Branch Out Cider Perennial 2012 review

Branch Out Cider Perennial 2012 Hard CiderColorado isn't yet known for being a big hard cider producer as apple trees are not the product of choice for local farmers. Still, due to the growing popularity of hard ciders, Colorado has attracted several new hard cider companies over the last several years. One such cider maker is Branch Out Cider of Fort Collins, Colorado. They began offering their first edition of hard cider in the Spring of 2013. One unique quality about this hard cider maker is that they don't grow their own apples, rather they rely on the local Northern Colorado community for providing them with all of the apples from trees all grown locally. Today, I'm reviewing their first commercial product: Branch Out Cider Perennial 2012.

Perennial 2012 comes in a big 750ml capped bottle. This edition was made with apples from the 2012 harvest. All apples, of many varieties, came from backyard trees of friends and neighbors and friends of friends who collected and saved their extra apples and combined them into a mixed variety batch of apples that were crushed and juiced and then fermented into hard cider.

Branch Out Cider then added a bit of honey and melon into the fermented cider to slightly sweeten and bottle condition Perennial 2012. The result is a hard cider that was aged during the Winter and released during the Spring of 2013. Perennial 2012 weighed in at a hefty 8.4% ABV. As with most hard ciders, the producer adds sulfites to help balance the PH levels in the beverage.

Appearance: The bottle opened with a noticeable big hiss. Perennial 2012 poured out a bright golden yellow color with a large amount of bubbles. There was a good 1+ inch head of bubbles that stayed in the glass for a minute or so thanks to the champagne yeast they must have used. That's not common in most hard ciders, but this one had an abundance of carbonation in it and lent itself to maintain a bright white head long enough to photograph and take in. The beverage itself appeared to have exceptional clarity. Just a few barely noticeable particulates were seen to be floating in the cider. I chose to use a tall but narrow glass that I normally use for porters for this tasting in order to show off the color more visibly.

Aroma: There was a strong nose of apples to be found here, but I struggled to find a trace of the honey and melon in the air. There was a crispness to this scent and the mix of several different apple varieties were evident from taking in several deep whiffs. Initially, I smelled this around 50 degrees F, but later put the rest away in the fridge for finishing later. Smelled even colder seemed to change the aroma into something even more aromatic. There was just a hint of sulfur in this cider, but not enough to make my nose twitch. As the sampling went on, I could start to pick up a bit more of a fruity bouquet, perhaps that came from the melon.

Taste and Feel: The first sip had bubbles dancing on my tongue. No getting around the carbonation on this which turned out to be rather sparkling. The hard cider was on the dry side as I expected, but there was an underlying touch of sweetness still present. The taste reminded me of some local apples I've eaten, particularly the flavor I get from the apple peel - perhaps the tannins left there for body. This hard cider was not watery at all, it had a big apple flavor, but apple with little sweetness left. It wasn't tart either, nor had any trace of vinegar either. The best way to describe this hard cider was dry and chewy. It tasted better on the cold side I thought. My first sampling was warmer and I decided to put the rest in the fridge to cool it down a bit - and I'm glad I did.

Perennial 2012 up closeOverall: Compared to all of the other commercial ciders I've tried, Branch Out Cider's Perennial 2012 felt more like an apple champagne than an easy going sweeter session cider. This was cider I wanted to sample and savor slowly. There wasn't nearly as much sugars added back to this brand and that led to slower drinking. I chose to pair this cider with my Thanksgiving turkey and I'm glad I did.

Perennial 2012 is not the kind of cider I'd go out and buy for everyday drinking. No, it's more the kind of alcoholic beverage that I'd suggest for use with some fine dining. The price is steeper than most hard ciders, so you'll not want (or be able to) buy a lot of it. This brand was made in small quantities and if you find some around Northern Colorado consider yourself lucky as it isn't widely distributed in the state. I had to ask Branch Out Cider if they could get some delivered to Greeley and they almost immediately sent some out to a local store. (Thanks!)

Savor this hard cider slowly and enjoy the complex apple taste, the lively carbonation, and the hefty kick you'll get from this drink. A single 750ml bottle was enough for 3 people to enjoy. Try this if you want something different to pair with your finer meals.

Disclosure: I paid full retail price for this beer at my local liquor store. For a 750ml bottle, the retail price was $14.99. Pricier than most hard ciders, but this is a small batch made but once a year and targeted for finer dining.

