JJ - I did try using a Fat Tire to introduce someone to craft beers but that beer didn't go over well with them (for some reason). I think it was that distinctive belgian yeast taste from NBB that they didn't like. But ya, an amber or a nice wheat would be good.

Sorry about leaving the women out of the picture. Didn't mean to focus on just the guys. I've noticed many women picking up the Blue Moon when I'm at the store so perhaps that one would work as well.

And yes, Pyramid Apricot does sell here in CO - haven't tried that one yet.

I just tried to post but think my comment didn't go through the first time, so here it is again. I have two thoughts for you:

(1) I think wheat beers and amber beers make good starter beers. Both are generally low in hops, and the light body of the wheat beers works well for some, while the toasty malt flavors in the amber work with others. I think a really banana-clove-bubblegummy Bavarian-style hefeweizen (Weihenstephaner, maybe?), or a fruited American hefe (do you get Pyramid Apricot in CO?), or a Belgian wit (I know BlueMoon works well, but in the spirit of sticking to actual craft brews, maybe the New Belgium Mothership would work too?) would work.

As for amber beers, you're right next to NBB and Fat Tire is one of the best for converting new beer drinkers!

(2) Don't forget the girls! You specfically asked about converting young men over to good beer, but what about all the young women out there who might not be drinking beer at all? I think all of the above would work for women too.

I actually did the reverse, I taught my father about craft beers. The man was drinking miller for 50 years, poor guy!
