Metro Denver

Colorado Plus Brewpub (Wheat Ridge) - We all know that beer and pizza go well together, but have you ever had a beer that tastes like pizza? Brewer Adam Draeger has come up with a brew that attempts just that. Stop in for a glass of their "421 Hawaiian Pizza" beer. Here's how they describe it: "I first decided that pizza is built on a foundation of crust, so I picked malts like Munich, Melanoiden and Biscuit to emulate this toasty crust. Next, I figured, I could put pineapple juice directly into the fermentor, since it worked so well with OJ on the Little OrangeHon Annie beer. Next I had to decide if I actually wanted to put Canadian bacon into my beer. Nah, instead I'll emulate it with some home-cold-smoked hickory malt (hickory smoke is the classic "bacon" smell). Lastly, I'll add some oregano in the boil to bring out the sauce flavor and aroma. The pineapple and hickory smoked malt perfectly balance each other. Personally, I think it was a bit high on the oregano, but most people enjoy it after the first sip sinks in and they've taken the 2nd or 3rd sips. 421 Hawaiian Pizza comes in at 7.8% and 30 IBUs. And where does the name come from? Well, we recently released the 420 Red Head, so we figured you'd probably have the munchies for some pizza after that beer. On tap now!"

West Flanders Brewing (Boulder) - [Newsletter] This Thursday at 5pm MST, West Flanders Brewing will pay off its losing Super Bowl bet with Seattle's famed Elysian Brewing, by tapping Boom! IPA. This new beer was brewed on their system by Elysian brewer Kevin Watson. Kevin describes the beer as "a full-on blitz of hop aromas." The beer was made with four kinds of hops from Washington and weighs in around 7% ABV, with about 45 IBUs. "It's got a massive hop bouquet," says WFB head brewer and co-founder Brian Lutz. "Kevin brought out a ton of Chinook, Citra, Mosaic and experimental hops and most of them went into the beer late in the brewing process. For an emphasis on aroma instead of bitterness." Their pal and Elysian co-founder David Buhler says the beer is a "super hoppy but super-quaffable northwest IPA that will go ‘boom!’ on your palate." Fortunately for them, David will be on hand at West Flanders for the tapping. Unfortunately for them, he will hang a Seattle Seahawks flag in West Flanders (ugh!) when the beer goes on tap. At the same time that Boom! goes on tap at West Flanders, Elysian will tap a version of the same beer at its three brewpub locations in Seattle. The Seahawks flag flies at WFB for two weeks or until Boom! is gone, whichever comes first. Seahawks and Broncos fans are invited to attend in their best team gear and Super Bowl Champion and AFC Champion gear. [1125 Pearl St, Boulder, CO]
