Colorado Beer News 073113

Colorado Beer NewsToday is GABF Ticket Day. It's the one and only day General Public tickets are on sale for the annual Great American Beer Festival. If you didn't get tickets by now they are already sold out. For those of you who managed to get tickets within the first 30 minutes after 10:00 AM congratulations! While tickets are now being sold on the secondary market for 2 to 3 times higher than face value - don't give in to temptation. There will be dozens of other events happening during GABF week. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Wednesday, July 31st, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Metro Denver

GABF Tickets (Denver) - Once again, tickets sold out in lightning fast time today for the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. The Brewers Association came out with this statement about tickets being sold on the secondary market: "Hi Everyone. We’re reading your comments, and we hear your frustration about scalpers and the secondary market. We share those concerns and wish there was a feasible fix. Unfortunately, there’s no perfect way to successfully avoid a secondary market for hot tickets—whether for popular concerts, sporting events or festivals like the GABF. There are measures in place to decrease access for scalpers, including ticket limits we set for GABF ticket purchases (enforced by Ticketmaster), and Ticketmaster’s anti-bot and other security measures. Does this prevent scalper access? No, but it does decrease it. We will continue to evaluate options and solutions going forward." - The GABF isn't going to be the only event in town that week. Check out the story about Denver Beer Fest happening October 4-12, 2013.

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - If it's Wednesday, it must be a firkin Wednesday at Copper Kettle. Today's firkin is a Prickly Pear Cactus Kolsch. Stop in after 3pm for a glass.

AC Golden (Golden) - AC Golden's Colorado Native lager is celebrating Colorado's 137th birthday on August 1st with a huge statewide toast, led by Governor John Hickenlooper, Pete Coors and Glenn Knippenberg, president of AC Golden Brewing Company. The toast will occur during the 7th inning of the Colorado Rockies game as a televised spot on ROOT Sports Network on August 1. The toast is part of a monthlong promotional effort that includes social media, on-premise promotions and off-premise POS in conjunction with Colorado Proud Month, which celebrates products made in Colorado, with Colorado ingredients. Bars around the state will participate by tuning into the game and encouraging patrons to join in the toast with a Colorado Native. (Email newsletter)

Elk Mountain Brewing (Parker) - Today's firkin is a Cherry Stout. You know you want one.

Boulder County

Left Hand Brewing (Longmont) - National IPA Day is coming tomorrow, August 1st and Left Hand is loving their hops. To celebrate #IPADay, Left Hand is giving away FREE tasters of the 400 Pound Monkey IPA on Thursday to all tasting room guests (21+ naturally). They will also offer $2.50 pints of 400# Monkey IPA both on draft and cask conditioned. Plan to stop in and embrace the hops!

Wild Woods Brewery (Boulder) - New beer release - Coffee ESB - an extra special bitter featuring a light roasted coffee from Conscious Coffees in Boulder. It's described as "smooth with subtle notes of caramel". Stats: 5.6% ABV and 42 IBU.

Upslope Brewing Co (Boulder) - Celebrate #IPADay tomorrow at Upslope's new Flatiron Park tap room. They'll have 9 unique IPAs on tap, including 5 specialty single dry-hopped versions of their Imperial IPA. In addition, they'll be serving their usual tap room offerings and hosting a food truck and live music to help you celebrate the night away. Heirloom Food Truck will arrive at 5pm. Boulder-based band, The Longest Day of the Year, takes the stage at 6 pm to turn up the celebration with their "whiskey-country-rock". Plan to stop in!

Northern Colorado

New Belgium PumpkickNew Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins) - It's the last day of July, so naturally it's time for Fall seasonals to start coming out right? Pumpkins are still ripening on the vines in the fields, but that isn't stopping New Belgium from releasing their new Fall seasonal called Pumpkick - an ale brew with pumpkin and cranberry juice. Look for this beer in 12oz 6-packs on store shelves very soon. This brew is not the same as their Lips of Faith brew called Kick, rather this beer has not been aged in oak, nor soured, rather is has some tartness from the cranberry juice added. You'll also find some cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and a bit of lemongrass in there as well. Does it feel like pumpkin beer time to you yet? Or is it too early?

