Spiegelau's Stein Worthy of the Big Game

Spiegelau Refresh Beer SteinCelebrating the Big Game often calls for a big glass full of your favorite beer. Why reach for just any beer glass when you can get a glass made by one of the best beer glass makers in the world? I'm talking about the Spiegelau brand from Germany. Spiegelau's slogan is "The Class of Glass" and has over five centuries of glass-making experience. Now just in time for this year's Big Game, Spiegelau has come out with a new type of beer glass called the Refresh Beer Stein, a modern beer stein with a new twist.

This reviewer is no stranger to Spiegelau glassware. During the 2012 Beer Blogger's Conference in Indianapolis, I was introduced to a whole array of Spiegelau beer glasses and was amazed at what a their glass could do for the full experience of drinking a craft beer. Their glassware was built for not only drinking beer, but also to bring out all of the flavors, the aromas and to help show off the beer's true colors. There glassware was known for its beauty and thin glass. Up until then, Spiegelau hadn't featured a big, thick glass for craft beer drinking, let alone one with a handle.

Now flash forward to 2014, Spiegelau now has a new glass design with thicker walls and a more traditional stein shape. However, this glass also has gently tapered walls at the top to help enhance the aroma and bitterness. There is also molded vertical ridges along the inside of the glass as well as a "turbine" swirl design on the bottom of the glass to help sustain head retention and carbonation.

Since I was already a big fan of their thinner craft beer glasses, I was excited to hear that they had come out with a bigger, heftier glass meant for toasting and drinking your favorite beers.

The Refresh Beer Stein is built to hold 21.8oz of beer and is 7.5 inches tall. While you probably won't be putting an entire bomber bottle's worth of beer in this glass (afterall you want leave some room for the head), it will allow you to enjoy a full 16oz of beer with ample space for a big head of foam.

Spiegelau Refresh Beer Stein Notice the foam after half a beer

I chose an American Pale Ale to test this glass with. I opened a 12oz bottle and gave it an aggressive pour into the Refresh Beer Stein. I immediately saw the full golden color of this beer and watched a big 4-finger tall head of foam rise to the top of the glass. The head on this beer seemed to last and last for a long time. Even near the end of the serving, there was still a good 3/4" of foam in this beer at all times.

What was also interesting to watch was how much nucleation of the bubbles there was in this beer. The protruding inner side edges and "vortex" bottom of this glass seemed to bring out the bubbles in this beer, and especially when given a swirl. I knew for a fact that the beer I poured had been in the bottle for several months and wasn't over carbonated when it was opened.

After enjoying half of the beer, the foamy head was still present. I swirled the beer counter-clockwise in the stein and the head seemed to re-energise and rise up to about 1 inch or so. Typically, the head on a beer disappears except for a slight small ring of bubbles around the glass, but in the Spiegelau glass it remained a good 3/4" minimum through the entire serving. I don't normally like to agitate my beer that much, but if you want to get a bit more head back into your beer a quick swirl will do the trick.

Refresh Beer Stein inside The vortex at the bottom

Make no mistake, this beer glass is not a lightweight. With the thickness of this glass, just over an 1/8th of an inch, plus the inch thick solid base, it felt very robust in my hand. Thank goodness there is an ample sized handle on this stein glass. It's a slightly oversized handle and will fit hands of any size. My hands are fairly large, but it could easily accommodate a much bigger hand as well. Regular Spiegelau glassware is very thin and could break easily if you attempt to clink glasses, but this glass' walls are much thicker and should hold up well to a spirited toast when your favorite team scores a touchdown.

The beer I chose to drink was already rated with high marks, and in this glass it tasted fantastic, even after being stored in the bottle for several months. I could easily pick up all of the subtle aromas in this beer. There was plenty of space to trap all the rich scents of hops and malt. The glass also showed off the rich golden color of the beer really well.

Next, I tried a side-by-side comparison of the Spiegelau stein with a stein I had in my kitchen. My beer stein had even thicker glass, but was much shorter and had no tapered edges or inside edges to enhance nucleation. I poured full beers into each of them and did a comparison of appearance, aroma and taste.

Visually, the Spiegelau glass had more square inch glass exposure and the color of the beer stood out more. As for the aroma, I could definitely pick up even more hop and malt in the Spiegelau glass than in my regular stein. And the taste, wow there was a difference! The Spiegelau stein had a much more vibrant taste. The regular stein tasted a bit flat compared to the Spiegelau Refresh Stein. Glass does make a difference!

Spiegelau stein with packaging

The Spiegelau Refresh Beer Stein comes individually packaged and sells for $19.90 retail and is sold at finer liquor stores and glassware stores. It is dishwasher safe and has improved breakage resistance than their regular beer glasses. If you wish to find more information about the Spiegelau Refresh Beer Stein visit: www.spiegelauUSA.com.

The Pros: The Refresh Beer Stein definitely gets the advantage with the overall presentation and sensory experience with craft beer. The glass has great clarity. The handle is great and solid. The glass thickness is finally not too thin with a Spiegelau glass. The inside of the glass is quite unique with it's inner edges and swirling vortex bottom design. Despite the near $20 cost, I felt this glass would be well worth it.