Lone Tree Brewing Company Mission Statement

Like most of the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Denver Metro area was filled with breweries, watering holes, and the occasional beer garden. These were gathering places for the local neighborhoods where people could relax after a hard day of work, meet friends and family for an evening of music, rich conversation, celebrations, discussions on their favorite team, or simply to find a quiet corner and enjoy a book. Lone Tree Brewing Company’s mission is to revive this tradition and create a neighborhood gathering place where everyone feels right at home.

Today they’ll be offering a Thanksgiving growler special: $10 growler fills of all their beers. Diebolt Brewing won’t be open on Thanksgiving because they need to spend a little quality time with family. Also, New Hours! From now on they will be open every Wednesday from 4-10pm.

River North Avarice 2013River North Brewery (Denver) - [PRESS RELEASE] At River North Brewery, the first week in December is always circled on the calendar. It’s when the brewery releases one of its most revered beers – the one the brewers look forward to all year. This year’s vintage of Barrel-Aged Avarice will debut Saturday, December 7th at 1pm! For 2013, the River North brewers blended Avarice aged in a number of different whiskey barrels, some of which have held the Belgian-style Imperial Stout for 14 months. The result is a decadent and opaque brew which melds the robust dryness of the base beer with smooth, sweet notes of whiskey and oak. “I’ve sometimes wondered how long this beer would age in the bottle,” said Founder and Head Brewer Matt Hess. “Several years would be a safe bet, but I honestly would not be surprised if it tasted even better in a decade.” In total, the brewery will release 105 cases of individually numbered bombers. The lowest numbered bottles will be sold in the taproom, with the beer on tap for the release party as well. More cases will land on store shelves around Colorado the following week. Matt and Jessica Hess opened the award-winning River North Brewery in February 2012. Brewing in the RiNo district of Denver, Matt focuses on Belgian styles and American styles with a Belgian twist, with an emphasis on barrel-aging. Follow the brewery on Facebook (facebook.com/rivernorthbrewery) or Twitter/Instagram (@rivernorthbrew) for the latest insights.

Colorado Homebrew Supply (Online/Denver metro) - Colorado Homebrew Supply is a new on-line retail site for homebrewers and wine makers that is run by the local homebrew shop Castle Rock Homebrew Supply. They launched their online site at www.coloradohomebrewsupply.com to better serve their customers that can not make it in to the store on a regular basis. Some of their customers drive in from Pueblo or even Craig and they've shipped as far as Pennsylvania. This is a way to ship direct to them as well as expand their customer base nationally in a user friendly format. They decided on a different brand and web site because both types of customers need different services. Their local web site is designed around discussing local in store events and classes. Colorado Homebrew Supply's web site is designed around ease of shopping from a computer or tablet. They feel their small store focus will be augmented by an internet retail presence allowing them to carry a larger array of fresh ingredients which both customer types can enjoy. And most importantly, more fresh choices lead to better beers by the 1000s of brewers they serve. (A new sponsor on Fermentedly Challenged)

Rockyard Brewing Co (Castle Rock) - The brewery has recent installed a new BrauKon brewing system and they've brewed up their first batch of beer on the system. Here's a time-lapse video showing it off. You can also view the video on YouTube.

Black Shirt Brewing Co (Denver) - While you are running around picking up last-minute Thanksgiving provisions, be sure and grab a growler or two of Red Ale. Our Mutual Friend Malt & BrewWith so many breweries opening these days, so too are breweries celebrating anniversaries. One Denver-based brewery - Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew in Denver, Colorado is celebrating their 1st anniversary next weekend and are planning to throw a two-day party in honor of the occasion. Check out their Press Release and see what's being planned for the anniversary.

[PRESS RELEASE] Denver, CO. -- November 22, 2013 -- Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew is excited to announce the celebration of their First Anniversary on December 6th & 7th, 2013 at the taproom located at 2810 Larimer st. in the RiNo neighborhood of Denver, CO.

The last year at OMF has seen a leap in production capacity from their hand built one barrel brew system to a four barrel commercial brewhouse and seven barrel fermenters. The taproom has served 6 year-round standards, 4 seasonals, 2 bottle releases (Winter Warmer & IPA2), and countless one off batches. Each release has helped refine and improve the processes and quality of the beer. Their crafting and use of 100% Colorado grown, house roasted specialty malts shine through the beer more than ever, and they are working with Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa, CO to build and install malting equipment that will further allow OMF to take more of the grain to glass process in house. They hope to install and implement this equipment in 2014.

