Sanitas 360 TripelSanitas Brewing Co (Boulder) - [PRESS RELEASE] Sanitas Brewing Company is expanding its available canned offerings with a limited edition Tripel. Motivated by the rich history of Trappist brewing in Belgium, Sanitas’ brewers designed 360º Tripel to highlight complex spice and fruit notes imparted by an authentic abbey-harvested yeast strain. The hazy, straw colored ale displays white pepper and orange in the aroma with layers of clove, floral hops, anise, and ripe pear in the flavor. A dry and crisp finish provides remarkable drinkability given the 8.4% ABV. 360º Tripel also marks a collaboration between Sanitas and craft brewery can supplier Crown Beverage. As inventor of the bottle cap, Crown has supported the craft beer industry for over a century. Crown’s world-class manufacturing practices and role as a beer-packaging pioneer are reflected in the technology of Sanitas’ newest can. Matte printing and a fully removable can top are two such innovations consumers can experience with 360º Tripel. 6 packs of 360º Tripel, named after the 360º End which it features, will hit shelves of select Boulder County liquor stores this week. Supplies are highly limited, each store receiving only a small number of cases. The beer was also brewed to coincide with this year’s Craft Brewer’s Conference held in Denver, where attendees will be able to try it. Furthermore, it will be on tap at Sanitas Brewing Company’s Tap Room and a small number of bars and restaurants starting Tuesday, April 1. [3550 Frontier Ave, Unit A, Boulder, CO]

Loose Leaf debuted last year, as part of the brewery’s Montage Variety Pack. The beer was so well received, the brewery decided to release it in its own package this year. “When we introduced Loose Leaf last year, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive," said National Sales Manager, Kirk Simpson. "Many customers expressed how much they wished they could get more than just the three bottles in the Montage Variety Pack, so we listened!” Recently named one of the best new beers of 2013 by Modern Brewery Age, Loose Leaf is lighter in color, lower in alcohol content, yet flavorful and distinct. The final recipe is crisp and balanced with lower IBU's and a bright hop aroma. The name “Loose Leaf” is a nod to the loose, whole flower hops used in the hop back that give the beer its unique hop character. At 4.5% ABV, it’s delicate and refreshingly drinkable with a clean finish. “Light and crisp, but with such good hop character,” said Pete Reid, Modern Brewery Age. “Gently hopped, but the hops are perfectly calibrated”. Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of Loose Leaf with a variety of events in all of its markets, and in the Tap Room on April 7th(Session Beer Day). Loose Leaf will be available in six packs year round throughout the brewery’s eleven state distribution footprint.

Mountains and West

Steamworks Brewing Co (Durango) - [PRESS RELEASE] As is now tradition on the first Friday of the month, Steamworks Brewing Co. continues its Firkin Fridays event on Apr. 4, 2014, offering up an homage to Spring and a devilishly good, cask-conditioned brew. The Devil’s Bouquet firkin will be tapped at 3 p.m. “The base is our Ale Diablo, which is a strong, golden ale,” said Steamworks Brew Master and Certified Cicerone® Ken Martin. “We added rose hips and elderflowers as a nod to the spring season here in Durango, and maybe to pay a bit of reverence to the weather gods to send us some much needed precipitation.” Also added to the cask was concentrated wine grape juice as a sugar source to achieve refermentation, according to Martin. With cask conditioning, the yeast transforms the sugar into alcohol, and the natural carbonation results from the trapped carbon dioxide occurring as a byproduct. The beer’s flavors and characters develop within the cask. [801 E. 2nd Ave, Durango, CO]

Kannah Creek Brewing (Grand Junction) - Stop in for a Monday firkin tapping of their La Señorita Amber. It taps at 5pm and will be available for 1 night only. [1690 N 12th St, Grand Junction, CO]

Ska Mexican LagerSka Brewing Co (Durango) - [PRESS RELEASE] Ska Brewing is announcing the 2014 release of Mexican Logger, the brewery’s seasonal Mexican-style lager. Brewed in honor of a fictional “Mexican Logger Superhero” that was part of the irreverent brewery’s original business plan/comic book, the beer hits stores on Wednesday, April 2 in cans, bottles and kegs in Colorado and Ska’s other markets. Originally brewed in 1999 and debuting in cans in 2011, Mexican Logger is a highly sessionable craft-style lager of 5% ABV. It’s made with premium malts and hops and fermented with a German lager yeast. The beer features a light-to-medium body and flavors of fresh grain and sweet malt, all balanced by a pleasant bite of Saaz hops and clean, crisp finish. Perfect for summer quaffing, the beer has become a warm-weather hit with Ska fans. It has also played a big role in Ska’s 12% growth in 2013. “Mexican Logger’s sales were up 32% last year,” says Ska founder Dave Thibodeau. “It accounts for nearly 12% of our overall annual sales, which is pretty unique for a seasonal beer.” To help meet demand for the beer this year, Thibodeau says Ska has boosted its 2014 Mexican Logger production by 25%. To celebrate the release of the beer, Ska is holding a release party at Ska Brewing World Headquarters in Durango, Colorado on Wednesday, April 2 from 5-7 PM. The event will include giveaways, Mexican cuisine from The Container Restaurant, and live music from local heroes The Lawn Chair Kings. The beer will available in Ska’s nine states (CO, AZ, NM, TX, MO, KS, NE, IL, NC) through September.

Top 50 Craft Breweries of 2013 by Sales Volume

Brewers AssociationCraft Beer sales numbers are up for 2013! The Brewers Association in Boulder, CO just released their annual list of the Top 50 Craft Breweries in the US based on beer sales volume. This year Colorado has 6 companies in the list including: New Belgium Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewery, Odell Brewing, Left Hand Brewing, Rock Bottom (aka Craftworks Breweries), and Breckenridge Brewery. Congrats to our local breweries making the top 50 list! Here's the official list.

