Goose Island Lolita 2011 review

Goose Island Lolita 2011Labor Day weekend is a good time to try new beers, and in this case I got to try a two year old bottle of Goose Island Lolita (2011) - billed as a wine-barrel aged Belgian-style Pale Ale fermented with wild yeast and aged on raspberries. I was given this bottle directly from the brewery as a free promotional sample and I was thankful to be able to review it on the blog.

Goose Island Lolita (2011) came in a tall 22oz capped bottle with a bright white label. The bottling date and year were clearly visible on the bottle. This brew was packaged back in November 2011 so it had nearly 2 years of age by the time I sampled it. This beer weighed in at a hefty 9% ABV and 32 IBU. Goose Island brewed this with 2-row and caramel malts plus added some sugar for extra yeast food. They hopped this with Super Styrian, Styrian Goldings, and Saaz hops.

Not sure how long this brew had been in a wine barrel with raspberries, but seeing how this was essentially a wild fermentation, I was expecting some tartness, sourness and funk. Goose Island suggests pairing this beer with salads or white fish, or also perhaps some pork or chicken dishes. Soft cheeses are also recommended. Goose Island also states that this beer can age well up to 5 years in the bottle. Seeing how I can't wait another 3 years, 2 years will have to do.

Appearance: Goose Island Lolita poured out a reddish orange color with a tiny white fizzy head. The head did not last long at all, perhaps 10 seconds at most. Swirling the beer did not bring up any head and there wasn't any lacing to speak of. The beer itself was very clear without any traces of sediment in it or the bottle. The beer still seemed to have adequate carbonation, but the lack of head raised my eyebrows a bit.

Aroma: Just as soon as the bottle opened I could smell the wild fermentation and raspberries. The aroma also was big with the scent of an aged wine as well - a tad musty. I knew I was in for a soured session with this beer. The funk and barrel notes seemed to dominate the raspberry. A very curious smelling beer, that's for sure.

Lolita close-upTaste: The first sip seemed to attack my mouth with a sour tartness and nearly dried out the inside walls and back of the tongue. The brew had a distinctive wine barrel flavor highlight. The dryness hit me up front and lingered long after the sip was down. There was just a hint of raspberry in the flavor, but the wild yeast and barrel characteristics took over right away. This beer had a medium mouthfeel and had plenty of carbonation in the mouthfeel.

I was expecting perhaps a bit more sweetness and Belgian-style from this beer. It was nearly harshly tart and I nearly coughed from the vapors while swirling it around in my mouth. My mouth felt so dry after several sips that I just had to pair this beer with something moist. I tried some sweet raisins initially and that really helps cut the dryness of this beer tremendously.

Granted, I'm a big sour beer lover, but this beer gave me an experience I hadn't seen before in a wild ale. Just the acidity of this beer and dryness really forced me to drink this beer very slowly. I kept wondering how this beer would change throughout the sampling. While I got used to the power of this beer, I still was left feeling that this beer could have had a bit less tartness to it.

Overall: I can't help but wonder how a 2013 bottle would compare to the 2011. According to one popular beer ranking site, the 2011 batch so far is the best batch of the 4 years they've made this beer. Hmm, if this was the best year then perhaps the 2012 and 2013 brews needed more age to mellow.

I ended up finishing all but a few ounces of this bottle and then I didn't want any more. This beer is good in smaller sample sizes, perhaps up to 6oz to 8oz is fine. I would highly suggest that this beer be paired with food, because all by itself this beer will dry out your mouth and leave you wanting something to counter that. The overall taste was fine, but I somehow would not put this up as one of my favorite wild ales. Perhaps it reminded me too much of a dry wine. I think this beer would be better with more raspberries and a little less time in the barrel.

Disclosure: This bottle was sent to me direction from Goose Island Brewing Company in Chicago as a promotional sample. I was not paid for this review.

Branch Out Cider is a business led by Aaron Fodge and Matt Fater. They are currently selling their 8.4% ABV apple wine called Perennial at select stores and bars around town. You can find them at Wilbur's Total Beverage and places like The Mayor of Old Town. This makes the 2nd cidery behind Scrumpy's that opened earlier. Apples are taken from trees found in backyards in Northern Colorado and mixed with honey and then fermented into a powerful beverage. Check them out on Facebook or on their Website.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse (Loveland) - Don't forget, today Grimm Bros is tapping their "Dragon Slayer" - a smoked German beer based off of an Oktoberfest recipe. It's back for a limited run. And yes, growlers of this brew are available too!

Owner Peter Villeneuve just signed a lease on a property at 245 S. Madison Avenue in Loveland, the former Loveland Food share building. They plan to take about six month to get that brewing facility ready for business. They will retain their West Eisenhower tasting room however. Hard cider is taking off in NoCo!

