Considered a “sessionable” beer because of its lower ABV (alcohol by volume) of 3 to 4 percent, the style features a low hop profile. [801 E Second Ave, Durango, CO]

Blue Spruce Brewing Co opens in Centennial, CO

Blue Spruce Brewing CompanyThere seems to be a new brewery opening in Colorado every week these days and this weekend, Blue Spruce Brewing Company opened it's doors for the very first time on April 26, 2014. Blue Spruce has been in the works for a couple years now and they located their 7-barrel brewhouse and restaurant at: 4151 E. County Line Road, Unit G in Centennial, Colorado.

Unlike smaller breweries who open with just a few beers, Blue Spruce Brewing opened with 8 of their own beers on tap as well as 12 other guest craft beers and 1 hard cider. Their beer line-up included: a Honey Kolsch, a Red Ale, a Pale Ale, a Brown Ale, a Golden Strong Ale, a Double IPA, an Apricot Blonde Ale and a Doppelbock. The Apricot Blonde and Doppelbock were considered seasonals and the rest were expected to be part of their regular line-up. Guest beers included selections from Lone Tree Brewing, Pikes Peak Brewing, Epic Brewing, Bristol Brewing, Great Divide Brewing and Colorado Cider Company.

The facility has room for a lot of people. Good thing too as the place was packed. They've got a special dining room and bar and out back they have a covered, enclosed patio. In the front they have two large glass garage doors that they plan to eventually open up to a future outdoor front patio.

Blue Spruce Brewing taster flightBlue Spruce is a full brewpub with a full food menu. For the first couple of weeks, they are offering up traditional pub food, but once their kitchen is fully ready, they plan to specialize in Mazatlan-style Mexican food. They will be open 7 days a week starting around 11am each day.

The following is a photo tour of the new facility. There's plenty of tables, lots of flat screen TV's showing all kinds of sports and lots of room to stretch out. Their brewhouse is openly visible to the main seating area and contains a 7-barrel brewhouse and several fermenters. One of the owners Todd McClure told me they already have room for 3 more fermenters in the brewhouse and they expect to get those in later this year. Glad to see they plan on keeping a lot of their own beer in stock.

What ever styles they don't brew themselves, they plan to feature guest beers to fill in the gaps. The beers were solid. Of the 8 Blue Spruce beers, this blogger's favorites were the Golden Strong Ale (11% ABV) and the Honey Kolsch (6% ABV). Also check out the Double IPA featuring some rarely seen hops (Zythos, Calypso and Belma hops).

Parry's Pizza loves Big Ass Tap Takeovers

Parry's Pizza Big Ass Tap Takeover 2014When Parry's Pizza in Highlands Ranch, Colorado does a tap takeover, they do it right. On Saturday, April 26, 2014, Parry's Pizza put on their 2nd annual Big Ass Tap Takeover with Avery Brewing Company of Boulder, CO. Avery brought over 20 of their beers on tap as well as several special and rare brews in bottles. If you went to last year's event, you know that Avery brings over some of their best beers.

The tap takeover was focused just on their Highlands Ranch location this year in order to simplify things a bit. The event ran from just before 11am (particularly early for their Ale Yeah members) and went all the way to close. There was a special printed menu listing all of their Avery beers on tap that day.

Members of Avery Brewing's staff were on hand and showed up in style in the big Avery One van that they parked outside. John Turk and the Colorado Craft Beer Show did a live radio remote there from 12 noon to 2pm. Owner David Parry was the co-host and they spoke to a few of the Avery staff as well as some local beer bloggers from Mark Robinson (BrewallyInsane.com) and Dave Butler (Fermentedly Challenged.com).

Big Ass Take Takeover MenuThe party was packed. So much so that the local sheriff's patrol car swung by on several occasions just to ensure the crowd was behaving themselves (luckily they were). The beers were the real star of the show. Avery brought such beers as: Avery IPA, Beast Grand Cru 2010, Bhakti Chai Brown, Bolder Weisse, Coconut Brown Ale, Collaboration Not Litigation Ale, Double Dry-Hopped Maharaja, Ellie’s Brown Ale, Hog Heaven, The Kaiser 2012, Lilikoi Kepolo, Mephistopheles’ Stout, New World Porter, Out of Bounds Stout, Out of Mind, Salvation, Samael’s, The Czar, The Maharaja, The Reverend, Trogdor the Burninator, Tweak, Uberschwein, White Rascal, and Winter’s Day IPA.