The Cons: Granted, this is a tall glass and does carry some weight. I found myself needing to put the glass down often due to its weight when full. The only flaw I saw with this glass, at least with this particular glass, was that the bottom edge that touched my table wasn't perfectly flat and had a very slight shaved edge on one section. Other than that, I had no fear this glass would tip over, even with a noticeable nudge.

I plan to cheer on the Denver Broncos during the Big Game this Sunday with this Spiegelau Refresh Beer Stein. No matter the outcome of the game, I know that the beer I'm going to drink is going to taste its best in it.

Disclosure: I was sent a complimentary glass by Nike Communications, Inc of New York, NY. I was not paid for this article, but stated I would give an open opinion of this glassware.

[CO Beer Festivals] -- [Beer Dinners] -- [CO Beer Releases]

Metro Denver

Beer By Design Brewery (Northglenn) - Are you a stout lover? Stop in today as they are once again tapping their BBD Imperial Stout. It's a great way to start off your weekend early.

Hall Brewing Co (Parker) - Stop in today for their special firkin tapping. They've got a Raisin & Chili infused Harvest Farmhouse Ale. They warned us that it's got some bite to it - so be ready!

Our Mutual Friend Malt & Brew (Denver) - They've got their IPA3 back on tap today, plus they're tapping 5 gallons of Nitro Winter Warmer. A total of 10 different beers on tap today. Quiero Arepas will be out front tonight. Stop in before the snow hits.

Yak & Yeti TaphandlesYak & Yeti Brewpub (Arvada) - [PRESS RELEASE] Yak & Yeti Brewpub has rebranded it’s tap handles for 2014. The old handles were hand-made wooden “Y”-shaped handles to represent the double Y’s in the Yak and Yeti, but due to the recent deluge of new breweries a rebranding was becoming more necessary. When the Yak & Yeti debuted their wooden wye there were only a few breweries in Colorado that had natural wood-based tap handles, less than two years later there are around two dozen breweries that are marketing a similar look. The Yak & Yeti doesn't have a dedicated merchandise or branding manager so Adam Draeger (head brewer) takes on the responsibilities himself. “There are so many new breweries that are using beetle-kill wood or cnc routed/laser etched wood tap handles that I thought we should turn a different direction entirely,” says Draeger. The new handles are one-piece molded urethane-based with a glossy paint job. The yeti wears a sandwich signboard for labeling each individual beer. The Yak & Yeti partnered with Taphandles.com for the manufacture of the handles, the entire process took about three months with artist concepts, revisions, prototyping and production. The handles can be seen at both the Yak & Yeti Restaurant (8665 N Sheridan Blvd, Westminster), the Brewpub (7803 Ralston Rd, Arvada) and select tap houses in and around Denver. For those interested in purchasing one for your own collections the tap handles are retailing at the brewpub for $65 each (tax included).

Former Future Brewing Co (Denver) - As read on their Twitter feed, they stated that within a few hours they will know whether they will be able to open for business this weekend. They had a few issues with their final inspection yesterday. Fortunately, they stated they were easy things to fix. They are getting another final inspection today and will know very soon. Stay tuned! Former Future is located at: 1290 S. Broadway in Denver, CO. Check them out on Facebook or on the web at www.former-future.com.

Strange Brewing Co (Denver) - Remember that trademark lawsuit? Tomorrow they plan to make a major announcement regarding that settlement. In the meantime, stop in tonight for One Barrel Thursday. They're tapping a Raspberry Honey Tripel. A beer that was made using 15 pounds of Colorado raspberry honey. It's a powerful 8.9% ABV and 37 IBUs.

Mountain Toad Brewing (Golden) - Today's tadpole tap is S.M.A.S.H.- (single malt & single hop). It was brewed with 1 grain type and highlights the Calypso hop. It's light in body with a pear and tropical fruit profile and a crisp, dry finish.

Renegade Brewing Co (Denver) - Renegade welcomes back "Conspirator", a Coffee Milk Brown Ale. This brew weighs in at 6% ABV and 45 IBUs. Also available in 15.5 gal and 5 gal kegs. Open today 2pm to 10pm.

Arvada Beer Co (Arvada) - Tomorrow their gold medal winning American Style Barleywine will be released, but if you tell Kevin or Devo that you heard about it on the internets they will sell you a snifter or taster of it tonight. Happy Hour runs from 4pm to 7pm tonight.

River North Brewery (Denver) - There's just 5 gallons of Barrel-Aged Avarice on tap today in their taproom. It will go well with Pride of Philly Cheesesteaks on a snowy evening.

Boulder County

Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery (Boulder) - The Wait Is Over! This Saturday, they Release The Stouts! This February will be the 21st annual Stout Month at all four Mountain Sun locations: the Mountain Sun, Southern Sun and Under the Sun in Boulder, and the Vine Street Pub and Brewery in Denver. Now in its 21st year, Stout Month has become an anticipated event among local beer connoisseurs. During the month of February, most of Mountain Sun pubs’ taps will fade to black with local versions of the rich, thick and dark ale. This is a once-a-year opportunity to try some of the region’s best stouts, side-by-side, and on tap. The mega stout celebration will continue as long as supplies last.