To celebrate the first year, Our Mutual Friend will host two days of festivities at the brewery:

OMF 1st Anniversary WeekendFriday December 6

At 7 PM OMF will tap the second release of Winter Warmer, a beautifully complex 10% abv Old Ale. This crowd favorite has notes of fruit, dark chocolate, roastiness, toffee, & black currant. The standard recipe Winter Warmer will be pouring, as well as two limited batches of the same: Winter Warmer on oak and cherries & Winter Warmer on Madagascar Vanilla and Novo Coffee.

Musical guests and Denver locals Flashbulb Fires, A Mouthful of Thunder, and Confluence will perform in the brewhouse.

Food Truck “The Special” will provide their delicious vegan/vegetarian fare, a new concept from the great people who brought you Waffleganger.

Saturday, December 7

To mark the birth date of OMF, all seven members of the OMF team created a personal recipe for a Staff Tap Takeover. OMF will tap 10 gallon batches of each style beginning at 7 PM. The list includes a Black IPA, All Galaxy Hop Red ale, Blood Orange Wheat ale, Dubbel, Hoppy Saison, Cream Ale, and a NY Maple Syrup Porter. Tasters and full pours will be available.

Musical guests and Denver locals the Pickers, Two Tone Wolf Pack, and Josh Dillard will perform in the brewhouse.

Food Truck Baba’s Falafel will provide their fantastic Middle Eastern fare.

Elevation Beer Company to Expand into Texas

Elevation Beer CompanyDreaming big has never been a problem for the owners of Elevation Beer Company. A brewery less than two years old has already built a reputation for making solid beers and is now preparing to expand distribution to another state. Here is their press release issued earlier this week outlining their plans for putting Elevation beers into the Lone Star state.

[PRESS RELEASE] November 20th, 2013 Poncha Springs, Colorado - Elevation Beer Company and Favorite Brands LLC of Dallas, Texas are teaming up to bring Elevation’s Black and Double Black Series of specialty and barrel aged beers to Texas.

“We are extremely excited to bring our beers to the great state of Texas.’ Says Elevation Co-founder and Sales Generalissimo Xandy Bustamante. 'Texas has a great community of craft brewers and craft-beer centric retailers and restaurants and we are excited to bring our beers down to Texas’ thirsty craft beer fans.”

Favorite Brands will start distributing limited amounts of Elevation’s seasonal Black and Double Black Series in 750ml bottles and draft to Dallas, Forth Worth, Austin, and Houston as soon as Elevation receives label approval. The first beers to roll out will include Elevation’s award-winning Apis IV; their Downpour a fresh hop Extra IPA; and Fanboy, a virgin oak-aged double IPA.

“The Favorite Brands team is absolutely geeked out, and excited to start our partnership with Elevation Beer Company. They know their beer, from a great Berliner Weisse, to my personal favorite, their Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, Oil Man.” Says Greg LaMantia, Jr, owner of Favorite Brands. “Truth be told I hope the words ‘limited amounts’, turns out to be short lived as we expect them to be well received and in high demand. When you get good beer, and good brands you want to run with it, and Elevation has plenty of both.”

Elevation Beer Company crew

Texas will be Elevation’s first out of state market since opening in May of 2012 in Poncha Springs, Colorado. In less than 18 months of operation, Elevation has won 6 medals for excellence and has 5 beers rated 90+ on the consumer beer rating website ratebeer.com.

Elevation will kick off its launch in Texas with a series of beer tastings and events, so make sure and check out their website and Facebook page for more information and exact dates and times.