Special beers in bottles included: Uncle Jacob's Stout, Opuntia, Rumpkin, Mephostopheles' Stout 2012 and a surprise appearance by their soon to be released sour: Rufus Corvus. Wow, what a line-up.

Here are the photo highlights from the day. Be sure to check it out again next year. It should be even bigger and better than ever. Thanks to Parry's Pizza for a great time, great pizza and getting all these awesome beers.

Colorado Beer NewsToday is World Penguin Day. Here's to our tuxedo'd feathered flightless birds of the Antarctic region. Not too many birds can survive cold like a Penguin can. It's a good day to watch "Happy Feet", dress up in a black tux, or visit these birds at your local zoo. Or better yet, find a bottle of Killer Penguin Barleywine (Boulder Beer) or Tactical Nuclear Penguin (BrewDog) and enjoy it outside a mild Spring day. Here's what's happening around the Colorado beerosphere today Friday, April 25th, 2014. If you aren't reading this article on FermentedlyChallenged.com, you don't know what you're missing.

Fort Collins Brewery Wallace Wee Heavy review

Fort Collins Brewery Wallace, Wee HeavyIn the second in a back-to-back review session, I present a beer review of one of The Fort Collins Brewery's latest bottle offerings. The Fort Collins Brewery (FCB) has started putting out a series of beers in what they call their "Malt Monsters" series. One of the first such beers is Fort Collins Brewery - Wallace, Wee Heavy, a big Scottish-style ale.

FCB describes this beer as an "intense, malty brew" that put their brewing system to the test. It weighs in at a big 9.8% ABV, 57 IBUs and 21 on the SRM color scale. FCB packaged this beer in a 22oz (650ml) bomber bottle and released it around the beginning of April 2014. FCB stated that this beer took a 6-hour boil to make the caramel features stand out a bit more.

The BJCP guidelines describes a Strong Scotch Ale (or wee heavy) as an ale "fermented at cooler temperatures than most ales, and with lower hopping rates, resulting in clean, intense malt flavors." I expect this beer to be very malt forward, yet bittered just enough to balance and with a good warming effect. I happen to be a fan of Scottish-style ales, especially big ones, so I was eager to give this one a try.

Appearance: FCB's Wallace Wee Heavy poured out a medium dark brown color with reddish-orange highlights along the side of the glass. While it was darker than most beers, it was light enough that I could still see through it. There was an abundance of a tan head that seemed to linger for a while. The beer had good clarity, no signs of fogging or particulates. The head left a slight lacing, but that quickly slid off the sides and didn't stick.

Aroma: There is no mistaking the fact that Wallace, Wee Heavy was a big malty brew. The first several sniffs of this beer let you know that the malts were taking the spotlight here. I could smell a bit of caramelization in the malts, some sweetness, yet with a sense of earthiness from the hops. At 57 IBU's, there was a modest amount of hop bitterness included to take note of in the aroma. There was also a touch of alcohol heat detected, but overall, this beer smelled just as I would expect a big Scottish beer to smell like. For me, that's a rather pleasant aroma.

FCB Wallace Wee Heavy close-upTaste: Malt is the star of this brew. Wallace had a big, big malty taste with a nice warming effect following it. The beer had a medium body and the malt, while slightly on the sweet side, seemed to be balanced well with an adequate amount of bitterness. I could definitely tell this wasn't a session beer. The taste and complexity of this beer forced me to slow down and sip this one slower than most.

Beers like this tend to hide some of the flavor initially when first poured, but as it warmed, Wallace really brought out the malt flavor and aroma more and more. I tend to like these kind of beers slightly warmer than fridge temperature, but if you warm it too much it may ruin the rich complexity. Luckily, it also tends to warm the drinker from the inside quite quickly. So if a bit of heat concerns you, drink this one on a cooler day. The warm months of Spring and Summer may make you sweat a bit.

Overall: Of all the beers I've had from Fort Collins Brewery lately, this one I seemed to like the best. I would definitely recommend this beer as a wonderful malty brew that has a good flavor and a decent kick. It was a nice relaxing beer. While I had no problem finishing a glass of this beer, I felt that there was still some room for improvement here. It's well balanced, but there are even better Wee Heavy beers out there in this market and FCB at least put up a new contender that I think will stay above the average at least.

FCB seems to be changing their line-up in a big way lately and if this brew is any indication, I think they are headed in the right direction. Say goodbye to the norm and look for something wit a bit extra in this beer. I would definitely have this beer again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next "Monster" is in their series.

Disclosure: During the last month, I have been sent four different samples of beers from The Fort Collins Brewery courtesy of their marketing department. I chose to review two of the four beers. I was not paid for this review.