[PRESS RELEASE] Boulder, CO • March 31, 2014 - The Brewers Association—the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers—today released its annual lists of the top 50 craft and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume and the craft brewer definition in 2013¹. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 38 were small and independent craft brewing companies.
“In 2013, craft breweries reached new all-time highs in production volume and dollar sales,” said Bart Watson, staff economist, Brewers Association. “Beer lovers continue to demand high-quality, fuller-flavored and local beers from small and independent craft breweries.”

2013 Top 50 Craft Breweries by Sales Volume - part 2

¹The definition of a craft brewer as stated by the Brewers Association in 2013: An American craft brewer is small, independent, and traditional. Small: Annual production of beer less than 6 million barrels. Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Flavored malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition. Independent: Less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer. Traditional: A brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewer's brands) or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavor.

Note: The Brewers Association updated the craft brewer definition in 2014. The new definition can be found on the Brewers Association website and will be used to collect 2014 data, published in 2015.

New Belgium Summer HellesNew Belgium (Ft. Collins) - [PRESS RELEASE] New Belgium Brewing has released Summer Helles, the brewery’s summer seasonal. It was originally created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of both Telluride’s famed Bluegrass Festival and Rockygrass Festival. Due to its popularity at those events, New Belgium decided to give more people a chance to enjoy Summer Helles and made it the latest seasonal. The beer style, Helles, was born in the 1890’s in a Munich brewery and means “light” or “bright” in German. Summer Helles, a traditional German-style lager, is definitely light but has a substantial body with delicate malty flavors, perfect for summer. The aroma is full of fresh grains, spicy hops and sweet corn and honey reminiscent of Honey Comb cereal. New Belgium added some lager yeast to the brewing process to create a crisp finish with slightly fruity, apple-like esters that don’t mask the spicy, herbal hops and toasty malts. Summer Helles pours a bright gold color with a slight sheen and nice white foam.

Goose Island The Illinois Imperial IPA review

Goose Island The Illinois Imperial IPAForget for the moment that Goose Island Beer Company is now owned by a huge national beer company. Goose Island has been around since 1988 and has been making award winning beer for a long time. The subject of this beer review is made by the original Chicago area brewery that is well known for it's big beers. This beer review is focused on their big Double IPA called "Goose Island The Illinois Imperial India Pale Ale", or The Illinois IIPA for short.

The Illinois is no watery beer, far from it. It weighed in at a hefty 9% ABV and a respectable 95 IBUs. This particular beer came in a 12oz bottle and was brewed and bottled in Chicago, Illinois. There's even a bottling date of February 14, 2014 so I know that this beer was just over 1 month. That's still within my freshness limit for big hoppy beers. The bottle label claims this beer will stay good for 180 days, but I would suggest trying to drink one of these within 6 to 8 weeks for best freshness.

One of my previous reviews of Goose Island's regular IPA had mixed reviews, only because I drank one that was a year old. However, this sample bottle is much fresher and has a lot more ABV's than the original. So how would this brew measure up to the other double IPA's (DIPA) out there? Fermentedly Challenged is up for a full review.

Appearance: The Illinois pours out with a dark golden, nearly amber color with a big 2-3 finger tall light tan head. The foam left a noticeable sticky lacing and when swirls kept up the nice lacing effect. The beer itself looked well filtered. No sediment could be seen and the beer had excellent clarity. The beer had a modest amount of carbonation.

Aroma: Wow, just what I would expect from a big double IPA. The Illinois smacked my nostrils with a big resiny, sticky, piney aroma with the side note of semi-sweet malt. There were Chinook, Cascade, Citra and Meridian hops in there and man did that produce a wonderful smell. There was a noticeable earthiness to the scent and it gave me the feeling that this beer was going to be big, bitter and hefty. The hop nose can't be ignored in this beer. I could pick up a hint of alcohol heat in the aroma as well. It told me to get ready and sip slowly.

Goose Island Illinois close-upTaste: I started drinking this beer about 15 minutes after I opened it and it was still in the 40-50 degree temperature range. The very first sip felt medium bodied, with a bit of carbonated bubbles and ending smooth. I tasted a big malt base first, followed immediately by a big hit of resiny hops. The hop taste lingered for a while after the sip went down. This IPA reminded me of citrus (grapefruit) and pine, semi-sweet caramel malt. This DIPA drank fairly easy for a big IPA. Many imperial IPAs don't go down as easily as this one did. This reminded me of a Dogfish Head 90-minute IPA - which happened to be the 1st IPA I actually enjoyed.

Overall: I was a big fan of this beer right from the start. From the dark golden color and head, the huge fresh hop aroma, to the solid hoppy yet balance overall flavor. This beer was well made. Not many DIPA's get high marks from me, but The Illinois definitely scored well with me. If offered to me again I would gladly drink it with no hesitation. I don't care who gets credit for owning this company, Goose Island makes some fantastic beers. I fell in love before with Goose Islands Bourbon County brand of beers, now I have to add their Imperial India Pale Ale to the list of top picks from that brewery. if you love well made hoppy IPAs, then I encourage you to try this one. It's well made. There's a limited national distribution for this right now and once this batch is gone then it's gone. So drink up! Be sure to pair this beer with some spicy food or some sharp cheese. Double IPA's beg to be paired with food. For me, I'd pair it with cheddar cheese, Mexican or Asian food.

Disclosure: I was offered two 12oz bottles as complimentary samples from Goose Island Beer Company. The bottles were mailed out from Missouri, most likely from a corporate office. I promised to give this beer an honest review in exchange for the free samples. I was not paid for this review.