Snapshot, an unfiltered wheat beer with a citrusy nose, a sweet malt profile and a flash of tart across the finish, will roll into all New Belgium markets in February, 2014. “This has been a fascinating process,” said New Belgium Brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. “We are actually blending two beers here – one that is traditionally fermented and one that undergoes a lactobacillus fermentation which creates a subtle tartness. By blending the two, we smooth out the tart and create a very refreshing and sessionable wheat beer.” Brewed with wheat and pale malt, Snapshot pours a hazy, lemon-yellow with bright white lacing. The beer opens with a citrus note from Target hops, coriander and grains of paradise, then gives way to malty smoothness and a refreshing tart snap at the finish. Snapshot will be available year-round in 12-oz bottles and cans, 22-oz bottles, and draft throughout New Belgium’s area of distribution. Steamworks Brewing Co (Durango) - It won’t be a literal train wreck, but the special firkin christened “Train Wreck,” to be tapped Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Steamworks Brewing Co.’s Firkin Friday is likely to pack a significant punch. The “Train Wreck” keg will be tapped at 3pm as part of Steamworks’ monthly showcase of unique hand-crafted beers. “We’ve had a staff favorite we called ‘Train Smoke,’ which is a 50-50 blend of our Conductor Imperial IPA, and the Backside Stout, and the bartenders blend it from the taps,” said Steamworks Brew Master and Certified Cicerone® Ken Martin. “We just thought we’d save them the trouble and do the blending ourselves as a cask-conditioned beer, a firkin. We think it will be kicked up a notch, thus ‘Train Wreck.’” The resulting flavor of blending the Conductor and Backside Stout will be an aggressively hopped ale with the roasted coffee and chocolate characteristics typical of a stout. According to Martin, it will closely resemble an increasingly popular, emerging style in the craft brewing industry called a Black IPA. In addition to the potent flavor, the Train Wreck’s base beers pack a punch with the ABV (alcohol by volume) weighing it at 8.7 for the Conductor and 6.4 for the Backside Stout.

Ska Brewing (Durango) - Alas, poor Ten Pin Porter. We knew ye well. On Friday, November 29th at Ska HQ, they will be hosting a "Day of Mourning" as they retire their longtime beer recipe for Ten Pin Porter after a long run since 1996. A memorial for the delicious craft beer will be held at Ska Brewing World Headquarters on Black Friday. Dark beers and black merchandise will be 20% off. The Container Restaurant will be preparing a black bean Ten Pin Chili with jalapeno-cheddar cornbread and peach honey butter. Open casket memorial all day 9am to 8pm.

Zephyr Brewing Company uses CrowdBrewed to Raise Funds

Zephyr Brewing Company - Denver, COComing up with the capital to open a brewery isn't easy. Just ask any one of the nearly 200 breweries in Colorado. Newcomer brewery - Zephyr Brewing Company is planning to open in the near future in Colorado and is looking for some extra funding to finish off what plans they've already put into place. Public funding isn't always successful, but for the clever and business savvy entrepreneurs, fundraising can be a great way to show what you're made of before you open the door. Check out their press release from today and check them out and see if you might be interested in helping them out. The rewards look interesting.

Zephyr Brewing Company is a new brewery opening in Denver, CO in early 2014. They are using CrowdBrewed to help raise funds by offering unique rewards to craft beer enthusiasts.

Zephyr Brewing Company is the newest local brewery to join the craft beer neighborhood in the RiNo district of Denver, CO. They are owned and operated by true Colorado natives. Brian Wood, Tyler Shuey and Rich Wisniewski are childhood friends, with a “Colorado Proud” attitude that is a driving theme behind their brews. Brian and Tyler (engineers educated at the University of Colorado and long-time homebrewers) will be heading up the brewing operations, while Rich (a bar manager and former 5280 "Top of the Town Readers’ Choice" Bartender) will be running the front of the house.

Zephyr Brewing Company is utilizing the CrowdBrewed website to launch their campaign. https://crowdbrewed.com/rewards/ is a donation / reward crowdfunding platform for craft brewers and industry affiliates who want to raise money for their breweries, to add new beers to their catalog, pitch a product and to spread the word to the “crowd”.

Through strategic marketing and offering great rewards, crowdfunding has become one of the most successful avenues to raise money and attention for up and coming breweries. In fact, CrowdBrewed broke records with previous campaigns, raising double the intended amount for J Wakefield Brewing Company at nearly $112,000. CrowdBrewed is optimistic that Zephyr Brewing Company will receive the same public excitement for their brewing dreams.

Their anticipated taproom will carry eight taps of delicious Zephyr Brewing Company beers, enough to satisfy even the thirstiest craft beer lover. Their unique beers will indulge every palette. Their regular tap will carry a Scottish Ale, a Denver Milk Stout, a Belgian Style Wheat and an IPA. The additional four taps will be for specialty and rotating taps that will feature Chili Beers, Fruit Beers and Imperial Styles.