1933 Brewing Company (Ft. Collins) - Progress is slowly being made at this upcoming brewery. They've been meeting with the city, selected a bar top for the tasting room, and unloaded their new 10x20 walk in cooler. Stay tuned here for more updates on when this brewery will open.

Patrick's Irish Pub (Greeley) - Ever wonder what a whiskey made from the same ingredients as a world class beer would taste like? Patrick's will be offering a side by side comparison of Rogue's Dead Guy Ale Whiskey and Beer - a small shot and a 1/2 pint for $5. That makes it only $4 from 4-7 during happy hour. Also, for you Brett-heads, they've got Crooked Stave beer on tap too! (Patrick's Irish Pub is a sponsor of Fermentedly Challenged)

High Hops Brewery (Windsor) - Today's Wednesday Firkin is: Kiwitty - a Wit beer infused with Kiwi, Blackberry and Cherry. It taps at 5:00pm. Then tomorrow for #IPADay, High Hops will have 8 different IPA's including the to-be-released Dr. Pat's #8. Compare Dr. Pats #3 through #8 side-by-side as well as a few new hoppy brews from their beer scientists. Don't forget Live Music Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Come say "Hi" to High Hops at the Gnarly Barley Brew Fest this Saturday too. (High Hops is a sponsor of Fermentedly Challenged)

Southern Front Range

Smiling Toad Brewery (Colorado Springs) - The smiling toad says: "Money cannot buy happiness, but it can buy beer." Come over and try a pint of happiness. Currently on tap Bella Lavender, Toad Lick IPA, Honey Basil, Belgian Farmhouse, Uptail Scotch Ale and our Rhino favorite Jumbe Porter. 10% of all Jumbe Porter is donated to help save rhinos in the wild.

Mountains and West

New Belgium releases several beers for Fall

New Belgium new releasesIt may only be the end of July, but New Belgium isn't waiting to release some of their new beers for the Fall season. In addition to their upcoming "Pumpkick" beer, there will be additions to their Lips of Faith and Hop Kitchen beers as well. The following is a press release detailing 3 new brews that will hit stores soon.

New Belgium's Newest Lips of Faith and Hop Kitchen Releases Now Available in Select Markets

French Aramis, Yuzu Berliner Weisse and Coconut Curry Hefeweizen Salute the Onset of Fall

Ft. Collins, Colo., July 31, 2013 – New Belgium Brewing offers up three new bold and beautiful beers available now through Fall with its Lips of Faith and Hop Kitchen portfolios. From the boundary-defying Lips of Faith series come two new selections: Yuzu Berliner Weisse and Coconut Curry Hefeweizen; French Aramis is the latest release in the Hop Kitchen line-up.

Yuzu is an imperial Berliner Weisse ale with yuzu juice. Yuzu, a citrusy and bold fruit, is paired with sour Berliner Weiss to create this unique beer. It’s brewed with pale malt and wheat and acidified with Lacto Bacillus, delivering a light, dry mouthfeel and tart, tropical refreshment. Yuzu is 8% ABV.

Coconut Curry Hefeweizen has been popular among home brewers for years, including the legendary Charlie Papazian and the 2010 National Homebrewer Remi Bonnart, who helped bring this latest selection to life. The aroma is big and bold, offering coconut and curry tones alongside a hint of banana from the hefe yeast. The vast spice list carries a bit of heat, including cinnamon, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, kaffir lime and cayenne pepper, but the alcohol soothes the finish. ABV is 8%.

