Colorado Beer NewsToday is iPod Day. It was on this day back in 2001 that Apple unveiled the first iPod and from then on the world of music was changed forever. Today, downloadable music is on just about every portable device. Celebrate the day by listening to some music on your favorite portable device whether it be Apple or other. What's going to be the next big innovation? Around here, that innovation is craft beer! Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on, you don't know what you're missing.

Learn to Homebrew Day (Nationwide) - It’s the one of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States, and now that it’s legal in all 50 states, everyone can get involved in the one of the biggest trends bubbling up across the country. To help you hop headfirst into the homebrewing hobby, the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is celebrating Learn to Homebrew Day on November 2. The AHA established Learn to Homebrew Day in 1999 to encourage people to make their own homebrews. Additional information can be found in the release below and on the AHA website. Check your local Colorado homebrew shops for details on demonstrations scheduled for November 2nd.

Metro Denver

Two22 Brew (Centennial) - Centennial, Colorado is about to get a new brewery. Two22 Brew is currently under construction and hopes to open before the end of the year in December. They are renovating a space at 4550 S. Reservoir Road. They are listed as offering Philanthropic Colorado craft beers. They plan to donate $2.22 of every $10 to Colorado charities! So the more beer you buy the more you help Colorado! Follow their progress on Facebook and at their web site:

Arvada Beer Co (Arvada) - Today's anniversary beer tapping is their Barrel-Aged Dopplebock, a hefty 12% ABV brew. There's still some Cherry Sour and Nitro Wheatwine on tap from earlier this week too.

Rackhouse Pub (Denver) - The Rackhouse Pub is celebrating their 4th anniversary this Saturday and will be throwing a Ska Brewing Tap Takeover featuring 20+ Ska beers! It's a Skanniversary! Included with the tap takeover will be a costume party, live music at 10pm and no cover charge. Check out the Ska line-up: Big Shikes Orange Imperial Pilsener, Buster Nut Brown, Decadent Imperial IPA, Dementia, Dubbel Blonde, ESB, Estival Cream Stout, Euphoria Pale Ale, Hoperation Ivy, Mexican Logger, Minthe Stout, Modus Hoperandi IPA, Mole Stout, Necherrious Cherry Imperial Porter, Nefarious Ten Pin Imperial Porter, Pinstripe Red Ale, Steel Toe Stout, Taster’s Choice Coffee Doppelbock, Ten Pin Porter, True Blonde, Two Tone Montanya, and Vinifera Stout. The celebration lasts all day October 26th.

Great Divide Brewing Co (Denver) - For the rest of the month, Great Divide is donating 100% of the proceeds from the samples poured in their Tap Room to local nonprofit groups. In particular - Foothills United Way and EFAAneeds for all of their Colorado flood relief efforts. Drinking beer can definitely be a charitable act!

CAUTION: Brewing Co (Denver) - The brewery is announcing their very first ever bottle release. They made 20 cases of hand signed, numbered and labeled 22oz bottles of their Toaster Bat Black, a beer aged in a single bourbon barrel. The brew uses German smoked and UK peated malts and has chocolate notes. The brew will release at 2pm on Saturday, November 2nd. Bottles are $25 and limited to 2 bottles per person. Also look for their Lakewood taproom to open sometime in the second half of November.

Great American Beer Festival (Denver) - The film crew from Conan O'Brien along with Triumph the Insult Dog were on hand at the GABF and made a video during one of the sessions. Watch Triumph as he insults his way around the convention floor and ends up forgetting why he came. Check out the video below or on YouTube. Next year's GABF happens October 2-4, 2014.

Dad & Dude's Breweria (Aurora) - Did you know that D&DB makes their pizza dough from spent grains? And it pairs perfectly with their beer. Today on tap try their Fathom Amber Ale, Prickly in Pink, Muffin Top IPA, and Rough Drought Pale Ale. Plus several guest beers on tap as well from Great Divide, Left Hand, Ska and more. Stop in for Poker Night every Wednesday night at 8:00pm. Great prizes and free to play!

