Colorado Beer NewsToday is Science Fiction Day. Spend a day enjoying stories, shows or movies of your favorite Sci-Fi genre today. Whether it be Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who, Firefly, or something way out there - do something that will help you imagine your future today. After all, the future won't become the future unless you start working on it today. I suppose you can always dream up the next futuristic craft beer while you're enjoying your next beer. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Thursday, January 2nd, 2014. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Metro Denver

Saint Patrick's Brewing Co (Englewood) - Got Pong? Not beer pong, but Ping Pong! This Saturday, January 4th starting at 3pm they will be hosting a taproom ping pong tournament. Top finishers will receive Saint Patrick's swag. Open from 2pm to 9pm that day. Also that Saturday, they will be releasing their Centennial State Lager, a Czech style lager that's highly sessionable.

Kokopelli Beer Co (Westminster) - T-minus 8 days and counting. Their Grand Opening is set for Friday, January 10th at 2pm. Their business is located at 8931 Harlan Street in Westminster, CO. Be sure to come hungry and thirsty!

Black Shirt Brewing Co (Denver) - The day has finally arrived! Today they started canning their beer for the first time. First up is their Red Porter. Look for it soon in a can near you Denver!


Boulder County

Crystal Springs Brewing (Louisville) - The brewery will be releasing the 4th, and last, in their Black Saddle Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout series on January 14th - on tap and in 22 oz bottles. In February they will have all four Black Saddle versions in their single cask series bourbon barrel aged stouts on tap, along with regular Black Saddle and two other stouts (right now slated to be a ginger stout and a chocolate stout). Towards the end of January they plan to release a cherry lambic. Also, visit them at their booth at the Big Beers Festival in Vail January 9-11th.

Twisted Pine Brewing (Boulder) - The spirit of the giving season continues at Twisted Pine this month. If you bring in 3 cans of food to donate to EFAAneeds, then Twisted Pine will give you a free pint. They've got a lot of beer to give away and a large donation barrel to fill - so please don't stop giving just because the holidays are over.

West Flanders Brewing (Boulder) - Today at 5pm - Rosa Marie IPA will be tapped. As part of their new experimental series of beer, West Flanders is releasing a very limited quantity every Thursday. It will be different every week. This week, a Rosemary IPA that Brewer Brian loves. He has never used Rosemary before so this is a new exciting adventure, come try some.

Odd13 Brewing (Lafayette) - It's "Foos-and-Brews Thursday" at Odd13 tonight. The foosball tournament starts at 7pm and the winning team gets 4 free pints. No food truck tonight, but Pucinellas Pizzeria is a great delivery option. They offer 13 percent off when you order from Odd13. They'll be open from 3pm until 10pm tonight.

Fate Brewing Co (Boulder) - Fate just tapped their Foreign Extra Stout today. It's got lots of malty, roasty goodness built in and weighs 7.6% ABV. Enjoy!

Northern Colorado

Wiley Roots Brewing Co (Greeley) - A new special release is happening at the brewery on Wednesday, January 15th. Wiley Roots will tap their "Sweet Sassy Molassey", an India Brown Ale. The brewery opens at 4pm that day. Wing Shack will be on site at 5:30pm serving up great wings. Special small batch releases will also happen at 6:30pm. Stay and listen to live music from Patrick Atwater (folk jazz ensemble) from 7-10pm that night.

City Star Brewing (Berthoud) - A fan favorite is back on tap today. Chai Watchman, a spiced stout that weighs in around 6% and has cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom and chai tea and then aged on Madagascar vanilla beans. Then stick around for live music from Seth Phillips from 6pm to 9pm.

Verboten Brewing (Loveland) - Stop in today to watch the Sugar Bowl game on TV (Oklahoma vs Alabama). If you do, you'll get a crack at their free pizza while it lasts and can enjoy their $3.50 pint special on their "Nuclear A-poca-liss", a Cascadian Dale Ale (aka Black IPA). Also, mark your calendars now for Verboten's 1st Anniversary celebration on January 31st and February 1st. They are planning to release 10 barrel aged beers for their anniversary plus doing a 22oz bottle release for their Killer Boots Caramel Porter. Details on Facebook soon.

Equinox Brewing (Ft. Collins) - Today at noon, Equinox tapped their first firkin on 2014. Today their firkin is "Feats of Strength IPA" dry hopped with Amarillo hops. A fun way to celebrate the first week of 2014.

Patrick's Irish Pub (Greeley) - Start off 2014 with some great new beer tappings. Today's new tappings include: Prairie Artisan Ales 'Merica (Saison), Avery's The Maharaja Imperial IPA, Blown Spoke Hard Cider's Apple Semi-Dry, and Saint Arnold's Fancy Lawnmower (Kolsch). They've also got the Irish Session playing tonight around 7 pm and Odell Brewing's 5 Barrel Pale Ale is on special for just $2 today. 2014 is off to an incredible start at Patrick's!

Crabtree Brewing Co (Greeley) - Today is Thirsty Thursday and for a surprise tapping today they have some reserves of Chunkin Pumpkin back up on tap! Stop in and start off the New Year with a craft beer.

Funkwerks (Ft. Collins) - Taproom is back open regular hours today. Be sure to stop in this Saturday for the first beer release of the year - Brett Trois.

Big Thompson Brewery (Loveland) - Loveland's next new brewery will be Big Thompson Brewery. They recently ordered their new 10 barrel Direct Fire System for brewing from the Minnetonka Brewing and Equipment Company in Minnesota (Go USA equipment!). Expect to see them up and brewing and opening sometime this summer!

New Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins) - Their huge wooden foeder forest is growing! This week they are busy assembling and finishing more foeder vessels. This means more sour beer is coming in the future. Expect to get a close-up look at them at their "Lost in the Woods 2014" event in February. Here's a sneak peak from their Facebook page.

Grimm Brothers Brewhouse (Loveland) - UG CLUB MEMBERS: Grimm Brothers is collecting the 2013 mug engravings. You have till the end of Feb to get them your quote for your personal mug. For 2014 they are changing it up a bit. Instead of mugs at the end of the year they will make your mug up front and you can use it all year. Come in and re-new your membership soon.

Southern Front Range

Fossil Brewing Company (Colorado Springs) - A new brewery is targeted for opening in March 2014 in Colorado Springs, CO called Fossil Brewing Company. Founders: Josh + Colleen Bye, Katrina + Rich Benson, & Graham Clark will open a brewery at 2845 Ore Mill Road (Unit 1) this Springs. The name Fossil to them means: History, Community and Science. They are also trying to raise funds ($15K) for the brewery via a Kickstarter campaign that started today and ends on January 31st. Look for them on Facebook.

Mountains and West

Crazy Mountain Brewing Co (Edwards) - In just one week, Crazy Mountain will be turning 4 years old!! Join in at their tasting room on Friday, January 10th for a huge anniversary party to celebrate all of their successes. They will be doing complimentary glasses of beer at 12:00pm, 4pm and 6pm for celebration toasts! Live music and food by the Crazy Wagon too. There will be a raffle at 9pm to win a semi-private party at Crazy Mountain.

7 Hermits Brewing Co (Eagle) - Announcing their Mug Club Pre-Sale!