The latest in New Belgium’s Hop Kitchen series, French Aramis is a drier IPA, brewed with Aramis hops to create an aroma of fresh cut flowers and garden herbs. ABV is 6.7% and 74 IBUs. This is the second of four Hop Kitchen brews, distributed in 22-ounce bottles and on draft in select markets.

“The newest Lips of Faith selections are chock-full of confident and exciting flavors that epitomize the series’ ability to push boundaries,” said New Belgium Assistant Brewmaster, Grady Hull. “Our Hop Kitchen beers embrace the hoppier side of things and the dry-hopping in the French Aramis gives it a nice tea leaf type quality.”

Denver Beer Fest extends GABF week October 4-12, 2013

Denver Beer Fest 2013Didn't get tickets to the GABF this year? Not to worry. There's going to be plenty of other beer related events planned for the week of October 4-12, 2013. Visit Denver - The Convention & Visitors Bureau has released a statement outlining how they can help you get into the spirit of the big beer festival with Denver Beer Fest.

Denver Beer Fest To The Rescue!
Citywide Celebration Of All Things Beer Takes Place October 4-12, 2013

DENVER, CO – July 31, 2013 – Tickets for the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), Oct. 10-12, 2013, the “Super Bowl of Beer,” went on sale to the public today. And, as usual, they sold out in minutes.

But don’t start crying in your beer just yet. The Great American Beer Festival is just the beginning – the foam on top of the beer glass – as there will be more than 150 other beer related events in Denver open to the public that week when VISIT DENVER presents the fifth annual Denver Beer Fest, October 4-12, 2013.

This nine-day, citywide celebration of all things beer includes rare beer tastings, beer-paired dinners, “brewer vs. brewer” nights, tap takeovers, brewery tours, firkin tappings and a variety of entertaining beer events, all making Denver the center of the known beer universe during early October.

Specific events are still to come, but the website, DenverBeerFest.com, will be a one-stop shop for everything to do with the festival, and also includes information about local Denver brewers and brewery tours. Bookmark it!

Denver brews more beer than any other American city and is home to Coors Brewery – the largest single brewing site in the world. More than 200 named beers are produced and served every day in Denver’s tap houses, brew pubs, breweries, and gastro pubs, with new pubs opening every week including Crooked Stave, Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew, Epic Brewing, Black Shirt Brewery, Black Sky Brewery, and many more.

Growing side-by-side with beer brewing is Denver’s distillery scene. Fifteen years ago, there was not a single distillery in Colorado – today there are more than 40 producing whiskey, brandy, vodka, gin and rum. And Denver also has wineries, with Infinite Monkey Theorem in the hip new neighborhood of RiNo gaining a national reputation for their sparkling wine served in cans.

Be sure to follow VISIT DENVER on Facebook for opportunities to win Great American Beer Festival tickets, airfare to Denver during the festival, guided beer tours and much more in the months leading up to Denver Beer Fest 2013.

Colorado Beer News 072913

Colorado Beer NewsToday is NASA Founding Day. Back on this date in 1958, the US government established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in an effort to counter recent moves by the Soviet Union to launch a space program. 55 years later, NASA is still active although now more restricted in missions due to budget cuts. Think we'll ever go back to the moon or perhaps even go to Mars? Time will tell. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Monday, July 29th, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Celebrate #IPADay on Thursday, August 1st, 2013! Grab an IPA and toast!

Metro Denver

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - July was Fruit Beer Cask Month and coming up in August will be Barrel Aged Cask Month. Each Wednesday at 3pm in August, Copper Kettle will tap a new cask of a barrel aged brew. Tastes include: Tequila Barrel Lime Agave Pale Ale, Tequila Barrel Aged Mexican Chocolate Stout, Barrel Aged Barleywine, and Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. Casks are in limited quantity so get there as soon after 3pm as possible on Wednesdays to ensure getting a pour. Check out their entire release schedule here. Also look for a new beer release every Saturday in August as well.