Twelve Degree Brewing (Louisville) - There's a beer release today in the taproom. Now back on tap is their Brett Saison, a classic, dry Saison fermented with Brettanomyces. Coming up on Big Game Sunday (Feb 2nd) is their Batch 28 - Legal Nelson. It's a unique Belgian-style Golden Ale aroma hopped with Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand. They will be showing the game on their big HD screen and will have food and beer specials throughout the day. And look for their Pear Saison and Dubbel coming to a tap very soon. Today's taplist includes: Treachery - Golden Strong, TreaCherry - Golden Strong Ale with tart cherries, Soleil Saison, Walter's White, Brabant Tripel, Foxx Rougge - Dark Strong Ale, Hayride Saison, Velour Fog - Quadrupel Ale, Midnight Fog - Quadrupel Ale, Cherry Velour Fog - Tart Cherry version of Velour Fog, and Sorach L'Orange - Farmhouse Ale with blood oranges.

Odd13 Brewing (Lafayette) - The brewery will host a Big Game party this Sunday and will be providing FREE pizza and will also host a potluck (bring a dish to share and you'll get 1 FREE pint). The TV game sound will be wired through their larger speakers. Plus, they will be hosting a SB Squares game. Claim your square(s) before they're all gone. Winning squares take home Odd13 Beer / Gear.

Very Nice Brewing Co (Nederland) - Stop in and try this month's featured beer "The Logical Fallacy", a delicious mistake in reasoning. This beer challenges the Logical Fallacy that says if a beer is a stout, it can't be hoppy. It has four generous hop additions including Summit and Northern Brewery and is rated around 70 IBU. The beer also has a deep smokiness and coffee tones with the sweetness of Colorado honey. Try that or one of several other flagship and premium beers on tap. Also try the new "The Petrichor ESB", brewed with New Hampshire white pine needles.

Wild Woods Brewery (Boulder) - Heads up! The brewery will be closed next week on Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 4th & 5th) for brewery renovations. They'll be back open on the 6th with the release of CABIN FEVER, an imperial red ale with a hint of cinnamon and rum soaked oak. Until then, stop by after work today and beat the storm with a pint and fill your growlers to go!

West Flanders Brewing Co (Boulder) - Their new "Session One" is off and running, the first in a new seasonal session series. This one is a Belgian-style ginger blonde ale. It's only 4.4% ABV and 19 IBU, and crisp, clean, & fresh.

Black Bottle Brewery is expanding for 3rd time

Black Bottler Brewery ExpansionOne year old breweries are lucky to expand in their first year of operation. Black Bottle Brewing in Fort Collins is planning to expand for the 3rd time in just over a year and they've got some big plans for bottling and distributing too. Check out their latest press release to find out what's in the works for this fast growing Colorado craft brewery.

Black Bottle Brewery to double its production capacity in coming weeks

[PRESS RELEASE] Fort Collins, CO – Jan. 27th, 2014 – At just 14 months old, Black Bottle Brewery (“BBB”) will be going through their third production expansion on Tuesday, January 28th at their 1611 S. College Avenue, Suite 1609 location, when they receive seven new fermentors and five new brite tanks, more than doubling their existing brew house operation.

“We are excited that the day has finally come” said General Manager, Steve Marrick. “We’ve been working on the logistics and the arrival date for a little while now, and we can’t wait to put all the pieces together and start making more beer!”

Twelve large tanks will have made their way almost 1,200 miles from Practical Fusion in Oregon City, Oregon, to find their new home in Black Bottle Brewery’s basement brew house. As if things were not a tight fit already, they fix to get a little more cramped when two 20bbl and five 9bbl fermentors are added. Also in the shipment will be two 18bbl and three 8bbl brite tanks that will be placed in the BBB production cooler, which will be getting a facelift of its own with an additional 300 square feet during the expansion.

The first quarter of 2014 will continue to be a busy one for BBB, with plans to start bottling their Liquid Metal (Imperial Rye Stout) and Just a Minor Threat (Imperial IPA) in 750ml bottles using a four head bottling line. Needing to make room for the new equipment, Black Bottle Brewery found an offsite storage location on the north side of Fort Collins.

The near future looks promising for this local craft brewery as they have been in negotiation with a major distributor in the Denver area and are considering distributing further south to the Colorado Springs area as well as to our neighbors up north in Wyoming. Black Bottle signed last summer with High Country Beverage and is currently being distributed throughout Northern Colorado and the Western Slope.

Black Bottle Brewery opened its doors just a little over a year ago in December of 2012. Brewing creative craft ales and lagers with radical ingredients in their basement is their passion and recently partnered with High Country Beverage of Loveland to help with their distribution. Offering a full food menu from its kitchen on the main level, Black Bottle Brewery provides a unique drinking environment enhanced by great food.
