter, and Hot Shot Green Chili Ale.

Trinity Brewing (Colorado Springs) - Here's Trinity's GABF scheduled events. Fri. Oct. 4th - Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta' bottle re-release at 5pm. Sat. Oct 5th is their First Saturday Firkin at 11am with a house IPA firkin. Mon. Oct. 7th - Special Trinity pours at Ernie's Bar & Pizza (Denver) at 7pm, also TPS Report tapped at Hops & Pie @ 8pm. Tues. Oct 8th @ Falling Rock Tap House (Denver) tapping Old Growth @ 5pm. Wed. Oct 9th - 5th annual Funk, Farmhouse and Firkin tappings at their taproom at 12pm. Fri. Oct. 11th - Old Growth Bottle Release @ 12pm at the brewery. Later on in October on the 17th it's their All Pumpkin Beer tappings at 5pm including pumpkin beers from Dogfish Head, Dry Dock, New Belgium and more. Then on Friday, Oct. 18th it the Farmhouse Walloon Tapping at 5pm. Finally, on Friday, Oct. 25th it's a Merle, Saison Nocturnum Release at 5pm (12.2% ABV rare).

Mountains and West

Elevation Beer Co (Poncha Springs) - FYI - On Tuesdays from now until May 2014, their tasting room will be closed on that day of the week. If the Federal government can shut down so can they. On the bright side, their Monday night Local Night is back! Check www.elevationbeerco.com for details.
