In January, the new beer festival year begins in Colorado and starts off big up in the Vail Valley with the annual Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival. Denver also has a large popular semi-annual beer festival with the Winter Brew Fest. There are lots of tap takeovers, beer dinners, firkin tappings, brewery anniversaries, music events and even some outdoor ice climbing - all with beer tents and fun activities.

Ullr Fest celebrates 51 years this Jan. 5-11, 2014 and Breckenridge invites snow lovers of all ages to join the party. During Ullr Fest in Breckenridge, don’t be surprised to see horned Viking hats adorning the heads of skiers and snowboarders, Ullympic competitors flinging frying pans for prizes, more than 12,000 Ullr enthusiasts filling the streets for the Ullr Parade and crazy float participants skiing off jumps on Main Street or gliding along town in a hot tub. Join in to rejoice with Ullr himself. Ullr is 51 – and is ready for a good party. In Norse mythology Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) was the winter god. Ullr loved the cold, and delighted in traveling over the country on his skis or skates. He also delighted in the chase, and pursued his game through the Northern Forests. Plenty of beer to be found around town with this festival.

The Ouray Ice Festival, held each year in January in Ouray, CO, is an eclectic gathering of ice climbers, gear manufacturers, and ice climbing enthusiasts. The international Festival was first held in January 1996 and now is widely recognized as the premier event of its kind. Each year, familiar faces return to climb, socialize, test out the latest equipment, and watch the pros power their way up the latest competition route. For the past eighteen years the Ouray Ice Festival has been the world’s premier ice climbing event. This annual gathering is attended by ice climbers from around the world, as well as industry sponsors, inspiring speakers, and the world’s top exhibition climbers. Festival events are held in and around the Ouray Ice Park, located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, as well as various other venues around town. The event is staffed by the Park’s board of directors, its professional staff, and a cadre of over 200 dedicated volunteers. The festival is the primary fundraiser for Park maintenance and operations. The industry leaders that sponsor the festival not only support the Park itself, but also gain access to a passionate audience of over 3,000 outdoor enthusiasts. Boulder’s Sanitas Brewing Company is hard at work preparing for the second event in their series of local food truck competitions. This cook-off will highlight five local food trucks (Heirloom, McDevitt Taco Supply, Bumper Crop, Cheese Louise, and Verde) that have been challenged to create their most unique and delicious chili(s). Event attendees can sample everyone’s offerings, ranging from mild to spicy and vegan to meat lover, and then vote for their favorite chili. Cans of Sanitas Brewing Company’s Saison and Black IPA are included with admission and bluegrass group Moonshiner will be providing the tunes for this family friendly event. Tickets can be purchased at Sanitas Brewing Company’s Tap Room. The majority of the event will be hosted inside, away from the cold, with additional dishes from each truck available in the brewery parking lot.

Now spanning two days! The Winter Brew Fest celebrates craft beverages from around Colorado and other U.S. craft brews and features live music from Trout Steak Revival (Friday) and Under a Blood Red Sky (Saturday), food, and other vendors. Over 52 breweries set for Friday and over 35 breweries on Saturday. Some different breweries will pour on different days so if you go both days you'll get brews you didn't get at the other session. Now in its 36th year! A long time ago back in 1979 the Land of Durango was covered in winter's darkness and the People and Commerce were depressed. A great lament was heard throughout the Land, as the days were short and bore little fruit. And so it came to pass one dark day The Founder John Murrah, heard this hue and cry. He enjoined the Lords of Business and the Lords of Information Dissemination that a winter celebration would bring Enterprise to the land and raise up the people in their time of need. Then the Founder said to the people, "Let there be FUN!" And SNOWDOWN was established as a winter Fun celebration. This year's theme is "Safari So Good".