Parry's Pizza (Greenwood Village) - On Saturday, August 10th Ska Brewing Company of Durango, Colorado will bring an impressive list of rare beers from their very own collection. This tap takeover will be the first for Ska Brewing at Parry’s Pizza, but is sure not to be the last. Parry’s will be tapping Oak Aged Orange Cream Stout, True Blonde Dubbel, Pocket Protector Vanilla Porter, Modus Hoperandi and Chocolate Mint Stout. There may be others being tapped on the day of the event. This event is open to the public and there is absolutely no cover. (Parry's Pizza is a sponsor of Fermentedly Challenged)

Blue Spruce Brewing (Centennial) - There's a new brewery headed for the Centennial / Highlands Ranch area this fall called Blue Spruce Brewing. They've got a location picked out at: 4151 E. County Line Road, Unit G in Centennial, CO. Rick Kane is going to be the brewmaster. Check out their Facebook page or visit their website at: www.bluesprucebrewing.com.

Great American Beer Festival (Denver) - GABF Tickets go on sale THIS WEEK! And if you recall last year's lightning fast sell-out, this year is sure to be another record sell out. AHA Members can buy tickets on Tuesday, July 30th at 10:00am Mountain Time. General Admission (non-member) tickets go on sale on Wednesday, July 31st at 10:00am Mountain Time. Even if you get online right at 10:00am there is no guarantee that you'll get tickets this year as the TicketMaster servers will be bombarded with buyers and all tickets will most likely disappear within 30 minutes. Scalpers and other online ticket sites snatched up a lot of these tickets and sold these at 2 to 3 times face value last year. Don't cater to those sites if you get shut out as that only encourages more scalpers for the next year. Are you ready to shell out $80+ face value for a ticket this year? Visit www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com for info on tickets.

Elk Mountain Brewing (Parker) - According to Elk Mountain's Facebook page, there will be free food being served this Tuesday, July 30th at Elk Mountain Brewing. NOLA's will be serving up Salisbury Steak, Potatoes, and veggies. Bring the Family and enjoy a delicious meal as a THANK YOU from Jesse's NOLA. Don't forget to buy a beer to help wash that meal down.

Lone Tree Brewing (Lone Tree) - A reminder that today is Growler Monday at Lone Tree Brewing. Get $3 off a 64oz LTBC growler and $1 off their half-growler all day long. Look for Sports Trivia to start NEXT Monday with the Mile High Music Patrol.

Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery (Denver) - Jagged Mountain just wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign and raised over $25,670 dollars towards opening their brewery. There were at least 121 generous people who donated that helped push them over their $25,000 goal during the last day or so of the campaign. Now they will push ahead and use that money to help open the business later this year.

Boulder County

Oskar Blues (Longmont) - Remember those all-female brewer collaboration beers made earlier this year? Well, the ladies are planning another brew and this time it will be brewed at Oskar Blues in Lyons, CO on Sunday, August 11th. It'll be a 10 barrel batch of an extra pale ale with low IBUs and focusing on the flavors and aromas of a couple of New Zealand hops (Motueka and Wakatu probably). It looks like the participants will be Lauren from Oskar Blues, Ashleigh from Prost, Bess and Kayla from Wynkoop, Kim from Boulder Beer, Leslie from Bootstrap and perhaps a few other ladies. Look for this beer to be tapped in late August.

Also, thanks in part to their new North Carolina brewery, Oskar Blues had a 38% depletion growth through mid-year 2013. Check out their article about it.