Zephyr Brewing Company has raised the bar as far as crowdfunding rewards go as well. With a contribution of $20, they are offering a Zephyr pint glass, a sticker, a magnet, and a free pint. For $300, a campaign contributor will enjoy all of that plus a limited edition t-shirt and a free pint of beer everyday for an entire year. Larger contributors have the option to have their very own beer on tap in Denver, as the buyer and a friend can join Zephyr Brewing Company on a brew day to participate in a 7 barrel brew! Beer enthusiasts better get ready.

When Zephyr Brewing Company opens their doors, they will be sharing the neighborhood with Epic Brewing Company, River North Brewery, and Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew. RiNo is rapidly becoming the hub for Denver Breweries providing craft beer lovers with so much variety.

For more information, check out the Zephyr Brewing Company Campaign Page on CrowdBrewed,

Left Hand Wake Up Dead Nitro Russian Imperial Stout review

Left Hand Wake Up Dead Nitro Russian Imperial StoutWonder what all the hype is about Nitro? Left Hand Brewing Company of Longmont, Colorado has embraced nitrogen in three of it's beers and has come up with a way to infuse it right into a standard 12oz beer bottle. This brew is their new (2013) Left Hand Wake Up Dead Nitro Russian Imperial Stout. It comes in a handy 4-pack and can be found wherever Left Hand beers are sold.

About two years ago, Left Hand Brewing Company came out with Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout and I was an instant fan. I was already familiar with their regular Wake Up Dead Imperial Stout. With the addition of Nitrogen right in the bottle (a patented process they have), Left Hand brings the taste of a nitrogen tap into your home without the need for expensive equipment.

From what I understand, the recipe for the Nitro version was basically the same as their regular version. The beer weighs in at 10.2% ABV and 45 IBUs and a hefty 306 calories. It uses Pale 2-row, Munich, Crystal, Chocolate, Roasted Barley and Flaked Oats in the grain mix. It's generously bittered with Magnum and US Goldings hops. With the addition of Nitrogen, this beer takes on an entirely new characteristic worth noting. Let's dive into this beer shall we?

Appearance: The bottle cap told me to "Keep Cold * Pour Hard", so that's exactly what I did. I chose a standard 16oz pint glass, popped the cap and turned the bottle completely upside down and let it pour hard into the glass. I've found no matter how hard you pour into a 16oz glass, the foam and beer will stay in the glass without foaming over. The nitrogen in this beer caused a spectacular cascading sheeting effect. Just watching the layers of bubbles dancing around was worth the price for this beer. When the cascading effect died down, the brew was left with a perfect 1.5 inch creamy and frothy tan head that stuck around for the entire tasting. The beer poured black as night, as expected. As I drank this down the lacing from this beer clung tightly to the side of the glass. Visually, this was an amazing beer to behold.

Aroma: The downside of using a standard pint glass for this beer was that I lost a lot of the aroma capturing capability that other glasses (like a snifter) can help bring out. I let the beer sit out for several minutes in order to help bring out the full aroma. If you try to get the aroma when it's still cold you end up missing a lot. Once warmed a bit, I could pick up a lot of roasted malts, some chocolate, licorice, coffee and perhaps some dark fruit in the nose. The nitrogen didn't add anything to the aroma however. The smell of this beer was very inviting, so already, visually and aromatically, this beer had a lot going for it already.

Left Hand Nitro beersTaste: The first thing that hit my mouth was the cream smooth froth at the top of the glass. Blending the foam and the beer gave this beer a great mouthfeel - creamy and smooth. The brew had a pleasant roasty taste with a noticeable kick. Definitely picked up much of the same flavors as I detected in the aroma. Some chocolate, dark licorice, molasses with a twang, a roast like coffee and a hint of sweetness. This beer was slightly dry and left a nice coating on my tongue. The flavor palette with this Nitro Russian Imperial Stout was huge.

I liked the taste of this beer even better than their normal Wake Up Dead and it's because of what the perceived difference with the nitro was. While the nitro did nothing for the taste, it did change the mouthfeel considerable and that makes a definite difference.

Overall: I absolutely love what nitrogen does for a beer like this. Just to watch it in the glass, the constant thick, creamy head and smooth texture can't be beat. This beer definitely had some alcohol heat in it. It's best to slow sip this beer. Let it warm up and you'll get the full experience and aroma. I was impressed with this beer and will definitely enjoy having Wake Up Dead Nitro again. The cream head lasted all the way to the very end and still had some left in the glass. Now if only they would barrel age this beer it would be even better!

video

Disclosure: I paid full retail price for this beer at my local liquor store.