Black Sky Brewery (Denver) - Black Sky is offering up their "Petal to the Metal" ale with rose petals and hibiscus for $3 all day long today. Stop in for a taste.

American Craft Beer Radio (102.3 FM Denver) - Host Gary V wants to invite you to their "2013 Holiday Beer Bash" on Friday, November 22nd at Mile High Station from 6pm to 9pm. With more than 30 Breweries and almost 100 beers to sample as well as several local Chefs serving up some Great Holiday treats and prizes prizes prizes this will be a night to remember. This is a very limited admission party and you won't want to miss it. Tickets are $35.00 for general admission (6pm-9pm) and only $45.00 for VIP's (5pm-9pm) at Don't forget to listen to their show live every Saturday at Noon on 102.3 FM.

Rockyard Brewing (Castle Rock) - What's the Jellyman's Deviation this week? Stop in Friday at 4pm for a taste of "Funkyjellyiciousness" - funky pumpkin saison. This bad boy weighs in at 8% ABV and is in short supply so it won't last long.

Boulder County

Odd13 Brewing (Lafayette) - Halloween doesn't have to end on October 31st. At Odd13 they're extending it out to Friday, November 1st with their Halloween Party featuring two costume contests: Best Overall Costume and Best Dressed Like an Odd13 Beer Character. 2 prizes per contest awarded including tickets to the Vail Beer Fest in January and Free Beer for a Year. They'll also have a food truck on sit from "Gotta Rub It BBQ". Also, stop in this Friday and listen to live music with your beer from Watersong.

BRU Handbuilt Ales & Eats (Boulder) - Bring the kids to BRU on Halloween night for Trick or Treat. Adults with their kids will get a free 1st pint and the kids will get free treats. And $3 house pints for everyone else in costume.

Twisted Pine Co (Boulder) - [PRESS RELEASE] Twisted Pine Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado has announced the appointment of Jean Lund as Chief Executive Officer, effective November 1st. Current CEO and owner Bob Baile will retain the title of President and focus the bulk of his efforts toward customer and distributor relations. Lund spent the last two years as President and CEO of CordenPharma Colorado, based in Boulder. Baile and Lund first met there in 1978 while working side by side in the lab as research chemists when the company was known as Arapahoe Chemicals. Baile expresses excitement at having “a person of Jean’s caliber join Twisted Pine,” adding that “someone with her keen business acumen can bring a lot to the table and really help shepherd this company through the future.”
    On the subject of transitioning from pharmaceuticals to beer and how her past experience will translate to continued and increased success for Twisted Pine, Lund states that “the pharmaceutical business and the brewing industry are both technically challenging and require strict quality controls, while constant innovation is needed to be able to keep up with rapidly changing and expanding markets.” Acknowledging that there is more to a successful craft brewery than manufacturing alone, Baile adds that Lund “is completely in tune with Twisted Pine’s philosophy in regards to staff dedication and community interaction,” something the brewery has always prided itself on. Having worked and lived in the community for over 35 years, Lund understands the significance, asserting that “it is also very important for Boulder companies to be socially responsible and foster a strong relationship with the local community. Twisted Pine has been positively impacting the community for years through their great support of many charitable causes, and this culture will continue.”

J Wells Brewery (Boulder) - Don't forget that J Wells will be releasing their new "Hop Haze" beer at a release party at the brewery on Friday, October 25th starting at 5pm. There will be food on site available from the heirloom food truck as well. Then on Saturday, stop in and try the new collaboration beer with Gro├čen Bart Brewery - a coconut brown ale. Food that day will be available from Jessie's Smokin NOLA.

Sanitas Brewing (Boulder) - Today Sanitas will release Train Beer #2. The second installment in their rotating series of session beers, #2 is described as "light-bodied and crisp with subtle citrus and herbal notes from Cascade hops". As always, this beer is on special when the train goes by.