Southern Front Range

Bristol Brewing (Colorado Springs) - Now in bomber bottles! Their English-style Old Ale is now available in bottles at their Pub in the Springs. Drink some and you'll believe in unicorns too. Great Divide Brewing Co (Denver) - According to a report from Jonathan Shikes at Westword, Great Divide is tentatively considering building a bigger brewery in the Denver RiNo district that could potentially allow them to expand capacity to over 250,000 barrels annually. They've expanded multiple times at their current facility in Denver, but to keep growing as expected, they'll need to get a bigger place. Should the decision come soon to expand, they may be eyeing a property along Brighton Boulevard between 33rd and 35th avenues. Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout review

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout 2012What do you get when you brew a double strength stout with some Intelligentsia La Tortuga coffee beans and Willamette hops? Heaven in a glass. Goose Island Beer Company of Chicago, Illinois brews a series of Bourbon County Brand stouts and releases a unique coffee version each year around November with a different brand of coffee bean. This review is of their 2012 edition of Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout.

I had the pleasure of sampling this a couple of times earlier this year at the Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival in Vail, CO last January and it was one of my favorites from that fest. I was already a big fan of their Bourbon County Brand Stout, but with the addition of coffee, this brew becomes something totally different and unique. Goose Island was kind enough to send me a full bottle of the 2012 edition of this beer made with coffee beans from the Caribbean for me to review and I could hardly wait to revisit this beer.

Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout is a monster of a double stout. It weighs a hefty 14.3% ABV and a big 60 IBU. It only comes in 22oz bottles (or on draft if you are lucky to find it). This beer is brewed at the original Goose Island brewery in Chicago, Illinois. Despite the fact that this company is now part of the AB-InBev family, this beer should still be considered to be brewed by a craft brewer. True, AB-InBev here in Colorado makes some of the Goose Island beers here locally which may not be considered "craft", but this one is still brewed only at their original Chicago craft facility and is considered one of their best beers. Goose Island states that this beer will mature very well up to 5 years after bottling.

Appearance: Goose Island Bourbon County Brand (BCB) Coffee Stout poured out thick and nearly black with a small dark brown head. The head seemed to be fizzy sounding, and it disappeared fairly quickly. The brew was so dark that even along the edges it still remained very dark. Swirling the beer in the snifter glass left little lacing, but raised a small head back up easily once again. For a stout, BCB Coffee Stout was about as dark a beer as you can find. There seemed to be some liveliness in this beer from the carbonation, a bit odd for a double stout.

Aroma: Here is where BCB Coffee Stout really shined. In a word: Heavenly. It's one of the richest aromas in a beer I've ever smelled. Normally, when I sniff a dark stout I get lots of dark roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. Here I got that plus a whole lot more. The coffee aroma was an eye opener. There were also whiffs of chocolate and perhaps a bit of dark fruit in the nose. It's the type of scent that I could smell again and again and never get tired of. The aroma intensifies as it slowly warms. Do yourself a favor and let this beer breathe and warm up a bit. Sure, you'll also notice a hit of alcohol in the nose too, but the coffee, chocolate, toffee and roast in this beer far outweighs the higher ABV. Yes, there is a bit of hop in the nose too, but it takes a back seat. This beer was meant to be sampled from a snifter glass and swirled. Only fill the snifter about 1/3rd full and it's nearly perfect.

Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout close-upTaste: Oh yes! Very few beers make me fall in love from the first sip, but this is one of them. This is a big, rich, thick and chewy stout. It has a big coffee taste, but is not acidic like some coffee beers can be. There is an underlying chocolate sweetness about it as well that in my opinion makes this beer outstanding. Yes, you can definitely tell there is alcohol in this brew, so tread slowly. This beer had a big thick and creamy mouthfeel too.

At some point, I was briefly reminded of the complexity of a Sam Adams Utopias, but at half the alcohol. Once a beer gets beyond a certain ABV level it begins to take on a different feel. Other imperial stouts fall way short of being complex and tasty, but Goose Island seemed to add so much more to this. The coffee really makes this beer so much more flavorful without being dry or acidic. As this beer warms the flavors become more intense. Don't drink this cold right out of the fridge, rather, let it warm and the flavors really start coming out.

Overall: Awesome! But a word of caution - this 22oz bottle was made for sharing. If you attempt to finish an entire bottle by yourself you will get seriously tipsy. You've been warned! Share this one and savor it in 4-6 oz quantities for best enjoyment. Even consider pairing this with a rich dessert or even over ice cream. Consider using a snifter glass and sip this one slowly. It's well worth slowing down for as you'll want to savor each sip. If you spy a bottle or two of this beer grab them both quickly as you'll want one for now and one for aging. Even though I sampled this beer in the heat of summer it was wonderful. I can imagine that this beer in the winter would be even better as a warmer. If Goose Island is remembered for one thing, it'll be their Bourbon County Brand stout series. One of the best beers around and for you stout lovers - this is high up on the list.

Disclosure: This bottle was sent to me directly from Goose Island Brewing Company as a complimentary promotional sample. I was not paid to do an endorsement, rather an open opinion of this beer.