Left Hand Brewing (Longmont) - As the calendar prepares to turn to August, Left Hand Brewing has been busy bottling this year's batch of Oktoberfest Marzen Lager. Ska Brewing (Durango) - Coming next Monday, August 5th, Ska Brewing will unveil a new restaurant on site at Ska World HQ - it's called The Container Restaurant and was fabricated out of 2 huge shipping containers. Recently, the Zia Taqueria moved to a new location in Bodo Park and could no longer feed Ska customers on site, and so became a need that had to be filled at Ska. Matt Vincent, Ska co-founder and Vice-President, has had his eye on using shipping containers since before the World Headquarters was built in 2008. “Maybe because our old location had such limited space, we were always fascinated with the idea of creating more usable space with shipping containers,” said Vincent. “The idea of being able to repurpose things fits with our focus on sustainability. We already have solar tubes to light the warehouse, recycled denim for insulation, former bowling lanes for tables… creating a restaurant space by repurposing shipping containers was another way to reduce our footprint. And it’ll look badass.”

Colorado Beer NewsToday is Hot Fudge Sundae Day. Nothing beats ice cream on a hot summer day, especially when it's made into a sundae and dripped with hot fudge. Mmmm. Station 26 Brewing Company (Denver) - Speaking of new breweries, Justin Baccary let it be known that Station 26 Brewing Company is planning to open a brewery in the Park Hill / Stapleton area at 7045 E. 38th Avenue in Denver, CO 80207 - just off I-70 and Quebec. The plan is to open sometime in October 2013 and brew on a 15 barrel system. Check them out on Facebook and Twitter. The brewery will be located inside the old Fire Department Station 26.

Big Choice Brewing (Broomfield) - Their brewers have been busy over the course of the past month moving stuff around in the brewhouse to make room for a new 30 bbl fermenter and brite tank. They are hoping to begin using them in August. Have you tried their Biere De Garde? If you missed it, Zach just brewed another batch last week and it should be back on sometime in August. They'll also be offering Colorado wines and cheeses, and gluten free snacks to enjoy in the tasting room. They plan to only be open on Saturdays from 12pm to 10pm. Look for them to open at the end of next week and visit them at: 2707 W. Eisenhower Blvd Unit 3 in Loveland, CO. Also Like them on Facebook.

New Belgium (Fort Collins) - It may seem odd that New Belgium has not distributed beer to all of their next door neighboring states until now. New Belgium has announced that they have signed an agreement with eight distribution partners in Utah and will begin shipping there later this summer. Fat Tire will launch first initially with more to come. Bout time the border to Utah was opened to New Belgium!

Steamworks Brewing (Durango) - [Press Release] Firkin Fridays continues at Steamworks Brewing Co. with the monthly “firkin” tapping Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, featuring a special West Elk IPA. The cask will be tapped at 3 p.m. For the West Elk IPA, Steamworks Brew Master and Certified Cicerone® Ken Martin has taken the brewery’s popular Conductor Imperial IPA and kicked it up a notch. “Our Conductor, which is our most heavily hopped beer, has already had its normal dry hopping, but in the firkin we dry hopped it again with whole cone nugget hops from West Elk Hop Farms in Paonia, Colo.,” said Martin, explaining that West Elk is an organic hop farm, and Steamworks has been experimenting with some of its crops. “This secondary hopping with these whole cone hops that are in their natural form – but have been kiln dried straight off the vine – will give the already piney, spicy and resinous Conductor even more of the same character but with a unique freshness.”

Colorado Beer News 072313

Colorado Beer NewsToday is Mosquito Day. It's a day to pay respect to this winged pest and to remind everyone that here in Colorado the mosquito is known to carry the West Nile virus. Don't forget to put on some insect repellent before you head outdoors in areas that mosquitos are in abundance. Some studies have shown that drinking a beer increases your chances of getting bit by mosquitoes. There's something in the chemistry of beer that attracts them. Also, did you know that the mosquito is considered by many to be the real state "bird" of Minnesota? Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Over the last year, Pug Ryan’s has increased capacity and quality of brewing, garnered an incredible amount of local and regional publicity, driven demand beyond supply and raised money for the craft beer culture in Colorado. In May of 2012 they completed an expansion, adding three new 45 BBL fermenters and two 45 BBL serving tanks, more than doubling their capacity and allowing them to focus much more on seasonal specialty beers.
