Colorado Beer News 061014

Today is Ball Point Pen Day. It was back on this date in 1943, some 71 years ago that two brothers, László and György Bíró, obtained a US Patent # 2,390,636 - which was better known as the ball point pen. The first ball point pens sold for as much as nearly $10 each. Today, the ball point pen is so cheap they are often given away as promotional items by businesses. If not for this invention, the world may have stuck with pen and quill for decades longer. These days, however, hand writing almost seems like a lost art as many of us communicate electronically and use our fingers for signing electronic documents and receipts. Cheers to the pen! Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Monday, June 10th, 2014. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

National News

US Tax and Trade Bureau (aka the TTB) - Great news for all breweries. The Feds, in particular the TTB, has just released a new list of brewing ingredients that will be exempt from being subject to formula requirements. These exemptions include some of the most commonly added ingredients to many craft beers and will no longer require brewers to provide formula paperwork to obtain label approvals. Some of these ingredients include: most fruits, spices like allspice, anise, pepper, peppercorns, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, cocoa powder (or nibs), coriander, ginger, nutmeg, orange or lemon peel, star anise and vanilla and other additives like brown sugar, candy sugar, chili peppers, chocolate, coffee, honey, maple sugar/syrup, molasses and lactose. Also if brewers aged beers in plain barrels or with plain woodchips, spirals or staves that's exampt too. For the complete list of ingredients, check out this TTB Ruling 2014-4.
