Colorado Beer NewsToday is the First Day of Fall, aka the Autumnal Equinox. Around 8:29pm MDT is the moment that fall begins today. So let's give a toast to the last few hours of Summer and welcome in the Fall. Already the leaves are changing up in the mountains and around the lower valleys and plains. It's time to put away those summertime beers and break open the Fall seasonals and slightly darker beers. Oktoberfest and Pumpkin beers are popular this time of year. There are still plenty of Oktoberfest celebrations happening around the state. Head to your favorite watering hole and enjoy! Metro Denver

Fiction Beer Co (Denver) - Over the weekend, Fiction Beer Company held a soft opening in preparation for their upcoming Grand Opening on Saturday, September 27th at 2pm. The brewery has a noticeable "book" theme, even their bar is created out of books. They plan to open with a full line-up of beers in The Classics, Mystery & Adventure, and Fantasy & Sci-Fi categories with names like: Vitality of Illusion Wit, Autumn Stars Belgian Farmhouse, The Dreamer IPA, Old Bums and Beat Cowboys Pale Ale, Feely Effects Stout and Are Red Heads Supernatural Seasonal Ale. They plan to offer their own 32oz growlers, but you are welcome to bring in your own growlers for filling too. Once open they will have business hours Wednesday through Sunday opening at 2pm each day and stay open til 10pm, 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Get ready for some great beer on Colfax! Blue Spruce Brewing (Centennial) - Yesterday, Blue Spruce Brewing tapped their Oktoberfest beer. They will be donating 50 cents from each pint sold to the Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of the fight of Hannes Spreigl, friend and father of their executive chef, who passes away last year from this cancer. Joyride Brewing Co (Edgewater) - For a limited time, Joyride Brewing has 4 beers on tap that showcase hops in different ways. They have their Cougar Pale Ale, Fresh Nugz Wet Hop Pale Ale, Edgewater IPA and Double IPA, which are all very different. Order a flight, and they'll also include their Scarecrow Pumpkin Ale and Bear Paw Oatmeal Milk Stout. Lake views are always complimentary. [2501 Sheridan Blvd, Edgewater, CO]

River North Brewery (Denver) - GABF Week is coming and River North is planning to be in several events. Mon. Sept. 29th evening - Look for River North beers at Falling Rock Tap House's GABF Kickoff party. Wed. Oct 1st 3pm - Wayward Wednesday features a horizontal tasting of their farmhouse ale finish four different ways. Thurs, Oct. 2nd - Cellar Sale! Get some rare bottles from the past year. Doors open at 1pm. Also, River North will be at Hyatt Rock the Dock mini-beer fest 3-5pm. Fri. Oct. 3rd 12-4pm - Look for River North at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting. And Sat. Oct. 4th 1-10pm - the taproom finale - Empty The Cellar Party. Brewers' choice rotating rare kegs all day. They saved the best for last. GABF Event Listings (Denver/Boulder) - Fermentedly Challenged's October 2014 Colorado Beer Festival & Events Calendar has been expanded with several more GABF events. Yak & Yeti Restaurant & Brewpub (Arvada) - Just tapped today - their "Oscuro Navidad Grand Cru", a Belgian-style ale with made-from-scratch dark Belgian Candi syrup. This is a big beer at 10.5% ABV and a modest 25 IBUs so it comes across as big and sweet with a strong Belgian-style character. This beer doesn't have any fruit added, but the yeast has converted many of the sugars to include some fruity esters. As the beer warms you can pick out different fruit flavors like grapes, plums and cherries. Come in to try one today. [7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada, CO]

Hops & Pie (Denver) - This Saturday, September 27th from noon to close is Hops & Pie's 4 Years of Pizza & Beer party. They'll be offering up a fantastic lineup of beers from Avery Brewing Company including: Bad Apple, The Beast, Chai Brown, 5 Monks, Gorde, Kaiser, Lilikoi, Oscuro/Minus, PumpKYn, Rufus Corvus, Uberschwine, and Uncle Jacobs Stout. Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project (Denver) - Their taproom is CLOSED today for an employee fun day. Sorry. They will re-open at noon tomorrow.

Boulder County

Odell Brewing Co (Ft. Collins) - Happy 25th Odell Brewing!!! Join Odell Brewing Company on Tuesday, September 23rd from 6-9pm as they celebrate their 25th anniversary in style. The event will include live music from the Phuong & Friends Jazz Combo, small plates prepared by The Kitchen, Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar, The Moot House, The Welsh Rabbit Cheese Shop, and Cafe Vino, and pairings of some of their rare, vintage, and Cellar Series offerings like Friek '10 and Avant PĂȘche. Loveland Oktoberfest (Loveland) - A big thanks to all who came out to the 2014 Loveland Oktoberfest this last weekend. The weather was perfect and so was the new location for this event - right behind the Thunder Mountain Harley Davidson complex. A great time was had by all. City Star Brewing (Berthoud) - Hope you didn't forget that today City Star tapped their Fresh Hop 6 Shooter today (September 22nd). It was made with fresh Colorado Cascade hops for a nice citrus and pine aroma and bitterness. [321 Mountain Ave, Berthoud, CO]

Bristol Brewing Co (Colorado Springs) - The great Pumpkin Ale has returned! The Venetucci Farm Pumpkin Ale pre-sale will begin on Sunday, September 28 from 12pm-6pm! All proceeds go to the farm! There is a 4-bottle limit per person. Everyone must place their own pre-order in person at the Pub (bring your ID). One order per person. Payment is due when you place your order. Paradox Beer Co (Woodland Park) - File this under the "Things to Look Forward To" category. An Extra Small Batch of 2014 "Kintucky Common", their SourMash Amber Aged in Breckenridge Bourbon Barrels, is getting master blended from choice barrels for bottling later this week. Red Leg Brewing Co (Colorado Springs) - Start your week off right with some craft beer, delicious food and some football action! They've got 2 limited release beers on right now, they will have the game on at 6:30pm, and they are very excited to host the newest addition to their food truck line up, Treehouse BBQ, who will now be joining them on Mondays! Animas Brewing Co (Durango) - The town of Durango is about to welcome their 6th brewery later this fall. Former head brewer of Durango Brewing Company - Scott Bickert - is looking to open at 1560 East 2nd Avenue in the old "For the Birds" building which just happens to be very near the Animas River Trail. Bickert is looking to attract families to his brew pub, ones who may just be getting off the trail. Plans are to open late fall. Look for word on an opening date in the near future. Ska Brewing Co (Durango) - Ska Brewing Company is headed back for another big GABF next week. And according to them, this year is going to be awesome yet again. Ska has some great events planned for this year including Beer Rep Karaoke and the Happy Hour Hub at the Curtis Hotel. Angry James Brewing Co (Silverthorne, CO) - The small mountain town of Silverthorne, Colorado is getting its own brewery in 2015! Angry James Brewing Company is co-owned by AJ and Darcy Brinckerhoff. They are planning to break ground on a new brewery in the early part of 2015. If all goes according to plan, they should be able to open their 7 bbl brewery by November 2015 with at least 6 brews on tap. Keep reading here at Fermentedly Challenged for news on their progress.