Colorado Beer News 082613

Colorado Beer NewsToday is Krakatoa Day. On this date, 130 years ago in 1883, the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa erupted, or rather blew up with the biggest explosion in the modern era. The noise was so loud it was heard over 3,000 miles away. So much debris was hurled into the atmosphere that it affected the Earth's atmosphere for many years. Let's hope that type of event won't happen again for a long time. P.S. - for you dog lovers - it's also National Dog Day. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Monday, August 26th, 2013. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Metro Denver

Hops & Pie (Denver) - September's Firkin 1st Friday is coming up on September 6th at 6pm. This month, Hops & Pie is featuring a firkin from Oskar Blues - Black IPA - dry hopped with their own farm-grown hops (Centennial, Mt. Hood and Nugget). The brew weighs in at 8% ABV and 70 IBUs.

Copper Kettle Brewing (Denver) - For the last August Barrel Aged Cask firkin of the month, Copper Kettle will tap a "Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout" this Wednesday, August 28th at 3:00pm. They saved one of the best for last.

Crooked Stave (Denver) - Jonathan Shikes from Westword wrote an awesome article today about the fact that since many breweries got shut out of GABF this year, Chad Yakobson decided to host a big festival for those brewery who got left behind. Crooked Stave will be hosting "What the Funk?!" on Friday, October 11th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. So for those of you who didn't get a Friday GABF ticket either, this will probably be THEE place to be for alternative celebrations. This fest will feature beers from about 30 breweries, including breweries who put out some pretty amazing rare beers. The event will take place at the Sherman Street Event Center. Tickets are $80, about the same as you'd pay for a GABF session with fees attached.

Lone Tree Brewing (Lone Tree) - Had your nitro fix lately? Lone Tree Brewing has their Acres 'O' Green Irish Red now on the nitro tap. Get some frothy foam in your beard or mustache, or simply some on your bare upper lip!

Boulder County

Oskar Blues (Longmont) - According to their blog: Oskar Blues is "about half done harvesting hops and it is going great. Thanks to our friends at Hop Acres in Fort Collins we are using a Wolf Picker this year to harvest our cones. Our brewers have been using fresh green hops the day we harvest and dried hops as soon as they come out of the dryer. Amazing flavors and aromas in the limited release brews. Be sure and stop by the Tasty Weasel Tap Room and taste for yourself. The fresh hopped Dales Pale Ale with Hops and Heifers Willamette’s is my recommendation! The garden this year has produced fresh veggies for the chefs to use; right now we are harvesting Okra! Our Berkshire pork program is up and running we had 6 baby berks this summer and they are growing up fast." - Embrace the fresh hops during hop picking season while you can.

Upslope Brewing (Boulder) - Recently they announced that they brewed some Pro-Am beer for the #GABF with homebrewer Derek Ordway of the Liquid Poets Society (Ft. Collins). Their Oatmeal Stout that they brewed is ready, and if you want a chance to taste that brew before the judges do, then stop down at the Flatiron Park tap room and get a taste!

Northern Colorado

New Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins) - If change is considered a constant in life, then New Belgium is rolling along making plenty of them. And one of the changes they are considering making with with their beer labels. Some of the recent TTB label approvals have shown a new look for a couple of New Belgium beers. For instance, their New Belgium Trippel is getting rid of the two-tone generic label and going full color - with roosters too! Plus, the staple Fat Tire is also getting a slightly new look as well. Check out the approved labels. No telling when they might just show up on store shelves. Do you like the new look?

Odell Brewing (Ft. Collins) - There's a new between seasonals beer that's coming out from Odell Brewing and you might just get to see it a couple of times a year. It's called Runoff Red IPA - a beer meant form "shoulder season" when travel and tourism is at their lowest - typically in the Spring and Fall. This brew will be available in 12oz bottles and draft. No word on availability yet, but expect it soon. The beer is described as: "With a complex malt backbone dry hopped for notes of citrus and pine and an alpenglow-red hue, it's as surprising as the season itself.

Crabtree Brewing (Greeley) - There's a full 10 beers on tap this week and they're waiting for you to get a pint or a growler full. Beers include: Head Turner Blonde, Dearfield Ale, Berliner Kinder, Box Car Brown, Rebel Rye I.P.A., Serenity Amber, Trichome, Buck's 80, Oatmeal Stout and an Apricot Cezanne Saison. Gotta love variety!

Glenwood Canyon Brewpub (Glenwood Springs) - New Seasonal Beer Special - On tap now is their Rio Grande Trail Double Pale Ale. It's brewed with a massive quantity of malt and American variety hops. It was also dry-hopped for 3 weeks. Suggested Pairing: Applewood Planked Salmon and/or a Black n' Blue Wedge Salad. Stop in and try it! They've also got in their new stainless steel Traveling Growlers. Take home 64oz of your favorite Glenwood Canyon Brewpub beer.