Very Nice Brewing Co (Nederland) - Stop in Thursday night for Open Mic Night at 7:30pm. Then, get ready for Very Nice Brewing's One Year Anniversary on Saturday, October 26th. Join in for door prizes, beer giveaways, and live music to help them celebrate! They'll be tapping their anniversary beer, the Phunkin' Monster - a monster of a Belgium! Starting at 3:00 p.m. they'll be giving away 10 ounce pours of that til a six-er is gone. Music from Caribou Mountain Collective starts at 6:00 p.m. Very Nice Brewing wants to thank everyone for making their 1st year a success.

Northern Colorado

Broken Plow Brewery (Greeley) - More progress. The framing is done and drywall underway at the brewery. The owners did some painting recently and plan more today. The brewery floor goes down soon and their giant patio might be completed this week! Lighting has been ordered and their building sign has been approved. The owners say the work can be overwhelming at times, but it's coming together! Coming soon to: 4731 W. 10th Street in Greeley, CO.

Pitchers Brewery (Ft. Collins) - This Saturday for their Halloween celebration, the brewery will be featuring drink specials and a Halloween Costume Contest. Get pints of their Blonde ale for just $2.50 and $7 pitchers from 8pm to 10pm. Wear your best costume for a chance to win either a $50, $75 or $100 bar tab.

Big Beaver Brewing (Loveland) - Starting this Saturday and daily through November 1st, Big Beaver is celebrating their 3rd Year Anniversary with a new beer tapping each day. Each beer will only be on tap for just 1 day and have a very limited 5 gallon batch with the exception of Oktoberfest and Buzzed Beaver which will stick around. Here's the release line-up: Oct 26 - Oktoberfest & Wasabi Wheat, Oct 27 - Vanilla Chai Stout, Oct 28 - Pink Peppercorn Belgian Ale, Oct 29 - Cocoa Mate Scottish Ale, Oct 30 - Juniper Pale Ale, Oct 31 - Apricot Belgian Ale, and Nov 1 - Buzzed Beaver Espresso Bourbon Stout.

New Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins) - As a fun way to introduce their new "Accumulation White IPA" winter seasonal beer, New Belgium has come up with a new online game where you can accumulate points towards chances to win prizes. Check out the press release issued today to find out how you can enjoy this new beer and get points while you're online.

Funkwerks (Ft. Collins) - If you happen to be in Greeley, CO this Friday, October 22nd from 4-6pm - stop in at Coral Bay Wine and Spirits for a free Funkwerks sampling. They will be pouring samples of their flagship Saison and for a limited time receive a free Funkwerks tulip glass with the purchase of a 750ml Funkwerks bomber.

Southern Front Range

Rock Bottom (Colorado Springs) - Today they are tapping their Pumpkin Harvest ale at 6pm to support Sweet Dreams of Colorado. Stop in for a pint and a bite tonight.

Mountains and West

Steamworks Brewing Co (Durango) - [PRESS RELEASE] – With this season’s abundant apple crop, it seemed a natural for Steamworks Brewing Co. to develop a firkin recipe using this plentiful fruit. To that end, the brewpub will roll out an “Apple Pie” Firkin as part of Firkin Friday, its monthly showcase of unique hand-crafted beers. The keg will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013. “This brew is mostly fermented raw apple cider combined with a small amount of wheat beer, as well as cinnamon sticks and brown sugar,” said Steamworks Brew Master and Certified Cicerone® Ken Martin. “The firkin should simulate an autumn classic, apple pie. It should be a real delight.” Steamworks initiated its Firkin Fridays to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons, and augment its regular, award-winning offerings. Steamworks, open 11 a.m. to closing seven days a week, is located at 801 E. Second. Ave., Durango, CO.

J Fargos Micro Brewery (Cortez) - Tonight they are featuring $1.50 micro brews and $1.00 macro brews. Need another reason to stop in? They also have a great food menu too.
